What do you call a bass that has both P and Jazz type pickups? I'm looking for a wiring diagram for a National Bass with EMG Selects in it. It has 3 pots, at least one is volume of this im sure lol, but is the 2nd one for blending the pickups and the 3rd for tone? Or would it be two volumes (one for each pickup) and a tone?

hi, i recently got a cheap guitar to get the pickups out of, but one of the wires' soldering has come undone, the guitar has 2 dials, and a switch, one of the dials can be pressed in, the white wire is the one unsoldered and it leads to the buttoned dial... do you know where i should solder it

I am doing a school project of how an electric guitar works. I wanted to have a demonstration of how the pickup works and how the motion is changed to energy. I got a magnet, copper wire, a volume control and a jack but when I pluck the string no sound is made. It doesn't have to be good I just want to make sound. Can I do this with the tools I have? Do I need a certain size magnet/certain number of winds in the coil? Any help would be great. Thanks, john

Hello I have just added screw adjusters to the bridge p/u of my '66 F. telecaster and now I have ne signal to that particular p/u. The nect p/u works fine. Have I shorted the p/u out by connecting to the bridge plate with the screws?

I have a b.c.rich warlock style with 2 humbucking pickups, with 3 pots and 3 toggles. the 3 pots are both 500,000 ohm, and i have 3 on/on/on switches. I have a TKE 5 way strat switch I got from a friend all the solder points are inline and there are only 7 unlike the Squire switch that has 8 connections inline. I have tried to wire it several ways and cannot get it to work properly. If anyone knows where I can get a wiring diagram for a TKE strat switch I would apreciate it. If only I had these diagrams when I built my first guitars in 1973 (Les Paul) & 1975 (Strat). I was close!
Got here from your Red5/Akg comparison- The AKGs sound terrible specially the Toms, but the kick is poor too. I have the RDV1 as well but was initially disapointed - expecting a really precise accurate sub to it like a large condensor. We now mix it with a little amount of Tandy PZM inside the drum on blankets, with the low mid punch from the RDV1. I have got good results from the back next to the beater on some kits, but often theres too much snare rattle.

I have a Squire strat, and wanting to replace the 5-way selector switch. The one that was sold to me is a new'er Fender replacement, which has the pins split to each side. The old one are all on one side and is a standard switch for the squire. The guy at the store said this new'er one is a better switch. And he was not very clear as to rewiring it.

Hi, i have an earth cable that is not connected to anything and i get lots of buzz. The cable is soldered to the springs at the back and is routed thru into the electrics bit, but i can't see where its supposed to go? Also i only have one connection to the cable jack socket. I get a buzz which gets louder when i touch the strings. I need some help !!! its a 10 yr old 3 pickup mex strat.

I have an Ibanez am73 Artcore series semihollowbody with two humbucking pickups. All of a sudden I am not getting the sound of both pickups when the toggle switch is in the middle. I get only one pickup. Any idea as to what could be the problem? Due I just replace the toggle switch or could it be something else?

I have a 73 Standard blonde tele and I get a hum that stops when I touch the volume pot. How can I ground to eliminate the hum. I tried to ground by soldering a wire from the volume pot to under the bride but that increased the volume in the bridge pick-up and made the middle and neck pick-up sound the same with less volume. Do you have a diagram for this model.

I just purchased an old alpha les paul copy. The wires are completely disconnected from the pots. It has two humbuckers and four knobs and an input. No toggle switch. I'm assuming the knobs are for volume and tone. Can these be wired without the toggle, and how? Would the volume knobs be independant? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I have a 3 pickup Start it is a H-S-S setup. I need help making a wiring diagram for a idea I have. I want to use a push/pull pot 250/500K for the Duncan JB Jr. in the bridge, to get single and full humbucking settings.

I want to use a old sstyle Fender 3way switch to wire up only the Bridge and Neck pickups to it. I I want to wire the Middle pickup as ALWAYS ON ...by using the 2nd tone control as a seperate volume control wired HOT.

Have a Fender Squier Bronco bass, single pickup. Stopped working. Opened it up. White wire from pickup flopping around. Looked like it should go to the volu me pot, B500k ohms, 3 terminals, looks like i t broke off from the end terminal that has a jumper to the body of the pot. Soldered it back, but it no work!

Thank you so much for your diagram on Gibson Twin humbucking circuits. I own an Epiphone Sheraton II which is a copy of Gibson ES335 so I would assume that it is wired the same. I recently plugged my amp cord in to the guitar jack socket and now I have a loud humming sound and no sound from the guitar. I've been told that this is a sign that one of the wires hooked to the jack socket has disconnected. I plan to have a professional repairman fix it for me. I've also been told that all the wiring has to be removed to repair this problem. I wanted to see how this wiring works and was glad to find this diagram on your website. Thank you again

I think I may be able to use the diagram you posted for the twin humbucking cicuit above just modifying it for the set-up (see below).

However, I am hoping to get a diagram for a BC Rich Warlock guitar I am fixing for a friend of mine. It has two humbuckers but he took the original one out at the bridge and replaced it with a Duncan-Seymore but he didn't wire it right and made a few soldering errors.

It is set up with three pots and a three-way switch. I think it is a volume pot for each pickup and one master tone pot because only one one has a capasitor on it.

Anyway the Duncan-Seymore has four wires, black,white,red, green, but also has a wire sheath around them which the last two are grounds.

Any help with a diagram would be appreciated

I need a diagram for a tremonti se. it appears the same as a les paul single cut. Is it? I have 2 for the lp and they are different. Ive also replaced the pickups in the tremonti to a jazz neck and a jb on the bridge., Im strickley a novice so I took it to or local guru. got it back today and the bridge is oozing with power and the neck is real muddy and lacking power as is the two together.I have a sodering iron and thought id fix it myself;with a little help. I have a Jackson that has a metal plate that the pots and switch mount to.
Being the pots and switch are grounded together by this metal plate, do I still need to have ground wires between the pots and switch? Would this not make for a bad ground loop?

i recently installed an SD invader in my LP style Epiphone, in the bridge. All the connections for wiring were made into the 3 pos selector switch, as it was with the epiphone factory pickups, i have also installed a Bill Lawrence 500 xl in the neck. my problem is that when i play on the bridge pickup i have an amamzing amount of power but not a very clear tone , in comparison with my Ibanez, and ideas why? thanks.

i am building a tele that has 2 seymour duncan mini

i have a shadow electric guitar with a active pickup that has an equalizer on it this is only active when there is a 9v battery inserted in the back!!! the battery clip wire has snaped off have new 9v batt clip but were do the -&+ wire go??????? it has two normal pickups and the active one the bottom tone switch if pulled activates the pickup if you could help b very gratefull ???/ dan

I'm trying to get inside my freinds Sheraton but I cannot get in through the pickups as they are blocked off. I've unscrewed the pots (one at a time) and they look fine but the neck pickup still won't work. the lead connection looks fine to.

I will be installing Fenders "Samarium cobalt Noiseless" pickups in my American Standard Strat. I've read I should install a .001 capacitor to keep the sound "clean", when rolling down the volume control...??? This is at the volume conroll itself, but I'm not sure how (and where) to properly "install it? I read "to the in and output lugs of the volume pot". Does this mean ONE capacitor ACROSS those two lugs, or TWO seperate ones at the input and output respectively? I would appreciate any comments someone can offer. THANKS!!!

Am re-wiring a re-issue Danelectro Double Neck
12/6. Neck selector switch is bad. Want to try and
get more out of two Lipsticks per neck. Want to use

Fender noisless neck pu,

When i try to install a fender noisless neck pickup on my strat it sounds week and low. I tried to change the wirings on the pu so that the hot wire goes to the pu switch and gruond to vol. pot, without any help. The middle pu is a fender usa standard and the bridge is a fender noisless pu.
all positions sounds fine exept the 5th position, why is that?

Hello I'm going to change my 250k pots to 500k pots and at the same time on the tele NECK is a double stacked HUMBUCKER that i want to wire to the tone control for coil tapping/push pull? Could you show me the diagram, the bridge is a orginal single coil that i want left that way. SO to somerize a double stacked HUMBUKER to be coil tapped onthe tone control not the volume control. A buddy of mine recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul Special II. Once into the little studio though, he found the OEM humbuckers a tad weak. We cannibalized a two tonne Charvell/Jackson for the pickups. They are either Charvell or Seymour Duncan four wire plus ground.
The guitar has a three position SPDT switch which we like but the replacement pickups as stated are four wire config.
I've tried a couple generic wiring options and I get the same result each time. With the bridge pickup selected, one of the coils is rather hot, while the other is rather low output. The same is true when the neck pick up is selected. In the middle position all four coils are rather flat. Both pickups are wired the same way.
Coil one's (+) to switch, with coil one's (-) to coil two's positive and coil two's negative to ground.
I've used the Duncan and the DiMarzio recommended wiring schematics as I can't find a Charvell schematic for a SPDT switch set up. Charvell uses a five position switch. Can anyone see where I've gone wrong?

Hi, I have just purchased an Epiphone SG custom 3 pick up guitar. I would like to change the control format currently 3 volume controls and 1 common tone. I have a Gibson SG custom 3 pick up and this has 2 volume and 2 tone and this format seems to give a better tonal control and more overall control of the guitar. The overall buid and playability of the Epiphone is quite good and I can tell the difference when playing the Gibson which I have had for 18 years but I have had the Epiphone so I can retire the Gibson as it is too valuable to take into pubs where anything can and usually does kick off.

I am lookin for a wiring diagram for two humbuckers for one volume and one tone with a 3 way switch and or a 5 way switch, I recently purchased an schecter pt blackjack, it was butchered and does not work at all, different humbuckers, and 3way switch changed, I purchased two new lace alumitones as an experimental project, and need to get a good wiring diagram for the configuration mentioned above. I have a Gould SG ,having problems with wiring to the output Jack.Have three wires a Grey a white and a Black all come loose.The Jack as you know has only 2 points for wires to solder to.
Which is the positive part on the jack?
I soldered the grey and the white wires onto the jack then found the black wire loose from where i don`t know.The sound is not as loud,could i have put the wires on the wrong terminals of the jack?

I have a deluxe players strat with a pushbutton that allows 2 more pickup combinations than a standard five way switch - 7 combinations in total. I want to add a tbx pot as a master tone control for all pickups but I want to keep the five way + 2 swithching that is already working on my guitar. The only tbx wiring diagrams I've seen allow for tbx tone control for bridge and middle positions, but not the neck. Is there a way to have it work for all 3 pickups and still keep my 5 + 2 wiring? I'm inexperienced with electronics so a clear diagram would really help.

i need help--have a tele with SD FS in neck and hot rails at bridge--both 4 wire HB's. Took guitar apart for refin and carefully documented wiring.
Since it's been 2 months, and with moving things about, some more wires have come loose and I don't know how to
reassemble. Use miniswitches--2 between vol and tone. They worked as follows or all 3 master switch settings
(F,B,R): both down, full HB (series) on both HBs. both middle pos--2 single coils; both pointing at player,
both PUs in parallel. It worked great on all these settings with no feedback.
I just cannot remember how all the wires go.

I worl as a guitar tech for The Cribs and the
guitarist has just started using a Gibson 335 so I'm
looking for any handy repair tips for when the
inevitable happens.

I've got to grips with reparing whatever goes wrong
on a fender, but I am looking for advice on how to
replace the input soclet and tone/volume pots on
the 335 as there is no easy access to the wiring, or
to hold the parts in place when putting them back
in the guitar.

Are there any special tools available for fixing these
guitars, or any tricks I could use?

Hello. I have a "86" Hohner B2A bass. I need to find a wiring diagram. It works fine until I flip on the preamp. It won't work and the battery started to heat up in the battery tray. I have an Ibanez RG 550 LTD. I needed to replace all the stock pickups with the new ones. My luthier messed up the wiring i requested that i need to do it myself. I need your recomendation ( a diagram is better) on that.

My new pickups
Brigde - Di Marzio DP-100 Super Distortion
Middle - Seymour Duncan Hotrails HSR1-A
Neck - Di Marzio DP-193 Air Norton

I have Ibanez stock 5 way switch.

I have enough pull-up switch pots but my luthier only managed to fit 3 of them on the guitar.

My intention is 2 volumes (1 for bridge and middle and 1 for neck as neck has relatively lower output) and 1 master tone.

Pot pull-up switches will act like this:

1. Bridge and middle HB> single coil
2. Neck HB> single coil
3. Add bridge pickup when 5 way switch is in 4th or 5th position ( by adding the bridge hot to common output of the switch).


My problem is due to the mechanism of 5 way swith i can not make 2 volumes. If i could have 4 pots i would use 3 volumes and 1 tone that i could feed the 5-way switch from volume pots. But now as bridge and middle share pot 1, i can not do it. I can not figure out how to feed from switch to two different pots either.


Please reccomend me a solution for this. I have a gig tomorrow evening and there is 7 hours difference between my country and New York ( do not know santa Barbara). So i need your reply as soon as possible.

Hi,

Please help with schematics for HHH pickup combination in Start shaped guitar.

Ibanez RS-205 made in 1983. 5 position switch with 1 tone and 1 volume control.

Neck pickup is Dimarzio PAF Pro
Middle pickup is S.Duncan Stack
Bridge pickup is S.Duncan Fullshred

All 3 pickup are connected as humbucking serial configuration for hum-cancellation with maximum output(or so I thought according to schematics that came with the pickups).

The middle S.Duncan Stack sounds, very thin in tone and weak in volume.

I have an 83 Strat and the pickup asm does not have any metal shielding under it like some other strats, just plastic - the question is, this has three pickups and the pickups N&B only have one insulated wire coming back from the pickup - not the usual black and white hot/gnd. The middle pickup is gray and black (two wires).

The question is what king of pickups are these? The Neck is RED insulation covering hot/gnd (one wire, hot/shld-gnd) and the Bridge PU is GREEN insulation covering two wires (hot and shield-gnd). The selector SW is a 5 WAY. I understand that it does not need the foil backing on the underside of the pickguard because the wires are the shielded type - but I cant find ANY fender strat PUs with shielded wire. This guitar was one of Kurt's crash Strats (in black) and may be composed of many parts, but the asm looks original with the jack in pickguard as it should for an 83 japanese.

Hello, I having to redo this e mail because I used the word TX in it so here we go again. I have a Mexican made Strat that a friend is replacing the pickups for me they are the TX Special pickups and he said the wires on the TX pickups are a lot bigger than the wires in the guitar. He wired it up by the instructions that came with it and the neck pickup doesn't work. He changed the pickups in my Hwy 1 American made Strat with the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless and didn't have a problem and the wires were big just like the pickup wires. Will the TX Special Pickups work on a Mexican Strat or did he do something wrong? Or do you have any idea what went wrong. He said he went by the instructions on wiring it. This being a Custom Body work guitar I didn't do it myself because I didn't want mess it up. If you can help let me know. Thanks, Tommy PS Why can't I say TX in your e mail? Is this a dirty word?

I'm having a problem with bad hum or ground noise coming from my les paul only when my toggle switch is positioned to neck or bridge pickup. The noise is gone when the toggle switch is set in the center position (both pickups). Could something be wrong with the toggle switch wiring?

I am bulding a stratocaster copy. I am writing to ask if the capacitor's value has to choosen according to the pickups you are mounting or if a .02UF is going to work anyway. Is there a difference in tone if I choose a different-value capacitor? Would you suggest a 500K pot for the volume and 250K for the two tones?

i have a les paul 100 and i have just installed an EMG 81 and an 85, but sound really bad. it gives off alot of noise and it they sound liek single coil pickups. if there is anyone that can help or shed some light on my situation please, PLEASE! send me an email.

I have A mid 80's Ibanez Destroyer. It was wired from the factory with 3 humbuckers a three way switch(toggle style) a volume and 2 tones. the problem is that the middle P/U seems constant I've rewired it only to end up where I started so I sinply dissconnected the middle P/U. It now switches N to N+B to B. Would I need a different switch to make the P/Us all independant? Any suggestions?

I have an American telecaster deluxe with the three pick up configuration and an extra toggle for parallel and series switching. I replaced the neck and bridge Fender Noiseless pups with samarium cobalt noiseless pups and left the middle fender noiseless pup in place. I soldered the white leads from teh SCNs to the appropriate ear on the switch and soldered the black and green wires to the volume pot (ground). All three pickups work properly when the switch pup is selected individually. However, when I select once of the combinations, i.e., middle/neck or bridge/middle, I get a thin sound with 1/2 the volume. Can someone help me figure out what I need to do to get the full volume and tone back in the combination positions??

I am wanting to replace the single coil neck pickup on my MIM fat strat with a Hot Rails. I am noticing that the recommended wiring for the Hot Rails is much different from that of the stock Strat humbucker that is already in the bridge position. How do I wire up 2 really old single coil pickups so I can chose either pickup but also both - in-series and in-parallel.
Would slider switches be useful to "switch" on/off either pickup ?
How do I go about a switch to reverse the polarity of one of the pickups ?

Each pickup has 2 wires to go to the wiring set-up I ask about, then will poutput this to a vol+tone set-up I have already.

i made this guitar for my GCSE res mat.
i have a bridge postion seymour duncan humbuker and a copy p90 at the neck. im having what i think is a earth hum wheneva the control knobs arnt on maxium. there is also a 3 way switch which works! im confused by the p 90's wiring as i only seem to have, a bare,red and a white. not any others. this doesnt corrispond with any of the wiring diagrams i can find. i dont know the make, and it didnt come with a wiring diagram, as it was cheap..... unlike the seymour duncan lol. cheers barney

I'm building my first guitar, I am installing 2 humbuckers but want to install a 5 way switch instead of a 3 way. I am thinking of 1) neck humbucker 2) neck/bridge humbucker 3) bridge humbucker 4) neck single coil 5) bridge single coil. FMIC replaced a defective bridge pu(didn't work intermitently, then completely)in my 52 reissue tele. At that time the warrenty person modernized the selector config. but didn't use the .022mylar capacitor given to me with the guitar(mod done at my request)
The guitar now besides being way more microphonic than it ever was, makes static and popping noises, (when everything is not grounded by me touching some metal on the guitar) as I simply slide my left hand from one position to the next on the neck without even fretting any strings.
I'm thinking of reversing the selector and capacitor mod to orig....then I could tell if it is the new pickup???
I hear about pickup polarity issues?..
Any thoughts on this.......
I imagine we should have used the included .022mylar cap specifically included for this mod?........jeff

I have just finished building a les paul style guitarand have got to the wiring stage.the only problem i have is that most wiring diagrams show 2 leads to the jack socket, one of which is ground. I have a barrel type socket which has 3 terminals one of which is ground. Can I use either of the other 2terminals for +.

I wanted to know the schematics and or see a diagram of the gibson s-1 it's an early 70's model. I've been having some problems with it and was going to put new pickups in it to fix the situation.
If anyone knows what pickups would sound great please let me know. I've put in some Seymour Duncans in my tele and I liked it. I put in a stacked humbucker in the bridge with a coil tap and man it sounds awesome and gave me a ton of versatility. I thanks you in advance.

I bought an M.S.A universal pedal steel guitat some years ago and someone badly fitted a George L pickup.

The pickup has a white wire, a black wire, a red wire and an earth wire ie a screen he has wired the red and the black together to the red and the white wires to the slieve of the jack and black to the tip.

The screen wire has not been used at all, without actually seeing the setup yourself does this wiring seem to be ok or can you tell me where I could find out the wiring of this pickup.

i got from a friend an ibanez pf 230. it's a three humbucker les paul-type one. the middle pickup is off and i don't know where to reconnect it. should it go directly to the 3-way switch or to one of the volume knobs? i'd appreciate some help on this

Help: Upgrading Affinity Butterscotch Teli with Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups.
1. My affinity Neckpickup only has two wires. The Samarium has an additional green wire. It looks like I solder the black and green wire on the outside case of the volume knob together. Is this correct? Cant understand the purpose if it is going to the same darn place!
2. The Bridge pickup has black wires connected a gound "thing" that you must screw it somewhere. Where?

H All,

I want to wire a 4 way switch to my Telecaster- it has a standard H/B in the neck and a mini H/B in the bridge- both work perfectly as per makers specs.

I have wired both pickups as per various diagrams for typical 4 way switch setups but I'm not getting the results I want- 4th position- both P/ups in series.

i have a telecaster that the volume and tone knobs work in reverse. when you turn the volume up, it goes down and when turn the tone knob for more treble, you get more bass. How can I fix this?

HI, I too am after a wiring diagram for an Aria Pro SLB-2. Bought one second hand and the active circuit is disconnected (a battery was still sitting in the battery compartment with no snap to connect to!). Looks like they attempted to bypass it but the active pickup is not responding so I think I may as well get it back to how it should be if I'm going to have to re-wire!

I have a question and no one has been able to help me. I bought a Seymour-Duncan STK-1BS bridge pickup for my Stratocaster and they didn't put instructions in the box. It has a red, green, black, white and bare wire and I haven't a clue which way to solder them in. I've be all over the web with no luck. Position 1 switch towards the neck is the neck pup, two is the neck and center, three the center pup, four is the center and bridge, and five(all the way towards the 1/4 ) is bridge pup.

Hey Delbert I emailed you but in case you were wondering what yank snatched your email address, I will post it here. Seymour Duncan wiring codes are as follows: black is hot, green is ground, red and white solder together and tape. There is also a bare wire that must be run to ground. If this is still unclear Google seymour duncan and under the first link there will be smaller links, click the wiring diagrams and it will take you to his website. There you can choose what guitar you have and it will tell you how to wire it up. It also has coils splitting diagrams if your in to it.

The reason the diagrams are not in color is because different pickups have different colored wiring. It would be very difficult to list them all here. Check with your pickup manufacturer.

i have a yamaha rgx 612s electric guitar. rewired it for a freind. everything works fine.. except the middle pick up. awesome guitar. sounds great for heavey metal and even blues in the neck pos. has a push pull tone knob, for spliting the humbucker i can only assume, but that does nothing as well. cant figure out what im over looking, .. driving me nuts. im usually pretty good with mods and re-wires. looking for a schematic of some sort to get it going. like i said the middle pick up and the push pull doesnt work, along with the 2,3 and 4 pos on the pick up selector. just the humbucker and the neck.once its back to all sys go its an awesome guitar. powerhouse. right up there with the ibanez and the dean, the charvelle. whatever. and ive realized something, floyd rose style bridges dont actually make a guitar sound any better, in fact there prob not worth the trouble. if any one can help then you would be what they call "the man" ... or "the girl" if theres any girls out there soldering away on their daisy rocks. and if theres anything i can help someone with as far as their guitar goes, lay it on me. i shall do my best. wich is uaually pretty good. thanks!

Simple way to find out... get something metal like a small alan key or screwdriver and gently touch your pickups with it, one at a time (while it is plugged into something of course). you will hear which pickups are active. Simply repeat the process with your switch in different positions to discover which pickups are active and which are not

2014 G&L legacy HB. In middle pic-up position, pic-up goes dead when string touch's it. Is this something to do with phase switch on humbucker?
Does not happen on import series, with out switch.

Nice place you have here. Was member of Music Electronics forum (still am), but pedestrian, "regular" wiring; some creative, some. My request would be ask if you can help me with a diag for a Fender Telecaster with a 5-way, Strat switch; (1st pos) Standard non-stk'd coil, w/pol micro on/on sw, [mounted between VOL knobs, not linked to 5-way at all.] (2nd pos) neck and bridge put together (3rd pos) HB, parallel (4th pos), SC (5th pos) HB, series.

I've been to 60, but took my guitars apart early; to shim the neck for lower action, f'rinstance; a 3/4 National was me first, besides a small covey of acoustics that were never able to hold or even get to, "TUNE". As I got older and braver and with a crazier bunch of fellows, nothing was off limits to experiment with. Running the preamp out, into the input on another amp was an early remod, until it died a terrible electrical death. AND, we didn't burn down anything important!

Out of common courtesy, I didn't want to come in cold and start asking a bunch of favors, but one. The Tele re-wire. The humbucker in the plan is the most hideous pup I've ever seen: the S/D STK T2b, 4-way/gr @ 21 ohms!!!! The Warman (UK)tri-coil G-rail only comes close.
