Rode NT-1

There are just a few large diaphragm condensers on the market in the lower price range area.... and this is one of the hot contenders for a top-end vocal recording....The Rode NT-1.... Here's some blurb......

A True Large Capsule Condenser microphone, like the NT2, using only

the highest quality components and state of the art transformerless FET circuitry;

the NT-1 is a high performance professional recording microphone..

The heart of the NT-1, the capsule, features a full 1" gold

sputtered diaphragm. This precision transducer is mounted in a proprietary internal

shock-mounting system. The electronic components are mounted on a revolutionary monocoque

sub assembly which assures structural integrity.

The body is machined on a C.N.C. lathe to exacting standards, after

which a hard wearing finish is applied. The microphone head is made of two layers of

high-grade stainless steel. The outer layer is of an extremely heavy

open weave to provide strength, the internal fine layer provides an effective 'pop' shield

while still being acoustically transparent. These high-grade mesh screens are formed 'as

one' into the distinctive shape by applying a single blow of over 100 tons of pressure!

The simple but effective mounting system (RM-1) is supplied as

standard, and allows for ease of mounting and positioning.

To achieve this level of performance and quality was as you can

imagine, not easy........

Well.... sounds well made... and they are !!.... a gorgeous peice of engineering at the price... they really look the nutz........ Here's the basic spec's from the manufacturers.......

  • Frequency response: 20 Hz-20kHz

  • Noise: 17dB

  • Sensitivity: 18 mV/Pa

  • Max SPL: 135 dB

  • Output impedance: 200 ohms

  • Power requirement: 48V D.C.

  • Current consumption: 3.5 mA

  • Weight: 320 gm

Features

  • Large diaphragm (1") capsule with gold-sputtered membrane

  • Ultra Low noise transformerless circuitry

  • Cardioid polar pattern

  • Full frequency response

  • Gold plated output connector

You get the following accessories with the mic.... the bracket mount in itself is a brillaint addition, and the case is excellent.....

Accessories

  • Mic stand mount (RM-1)

  • Custom high impact carry case

So..... there ya go, a great mic based on their more expensive NT-2, but with trade off's in the price coming in the form of less control, with no polarity switching, or adjustable roll-off filtering..... a brilliant microphone.....If you don't have phantom powering on a mixer, or one of the few soundcards like the APS which has it, then look at companies like Midiman for a pc mic-preamp unit, which will get you a decent level & phantom power to record to your pc....

Also, check out the AKG 3000, and the Octava mic for other cheap large diaphragm condensers.... comments please.....

OK, now when I've got it, can someone teach me how to sing? Or at least tell me what to.... :-)

The sound is much better than my old sucky Audio Technica dynamic btw..

I have run a few Pro studio's around the world and my Rode NT1 is STILL with me along with my NT3 & Sony C48, these have been great friends to me, the NT1 is by far my favorite and first choice for Vocals or acoustic guitar. If you feed it through a valve pre-amp you will be in heaven.
