I am a tad confused. What is the difference between D Dorian and D minor?

Ta alot. But I know that D Dorian is a mode of C (or something along those lines)but the Dorian mode and the D minor use the same notes so what's the difference? Do teachers use the "modes of C" just to teach us about music theory?

Close but no cigar man.. D Dorian and D minor are different.

D dorian is:

D E F G A B C D

D minor (natural minor) is:

D E F G A Bb C D

Do you understand what a mode is? Simply put, a mode is just its' relative major scale started on a different note. D dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian and B Locrian are all modes of C major. So, D dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian (natural Minor) and B Locrian are all made up of the same notes (the notes of the C scale), just started on different degrees. E Phrygian is a C major scale "started on" E:

E F G A B C D E

D minor isn't relative to C. To find out relative minor scales look at the 6th degree of a major scale (A, in the case of C). To find relative major scales, look at the 3rd degree of the minor scale (F, in the case of D min).

Hope this was educational (and correct)

Thanks for that Craig. Makes a bit more sense now. I don't know if any of you muckers has this but I have to write all my tracks in the key of A minor cos my bass synths only sound good from G1 up to around C2. Any higher or lower and it either sounds to subby/flabby or to high and thin.

Nope, perhaps you should reprogram a bit? Less suboscillator for the flabbiness, more for the thin sounds?

What synth is it?

Remake your bass patches, or get a better synth.

You just have to spend a little more time programming. I've got a Virus and have no problem getting nice basses throughout the range.

Yea but I thought the only way to determine/control the harmonics of a bass sound was to use the osc. When I raise or lower the pitch of these, isn't that the same as just moving the note in the sequencer up or down the range?

No, no.. The blending of the oscs creates harmonics too. If you're using a suboscillator in your patch and it sounds too flabby, try lowering the volume of the sub-osc, or try changing its shape to triangle.
