probably seems lame to all you professionals out here, but me and my band are young and not really well off, so we decided to get a copy of cubase sx version 1.01, to save money on the expensive recording studio prices, so we could do some simple recording by connecting our guitars, basses, drums and so on through the amplifiers then from the amps outputs directly into the soundcard of my p.c, but we came across a problem, you will probably be familiar with it, 'latency', and apparently i've been told that it is something to do with the soundcard i am using, as far as i know as i'm not very experienced it is a sb live wave device something or other, i was hoping someone would be able to give me some advice on what soundcard i should buy that is reasonably priced for a teenager to buy, and hoping that it will have as little latency as possible also to be compatible with windows xp pro, cheers! sorry for bein a lameass can't help not knowin much, dan

first, update SX to the latest. just because

second, what audio interface?

If it has a "direct monitoring" feature then use it. This should be enabled in cubase.

all this is covered in the users guide and .pdf manual, so get readin!

i dont see the problem - for recording a live band, low latency is NOT required

" i don't know how i find out the audio interface "

he was asking hwat soundcard you have

Look, if you have an actual CARD fitted for the sound, OR, is the sound coming out of some sockets on the same panel as your mouse & keyboard connector ?

if the latter, you've an onboard sound device - how old is the pc?

if it's an AC97 codec device, there is now FREE, low latency drivers for it

we need more details man - like also, are you using win XP?

go to CONTROL PANEL

go to SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES

click the AUDIO tab

see the settings for "Sound playback" DEFAULT DEVICE

and

"Sound recording" DEFAULT DEVICE

tell us what that says in those selectors (as well as what operating system you use - XP or 98 etc)

if you're not using midi much there is some cheaper audio i/o only cards with good drivers quite cheap - try our STORE to give yourself some ideas/prices

i'd really advise you to get a decent card cos it makes life so much easier

something like the HOONTECH DSP 24 VALUE is cheap.

Influx: "..first, update SX to the latest. just because.."

hahahaaha!!!!! This from the original reluctant upgrader..

On a side note and in all seriousness, an upgrade to the latest SX (i.e V2.01) will mean the guy having for fork out more dosh, however if Influx means the "latest" as in the update to 1.0.6 then that's a free download from steinberg and is a very good idea regardless of what other issues he's having..

Cheers

what you really need Dan is a mixer to track the backing down, then add any overdubs one by one afterwards. You'll see a better quality of track that way imo
