Novation Supernova
The SuperNova was released in 1998 & was at the time Novation's multi-timbrel, polyphonic, flagship analog-modelling synth, available in both an initial rack & follow-up keyboard form.
The SuperNova was created by a team led by legendary synth designer Chris Huggett who's previous designs included early iconic synth designs such as the Wasp & the OSC OSCar, as well as the operating systems for the S1000 & S3200 sampler. While working at Akai Huggett advised Novation on the BassStation design which was based on his early Wasp synth & eventually he left Akai & joined Novation full time, designing the Supernova & the Nova synth series, the more recent Peak & Summit synths as well as the ReMOTE & ReMOTE SL series of controllers.
The Supernova was unsurpassed for features on its release, sporting 8 multiple outputs, each with its own dedicated FX chain making the Supernova a real powerhouse studio or live synth able to create entire compositions by itself, including drum sounds, all on dedicated outputs with unique FX for every sound if required!
The extensive onboard factory sounds were designed by Phil McDonald who had previously worked for companies including Korg & himself released Trance music under his artist name Tau Factor.
Although Analog modelling technology has moved on from the original DSP technology that modelling synths used at the end of the 1990's, a Supernova is still a fantastic sounding and VERY versatile & easy to use centrepiece & workhorse unit for any MIDI studio or production suite, and will happily deliver sounds for a wide variety of genres. What makes the Supernova such a well designed synth is the speed you can work with it to quickly get ideas going without breaking that creative flow. You can pick up a Supernova for £500 second hand.
The 1998 Supernova saw Novation muscle very much centre-stage into the synth market with a flagship unit that left the compeition at the time gasping for breath having as it did double the polyphony of the previous years big flagship JP-8000 from Roland, but to cap this all off it was 8 part multi-timbrel with each of the 8 parts assignable to their own stereo output pair with their own dedicated fx processor! In effect therefore it was 8 synths in one unit each with it's own fx processor.
The Supernova is capable of a wide variety of synthesis formats and therefore can deliver not just all your typical classic vintage and modern analog synth fare, but also suprisingly, it yields rich electric tine pianos and the like.
Another big scoring point with the Supernova is its ease of editing & the way the OS remembers things so when you step out of an edit everything is where you left it making sound and multi-set creation incredibly fast & intuitive. When editing a multi-set for example if you assign a program to a multi set slot & channel and tweak it, then when you save that multiset it saves the patch edit too. All very intuitive and fast

Bloody well alright!
This really has raised the bar. Somthing like this could have been available if everyone didn't go DX-7 crazy back in the mid 80s. This going to extremes thing that unfortunately happens is why it takes this long for something that could have been made long ago.
Now if they could only go further back and work on new innovations in electric keyboards, yes, electric, not just electronic, Rhodes, Clavinet, etc. Since no sampler can truly capture the real thing.
Anyway, here's hoping this can make it to the United States within a reasonable time.
Roland and Nord are pissing in their pants at the thought of this invention.
I too shudder. Even the care and detail to make the A/D converters 24 bit. About time. Next they have to start putting digital outs on them, and make mixers with multiple digital imputs, then if you go direct to DAT or PC/Mac you would loose nothing in the process. Imagine that.
And if all 24 bit? Or dare we say 32? With 96 khz sampling rates for realism beyond comprehension and DVD compatibility, now you have got something. Noise will be a thing of the past. Call me a clean freak. It's not so bad.
Haven't even heard the unit yet and giving it a 5 based upon what it must do well, imagine that?

Looks great but for the price of British made gear down under I could get two JP8000s and have money left over.
Okay not as many outputs or FX or multi but the same poly and it does have keys!
But it does look so Wicked nonetheless....if price wasn't a problem

Keyboard version? Eeeeehhhhh... only got so much
room in the studio, man... and just about every
musician I know who plays synth is mega-anal
about keyboard feel! I mean, I can't stand most
Yamaha keyboards because the keys are so light,
they feel like I'm playing a toy... so I hook 'em
in and MIDI 'em up to some old piece of shite I
got for $30 used, sounds like crap but has a good
keyboard feel to it and I ain't got the bastard
running through the mix anyway... this is the old
master keyboard sitch, you don't buy everything
for sound, you buy a couple things just for feel!
Check out the cheap crap down at your local store,
find yourself a commercial piece of crud that has
good feel but piss-poor sound, and see what you
can get it for... garage sales and pawn shops are
great... but still, you can only have so many KBs
in the room, man! So get them MIDI cables warmed
up, and look for a good thru box ;)

i've been very excited after listening to a demo
in the german magazine KEYS (5/98). it sounded to
me like an all-in-one device (except sequencer)
for trance music.
also, i've been very impressed by the "vintage"
sounding drums in that demo, for example, there
was a kick with long (good) reverb in the
beginning.
in a shop they told me later, there were no drums
in the machine (because of no sampling-rom).
so what?
is novation cheating here, or is it done by
"analog modelling" of the (i think) originally
sampled tr909 sounds?
that would be great !!!

Seems like a crazy synth... But I'm not so
sure all of us JP-8000 owners should start crying...
I love my JP, and by the looks of it, this gadget
is gonna cost at a great deal more.
And there is such a thing as overkill! The JP
does everything I want/need it to do, and then some.
For what its worth, I "TRUST" Roland much more than
novation (They've been making synths for close to
30 years now).
I used to have a bassstation keyboard, thing
was a noisy, flimsy plastic thing that resembled
a child's toy.... Seems good, but I wouldn't pay
thant kind of money for an analog synth...

This synth sounds like da' shit, but I think I'd rather get myself a Nord Modular. The editing options on the Modular are unprecidented and unrivaled. You can make up a complex patch from scratch in like a couple minutes. The only big plus for the SuperNova is 8part multitimbral capabilities as apposed to Nords 4part.

Is there actually DSP-power enough to use 48 fx simultanesly AND 16 voices poly AND arpareggiator?
I'm at work, so I haven't listened to the .ra yet, but what about .mp3? Love to hear it better quality. Well, the specs give it 5/5

yes..... that is NOT to be overlooked, and rmemebr this bugger goes up to 32 note friggin poly !!.... with 8 part multi !!.... cos the ablity to have 8 poly outs.....each with 8 seperate dedicated fx units, and 8 dedicated multi-clockable arpegiators is worth half the price alone..... at gigs.... 8 seperate delays if needed.... and distortion, rverb, etc etc.... pretty f'ing good... one of these and a sampler.... you're home and dry for trance... and alot of other stuff....

Um it looks good and a rather too short session with one in a shop was great. The control and expressiveness of these instruments is wonderful, they beat sample play back any day of the week. The ability to have 8 parts each with its own effects is brilliant. I wonder why no one else has done that, as effects need only a tenth of the processing power of Analog / Physical Modelling. The power of these Analog / Physical Modelling synthesisers seems to be increasing at a phenomenal rate (largely due to the increasing power of the DSP chips, a spin off from the internet revolution).
Now what's wrong with it, well not much but the 8-channel output on ADAT would be nice, then we could have 24-bit digital from when you touch the key to the master with only one cable. Still until someone comes up with a digital mixer with a lot more digital inputs it wouldn't really be much use, it looks like were stuck with analogue connections.
It's now top of my shopping list, particularly as with its extensive midi implementation I can use the real-time controls on my Korg Prophesy to control it.
ith only one cable

I'd love to hear from anyone who's spent time with this beast !
How do its sounds compare to that of the JP8K ?
Is it a good allround soundsource ?
The demo shows it can obviously produce killer trance tracks but does it
have atmospheric pads and special FX sounds suitable for Drum 'n' Bass ? ?

I've had the supernova for a couple of days now
and I like it..a lot. The sounds it produces are
very analogue, typically Kraftwerk, JMJ, Vince Clarke
sounding. Warm pads, Solid Basses, Liquid sequences,
good oscillator sync and FX sounds, and yes authentic
303, fantastic when you turn up the distortion. For some good
examples check out www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~mickey/NOVA/
who has recorded some MP3 tracks.

Great site, Kilo, how do you manage keeping up with
this next to working, playing, relations, etc and
so forth? You HAVE to wonder. Kilo, and anyone
who cares, I need advice. This Supernova-beast is
a floorsweeper - in theory. It sounds, I've heard
several demo's now, very good, spectacular even.
Tempting. Infact I am considering buying it. Only,
I'm not getting any help anywhere. You, beside the
fact that the spec's speak for themselves, have
covered the pro's allright. Good. I want the con's.
Not necessarily the why not's or subjective me
thinks; no, baby, the drawbacks, the flipside of
the medallion. Compared to the competition and/or
what "should have been done". Not easy providing
this, considering your appearent close co-operation
with Novation. E-mail me in private then. Please.
Why? £1.400:-
Marks FOUR. Until I see it walk on water.
Thank you in advance. Much obliged. (980819-23.45CET)

well I agree with whoever up there said that you can get a lot of shit for the price of this...yes Kilo you can maybe only get a 303 and a 106, but WHO WANTS A 303? If you're gonna spend that kind of money, then go for the supernova. But for that price, I could get a decent sampler for drums (s20), hardware sequencer (or s/w; i just like hardware better), juno106, basstaion, a few FM modules, and a decent mixer....provided you buy everything s/h...not to say that the supernova doesn't kick ass, i'd LOVE to have one, but I think that those on a limited budget (ME!) can get more bang for the buck. Maybe you get more multitimbrality out of the supernova, but remember it's still like having 8 of the SAME SYNTH...and we all know every synth has its own character, so even though there are lots of modulation possiblities you still will get a sameness quality to a mix...or all of your mixes...on top of which, as bill@plig mentioned in a chat thread, the most fun part of making music is fucking with the mixer stage....adding effects, working out levels, muting and unmuting...not in lots of knobs and cursors...
but maybe this is just me; i like it hands-on but i also get fewer sound capabilities theoretically. however you like it..just look around before buying at all you get get for the price..

Some concerns though. The Supernova should have included
inputs to allow the processing of external signals (just like
the Virus). After comparing the Virus, Nord, and the
BassStation, I kinda feel that the BassStation's analog sound
seem kinda 'gentle'. I'm not sure if it's the way ASM works. Coz
every maker has their formula for analog sound processing, and
I just have this funny feeling the Supernova would not be able to
sound as harsh as the Nord or Virus. And I feel that harsh and rawness
is cool. For that price, I'd honestly go get a Virus with 16 parts
and external signal processing. And I almost forgot, that out there,
there's also the EMU Audity 2000 to consider. Oh well, it's just my 2 cents
worth. I'm considering a Supernova only because it would add some color to
my studio, and it would look very good racked up with the Nord, Virus, and
Microwave all in a row. Cheers to all.

Sorry, I just find it funny how everyone is cussing over this thing , but it really isnt ALL that. Personally,I could do more with a VL-Tone and a Magical Musical Thing.

I've just finished reviewing the thing for a mag here in Australia. Quite frankly i think the sounds are pretty weedy, a Nord or Virus would blow this thing away... I used it for bass on a remix a week or so ago and ended up using my old Bassstation and Oscar instead. And besides, who wants eight parts of physically modelled analogue synth coming out of the same machine. It'd sound like makin' tunes with a full rack of Roland gear. No input to the filter. You'd get more use out of 2 SuperBassStations and a couple of SH101s on the CV outs of the BassStations... cost you less as well... It should be 500 quid

Hmmmm ... Virus or Supernova? Either way, in Australia we'll get shagged loose on the price. It's not the x-rate, it's the fookin importers and retailers taking us in every orifice ... oops ... that was a bit crude ... anyway, can anyone suggest a good Euro supplier? I seem to remember a German outfit with a really comprehensive range of instruments (not Thomann) ... plain-jane website, but honest pricing. Any suggestions?

Rebirth is total shit i have owned it for about 6 months and it is safe to say that it is totally overHyped I dont think it sounds anything like a 303,well to be honest it does kinda but it definetly is not as close to the real thing as everyone says it is .
just thought i should let all of the people who are starting out know dat dont believe the bullshit go and try everything out first and be wary of what the sales asshole says (they only tell u wat you want to hear) heres a list of what I think is good if u r doing dance or whatever supernova, nord lead,Jp8080,505,Rm1X,CS1x,CS2x,polymorph,raveolution and some more...
fuck akai's and if u ask me forget sampling if u r on a tight budget thanx kilo hippy for a fucken nice site how about CS6X,JP8080 reviews and some more RA please pretty please

Hey- the new KS-4 and KS5s are out. How do they compare to the Supernova? I can just afford the KS-4, so I hope it gives me sound similar to the Supernova!

After a decade of comments sadly these gems are no longer made -
Novation only now make one 'true' synth now - the Ultra Nova - but
their MIDI/USB control keyboards are making the right noises too! I
have the SuperNova Mrk I in my studio - it truly is a brilliant
machine (please update the O/S to 4.1 !!!) I too have a Novation KS4
(also v.nice) On auction sites these days you'll pick up a SuperNova I
for as little as £250(ish) for the SuperNova II bung on another £100
or there abouts... for as little as that (& if your in the market for
real hardware & not softsynth junk) you can't go wrong, esp. as some
people are parting £130+ for the Yamaha CS1X/CS2X's synths (& in my opinion they're crap) .... and here is wisdom! remember the old lament
'... if I could go back in time...etc...' be it Star Wars figures,
football cards, analogue synths '...I wish I'd kept hold of...' or
'... wish I'd bought back then & kept...' Novation dear chaps, in the
future I predict the humble SuperNova will exchange hands for
fortunes, and so it should.
