Yamaha FB-01

The Yamaha FB-01 is the cheapest old Yamaha FM 4 Operator unit you can pick up... check it out

Th Yamaha FB-01 was released amidst the DX flurry of releases around 1985-86.... this was a small tabletop module version of the popular DX range of synths... It is a 4 OP (operator) DX synth.... and... it is multi-timbrel... yup.... but the downside is, you need an editor to edit it.

You do get a bunch of presets to go however.... about 192.... 2 outputs.... up to 8 Multi-parts on 8 channels... you can have  4 parts of 2 notes each, or 2 parts of 4 notes etc... or switch notes to parts/channels.... it works like that, like the TX81Z..... ok for 2 sounds on seperate outs in the mix... another great garage synth.

An 8-voice polyphonic, 8-part multitimbral synthesizer tone generator that made use of FM tone generation.

Despite having a 4-operator FM tone generator, the system is capable of simultaneously playing eight different sounds just like the TX816. Despite appearing to be a more compact version of the TX81Z, which was released in the same year, the FB-01 featured 240 preset voices.

As a low-priced, compact multi-part tone generator, the FB-01 was also used for desktop music production.

Fb01 is a great little fm synth. You can have 116 user patches and 256 factory ones. Edit with Sound Diver and it's better than some dx's.

The FB-01 came out about 1985 NOT 1995.
I have had mine since then. Great for
bell sounds. Brass poor. Typical of
it's FM synthesis format.

Very overlooked little bass beast. Forget the Strings & Brass. just listen to those heavy basses and excellent organs.

you dont need drivers, it's just a sound module. You trigger it with midi from cubase and it makes sounds. You can route the FB01 output back into cubase if you like & if you have a decent asio2 driver soundcard... You can then monitor the sounds in realtime on the cubase mixer and even add realtime fx to the fb01 sounds in cubase mixer as it plays. You need to understand cubase better i think

This is a great little synth for adding extra sounds to a wall of sound setup. I currently use mine to add a poly synth sound to my Korg mx and with a few vsti running poly-six or wave station its a useful (and very cheap) addition sound producer. The presets are pretty good but you do really need an editor to get the most out of it. I am currently looking for a 2nd one. One word of warning it has a very small ventilation grill on the top of the box and overheats very quickly if this is covered. I thought I had killed mine after foolishly placing a keyboard on top of the fb01. However once it coled down it came back to life and has performed perfectly for an additional year. At the price you can find this synth its a real bargain not in the dx 07 league perhaps but still able to produce some great sounds.

Hi, I am a total neophyte just getting into synths, I'm considering buying a FB-01, but have a question or
two if anyone has the time to help out.

What is an editor? Where would i find one? Is an editor expensive or difficult to use/maintain?

I have an Akai MPC 60II, an S1000 and I know my may around Prophet to give you an idea of where I'm
coming from.

any help would be great. Thanks.

Had mine for 15 years now.just set it up again the other week, for nostalgia purposes,it dropped on the hardwood floor from 5 feet up flat on it's back.I plugged it back in and it works great.Try that with some novation or m audio board and you'd take five minutes to sweep it up.I love the 01;s electric pianos that's about all I use it for.
