it's not there Akai S950

Akai S950

Akai's upgrade machine next in line from the S-900...Just scraping in to budget territory.... A great little loopmaster and general sampling workhorse , with a bigger memory, higher maximum sample rate, and the all-important 'Time-Stretch' added...... click the title to go to the S-950 page... where you can add your comments .....and read whatever people have posted....

he S-950 was released about 1988, as an upgrade from the S-900..... it was like the old S-900, still 12 bit, but you could expand the ram memory to 2.25mb

Akai also upped the max sample rate to 48k, and added such functions as cross-fade looping as standard.... (s/w upgradable on the S-900)..... most importantly for some, Akai added the Time-Stretch function so essential for matching loops and vocal phrases etc to BPM tempo.......

You also got the ability to use HD disks as well as DD's..... but pretty much the rest is as for the S-900.......stereo out, + 8 mono seperate outs....

So...... if your a user, add your comments please..... a better workhorse than the S-900...... and available fairly cheap...... worth a look for a cheap budget sampler....As used by Moby, D:ream etc.....

i was puttering around the local music shop playing with their Z1 when i spotted this baby in the used rack for ... $175/US! Had the full memory expansion, everything worked ... I almost soiled my panties.

The sound is classic crunchiness, especially at lower sampling rates. The time-stretch is classic Akai. 8 assignable outs are great, but each out can only play one voice at a time. I believe the only multi-voice outputs are the MIX and the L / R outs.

Filter is the bomb, sounds nice and musical. Lotsa stuff you can do with this machine ... this plus a couple synths and an audio/midi sequencer like cakewalk and you've got a great minimum setup ... (like mine haha)

You can download a manual at akaipro.com, but if you have used samplers and keyboards before the 950 isn't that hard to learn.

Oh yeah... I soldered in a standard IEC socket in the back of mine instead of the akai one. Now I can use a standard power lead.

Be careful - if you aren't sure what you are doing get someone who does.

the OS is stored internally ceda, so there's no need for a startup disk (unless you want to use a more recent OS revision and don't want to pay for hte eproms).

LARD SAYS - TOP SAMPLER.

I use the Akai S 950 and my Atari 1040stf Sampler. These 2 things are the best of both worlds.I don't like the pc to make music and never will because when it comes to midi the pc can't match up to the Atari.

this is the grunge'n'grit master. it's best for oldskool rave be it Hardcore or Jungle no doubt!. just try loading an amen or apache break into it and hear the crunch! i've spent time chopping up my breaks and sequencing them with MED (a pc tracker)
samples the 808bassdrum very nice! gotta have deep bass and this baby can blow off doors with it's low freq response!
filter is the nice and warm too. the perfect rave machine, the limited ram makes you work you hard and get creative.

the Operating system is clear, clear akai way of working, fire it on - add some 'programs' - name & record your samples, tweak the them a bit (start time/end time/looping) go back to the program pages and assign that program with your sample of choice (this is on page 05 I beleive), set up your filters and ADSRs and then have FUN!

This is the best sampler to get for that early 90's hiphop sound . I find it to sound a bit nicer then the S900 and it also has more modern features that help you get loops and programs built fast. The A/D converters must be different on the s950 vs. the s900 as well since things sampled on the 950 have a brighter edge to them vs. the dull sound of the s900.

I love this sampler, almost as much as my kid! But it definately will not steer you wrong, wether you're doing Hip Hop or R & B(rough & beautiful) tracks!
