Yamaha DX9

The Yamaha DX9.... classic yamaha 4 OP FM.... nice keyboard with metal case, 4OP synth engine.... but first of the 4 OP crop, and thus like the DX7, low patch memory space... check it out !
TH Yamaha DX9.... classic yamaha FM.... nice keyboard with metal case, 4OP synth engine.... but first of the 4 OP crop, and thus VERY low patch memory space... so it's sysex dumps all round, although once you get the sounds in you use, there may well be enuff locations.....

Bigger 16 note poly for these units.....but no velocity response accepted via midi ... You had to wait a little later for the DX21/27/100 and dx7-2 for that..... still, there it is.... Comments please !...

I own one of these badboys, and I'm sorry to say that it kinda sits in the corner... I was at one time intrigued by it, before I became so wrapped up in my PC. One thing to keep in mind is that you must store your patches to a cassette not MIDI!!!:( That sucks....
Well I just put up an ad for mine..
$125.00US Thats kinda cheap, but I need to pay rent soon....

Think twice be for you buy one...
Upgrade your PC instead...

I picked up one of these for 60 quid and added it into a system as a master keyboard. It is superb for that and had a nice hefty metal case, also you can use it's sound which are always contemporary and route them into your mix with a fast asio or wdm driver/audio-card setup.

Could anybody help me get a copy of a DX9 owner's manual? I've tried http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/pdf/712.pdf , but it seems it is no more available.
Thanks.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy
of the original voice cassette that came with
the dx9. I have not had any luck getting a
copy of it.

Thanks

Awesome Synth! Cheap, if can find one. Where most dx synths only allow a coarse adjustment of the frequency, this one has fine adjustment for more expressive and ringing (frequency beating) sounds. $100au(typical) is a ridiculous price for this instrument. Who wants a black 4 operator DX when you can have a weird olive colour instead? I also own a DX27, DX21 and TX802 in the FastFourierTransform line of Yamaha synths.

Just picked up a DX9 on ebay for $100.00 including
the shipping. I already own a DX7 but in my haste to
add a backlite LCD display, I accidentally shorted the
display and now I have no display working. Since the
DX9 uses the same LCD display, I'll measure all the
voltages and signals from the main board and compare
them to my DX7. Added note: I did have the backlite display up and running and it was beautiful until stupidity stepped in. Either way, when I get the DX7's display back up I intend to keep the DX9. It's not good to split up family.

Well I don't own it anymore but I had a DX9 which I bought for £60 back in 1998 and kept it for about 6 years. I already own a a TX81Z and at the time, had 2 x DX100's too which also got sold. I have to say that the DX9 synth was probably the only FM synth I have been able to programme successfully; even though the patch memory is very small, I managed to wipe all the user sounds and make my own wierd evolving pads, basses, and fx within hours. I dont understand why or how, but I could sit by the DX9 and be able to programme it instinctively, instead of scratching my head and getting frustrated with the other 4OP synths. I sold it in the end, I did use it for a master keyboard but lack of space in my growing studio and no velocity sensitvity on the keyboard, it had to go. Just wish I could have dumped the sounds I made into my TX before it went as I've never managed to get them back :O( When I bought the DX9 the previous owner had given it a very dodgy hammerite paint job, so I covered it in a tough green adhesive vynil and it looked really cool. Even the guy I sold it too thought it was wicked looking. Happy memories.
