it's not there Jomox AirBase99

Jomox AirBase99

rackmount analog drum module
The Jomox 'AirBass99'..... Not a NATO secret air raid headquarters... but a superb new analog drumrack..... First we had the XBase09... a real analog drum box with full midi control and a built-in X0X style sequencer... Now Jomox are really rolling with several new products out... and the AirBass99 is one of them....If you're in the market for a new dance drum unit to do analog styles such as 808 909 etc, then outside of samplers or sample-rom based drum boxes with some analog-drum-box samples onboard there is very little to choose from... The Drumstation from Novation is excellent using analog-modelling... But for real analog, I'm not aware of any other units on the market apart from these ones from Jomox....and they really are superb instruments with a massive amount of sound-shaping potential....

In essence the AirBass is a reworked XBase09 in a 1U rack with no sequencer. It has the same real analog generated Kik & Snare drum, but it adds 2 real analog generated Toms to the sound arsenal.... As with the XBase09, these instruments have a massive tuning range, and real analog filters

The rest of the sounds (Hi Hat, Clap, Rim Shot, Crash, Ride), follow the original 909 etiquette of being 8 bit rom based samples.... But with the AirBass, there are a few differences.....

Now with the table-top Xbase09 drum machine, you got a sequencer.... The rom samples were not polyphonic.... but the 09 was still incredibly versatile cos the sequencer section allowed you to allocate different samples &/or controller levels for individual beats of patterns... Where the AirBass differs is that now ALL the samples can play at the same time... fully polyphonic.... Not only that, but each sound has a seperate output !!... 10 outs in total !!!...

All these ROM samples have a seperate dedicated real VCF (analog filter to newbies)...so you get 10 drums... all playable simultaneously... each with dedicated output... each with real analog filter... and the whole lot is midi controllable.. AND... all ROM samples can playback in reverse... aha !....

So.... all in all a bloody formidable unit... these Jomox drum boxes can go WAY beyond simple vintage analog drum-box sounds.... In effect you are buying an analog drum synthesiser with all the creativity that implies.... these units will do garage to industrial....

It's a 12V AC wall-wart power supply... 1U rack with midi In, out, thru... and you get a headphone socket & an audition trigger button to setup preset kits without having to attatch a controller unit.... nice...

Also you get huge amounts of preset storage, with 1024 programmable presets and 500 rom presets... so it comes with 500 setup ready to go kits !!!.... blimey...

Well... There you have it.... bit late getting this item added, but I just got out of hibernation from re-doing the new site.... I'll try to get a real-audio demo for it... but in the meantime, check out the XBase09 demo audio... cos this unit gets pretty much the same sounds........ Here's the spec's...

well ive had my airbase 99 for 2 weeks now,,what can i say,,this is the dogs pods..its so good,i admit its my first drum machine, but ive tried a few i.e novation drumstation, roland dr202,etc
but this really is my cup of tea,the sounds are amazing, from long 808 to tight as arses 909 sounds, long decay, giving that rolling kick sound that makes my day,as far as technical specs go,im new to this so im not really the 1 to say,all i can say is every sound is easy to edit and change, the 2 lfos give it some really fucked sounds.one thing i must say is if ya like techno and trance, then id put ya money on this,it really has got those sounds ya hear on a 12" or in a club and think oh my....
overall
looks 4/5 (didnt think orange and sliver wold go but well looks quite mean actually)
sound 5/5
ease of use 5/5 i was going backwards and forwards in 10 mins with this
quality 5/5 very tight

my overall rating is 4.5 i would give a 5 but its my first piece of hardware and dont want to get carried away

p.s,,as i said this is my first piece of hardware, and im slowly buying pieces..i will be buying this
jomox airbase99
access virus
supernova
jv1080
retrosynths 777
yamaha 03d mixer
tc elec 96k finalizer
yamaha nsm10 studio speakers
bayer amp
opcode 64x studio

does anyone know a reason i shouldnt buy any off these items cos ive done lots of overtime and saved for 3 years to start buying them????/

Has anyone compared this unit with the Novation DrumStation...? I'm looking for a decent MIDI drum module that's more versatile than 'just a x0x clone.... must have good MIDI control !
Any ideas anyone ?

The MIDI control on this synth is superb. If you pop on over to the JoMoX site you can have a look see at the manual. I used to own a Drumstation before I moved on up to the Jomox.
On controllabilty: The Jomox is every bit as programmable and controllable as the Drumstation, even without an array of knobs. The Jomox has two syncable LFO's with an envelope and filter on every part. Very nice. The Drumstation has some knobs and transmits data, but doesn't have the parameters per part of the Jomox. The kick drum itself has 10 on the Jomox.
On sounds: Again, the Jomox has it. The analog envelope/filter combination give it a real solid punch over the whole module. Tha kick drum can boom longer and deeper than any Roland product and can shrink up as hard and tight as you want it. The sounds sets include programs modeled after the sounds of Frankie Bones, Richie Hawtin and 808 State among others. The sounds are based off of four kits, the "808", "909", "CR78" (hellyeah on that, what a great hip-hop box that is!) and a lives set, which ain't quite Alessis, but sounds pretty good.
I wrangled my Jomox for $600 USD new...more likely you can get one for around $800, but worth every penny. There are also 10 individual outs on this pup, one fore each instrument. Handy little light that blinks with MIDI activity. Nice paint job, looks good in the rack. Run it with a Doepfer MAQ16/3 if you have it and set it to control your favorite parameters at 16th notes. very nice.

I am thinking about "upgrading" from a drumstation to an Airbase... Is this a good move??

The AirBase is one of my favorite instruments (yes "instrument"), and I have all analog gear; with the filter, the LFO's, and MIDI controllers that control every parameter and with the ability to record all your tweaks, I cannot see anytime in the future where I will get rid of this machine. Only thing that would be better would be if you could pan the instruments on the way to the main outs--you have to use the individual outs to get a L/R mix--nevertheless, the sound and usability are #1 on my list and Jomox delivers on both! I've never owned a 909/808 etc., but why would you want those machines when this will emulate them both PERFECTLY plus provide an almost infinite amount of new drum and synthy-sounds?
