it's not there Korg ELECTRIBE-R

Korg ELECTRIBE-R

The Electribe drumbox - bargain s/hand item with modelling drumsounds.
2 new units out from Korg both off-shoots of the Prophecy/Z1 line emanating from the mysterious 'OASYS' system from which these ranges' sounds are apparently drawn...... Both are aimed at the 'Dance' market, kinda like Korgs answer to the MC 'Groovebox' series from Roland ... and very interesting they are too....

You get a synth version - the ELECTRIBE-A... and a drum version - ELECTRIBE-R ..... each with Roland-X0X style sequencer running across the bottom.....Here's the DRUM version - the ELECTRIBE-R...

The ELECTRIBE-R ---- Very interesting Templar !... is all I can say - this Electribe-R unit is very similar to something like the JOMOX X-BASE.... The more i tlook at it, the more potentail i see - this is going to be a killer product for Korg I reckon if they market it right... It's a killer drumbox !!....

Pretty much true to the original 909 concept of main drums analog & percussion & hatz samples, the 'Tribe-R has it's main drums modelled - so you get 4 analog modelled drums for kik, snare and 2 others using parameters like pitch, modulation depth, waveform shape etc to get sounds... whilst the the hats and percussion - (in the 'Tribe's case - Clap) - is via samples..... so you get 8 note poly - 4 models & 4 samples - hat-closed, hat-open, crash & clap... AND ALSO .... 2 extra parts of audio-input....

This 'Tribe-R, along with the Jomox and Drumstation is one of the most interesting drum boxes to hit the streets in recent years i'd say.... It's got alot of potential WAY above normal drum-boxes... I'd love to give it a go... You've got great flexible tone generation, alied to that bloody excellent sequencer that can also record controller AND fx movement - you can clock the 'Tribe's sequencer or run it as a sound-module from your PC or outboard sequencer too.... great !!... you get the best of both worlds.... You can take it to a jam or studio and create stuff while the vibe is there, take it home, edit it, dump it over to your pc seq' and edit stuff whatever - it's cool to have the both option....

On top of all that - you got the external audio inputs too - not alot to say more than that - you can input audio devices and create synthesis with the controllers, fx with the fx controllers, and gated arpeggiated patterns too..... All the sounds go to a stereo out, but it's cool cos you have onboard fx....... VERY VERY versatile -....

Well, I guess it's all down to one thing... what does it sound like - for that i guess you'd better listen to the Z1 drums.... I'd lurve to get me paws on this tho... Top marks to Korg for this item - I have been a tad unkind in the past about the Z1 & Trinity which I found a bit dull, but this ELECTRIBE-R rocks mate!!....

This box is absolutely delicious! Its potential is icredible. The more i play with it, the more insane things i hear from it. Beware of the delay knobs!

For all you Canadians, the price is around $689.99, pretty good deal, Eh?

Not a 909 at all. The cymbals aren't rough enough, the kick not deep enough. But what other sounds it can do! The sequencing is real easy, its easy to change steps real-time. The sounds are insane - very limited controls it seems, but it seems like all sounds are very cool on it. Good for electro, techstep, and other genres where being EXACTLY a 909 isn't so critical.

I just tried this thing in guitar center today, i didnt think it would be that cool but MAN!!!!! its awesome!!! think like the versatility of Stomper with an awesome sequencer and other cool sounds plus even neater params to edit. my next purchase.

well what can i add..the audioinput is a neat item..it clocks with the beat and make weird noise if you ringmodulate any sound, voice or guitar or whatever, with the percussion sound.
the preset patterns are also excellent,
i never saw a drummachine that plays patterns named drum&bass or garage or jungle and actually sound like that as well.and not some cheezy sound-a-like but yes a dead on thight pattern, ready to use.once again..the sound is absolutely superb, clean, thight, heavy and sparkling.
can't wait for the big version of this beasty though, it will feature more samples, oscilators and most of all more outputs.cos the outputs are the one and only let down on this machine, only two it has.should have been 4 at least right?but overall this one gets a 10 out of 10 from me.
bye bye.

take it to a real tech-head who knows his shit and they can sort that out i'm sure - if they can do it with a 606 (i used to have a 6 output TR606) they can do it with an electribe i bet...

click that link above and just listen !!! - awoooooah !!.. i want , i want, i want !!!

I've been using mine for 3 months and I love it. It can generate kicks with an unreal amount of bass.. watch your speakers! my only complaint is that the drum samples (taken from the 909 i'm sure) are 16 bit and not 12, so they don't cut through the mix the same way the 909 does.... but for the price, it's a hell of a deal!

The newest additions to Early Outward's (my gear) equipment is the ER-1 and EA-1. The ER-1 really amazed me. I can't believe the crazy space noises that keep generating form it. Since we rely heavily on midi sync clock, the ER-1 has brought another demension to our sound. If you do'nt go into it expecting it to be a 909, but yet instead look at it like a new way of beat making you'll be very happy. I really did'nt want my sounds to be to familliar so tweaking this thing to hell to get new, dare I say groundbreaking sounds, has made me very pleased.

I use it live about 3 times a month and it has never let me down. The mute and solo capabilities make it possible for me to drop out and fade back up without ever changing patterns. And these to functions execute fairly precisely. You can break down say solo one part, and twiddle it to death with delay and Mod speed tweaks, man! My favourite drum box by far. The EA-1, same thing can't expect it to do a 303, expect it to do new different things and you'll be satisfied. Create, move forward. Love.

i did a gig two weeks ago and anyone who says the tribe ain't kicking, did not hear it play on a big big system for sure.i must say that i don't really use the pcm's anymore cos sampled hihats and tamb's etc just sound better,
but now we have the tribe only for kicks and electronic snares.(pan the two hard left right...and what have you got?the perfect kik and snare machine!)

17-Nov-99

erm..did i say a new version?what i meant was that i would not be surprised if the smartasses at korg just released this electribe R&A,to finance a bigger better full-featured one...same bussines trick that ROLAND pulled of with their stupid groovebox 303..they released it to get money for- and global interest in the 505.(wich ain't half bad for its purpose)i wanna bet that was their hidden agenda.

Excellent Electro machines. Well worth the cash and becoming fairly abundant second-hand as some newbie-types have trouble wrestling with the seqeuncers. Totally unique products (IMO) ...a full scale pro version? Please!

This is without doubt one of the greatest drumboxes ever! The analog modelling makes a very wide range of sounds possible, so you can use it for drum 'n bass, breakbeat, tekno, acid, terror, jungle, trance, etc. If you route the sound though an external effectproceccor, and add some distortion, reverb, pitch shift or flanger, it sounds absolutely incredible!!! It's extremely good for live mixes, which are, in my pov, better then sequenced songs because it's got more human feel and sounds less static. Same goes for samples. Anyway, it's a typical Korg product; lots of flexible, realtime control, fantastic sound and not ridiculously overpriced.

This thing is sweet.I bought a mc505 a couple of years ago then got a korg etribe r last week and i love it way more than my 505.

hello all,

I have the ea-1 & not the er-1. I think both are slamming for the $$ involved, though the ea-1 sounds a little too "metallic" to me at times..

I don't understand how newbies are having trouble with the sequencer. How much more simple does it need to be really? Sheesh.

The 'Tribe R is a phat machine. The bass sounds not-too-buzzy, if you tweak it right, and the bass overdrive knob helps a lot. Forget intuitive, this unit is SIMPLE to learn to use.

As far as EFX it's a little thin - one global delay processor, and two ring mods. Some flexibility there would be nice, like a resonant/hi/lo/bandpass filter, etc. But indeed this isn't an EFX-box and isn't meant to be one. It's a bare-knuckle drum synth that does a damn good job of being just that. Don't waste your money tracking down x0x machines that cost way too much. Of coursde, it's NOT a 909, but then again who needs a steenkin' comparison?!? If you love twiddling knobs as I do, then you'll definitely love this box.

ModAsBlue

08-Feb-00

This thing is just an immediately gratifying toy...I couldn't see using it for much besides electro or booty. The sounds are punchy but cheezy...i've borrowed my friend's ER-1 for about 2 months and I have no desire to buy one. It is at least easy to use and would be a fun first-timer machine or, if you have money to blow, it CAN produce some UNIQUE sounds...I personally don't like the sounds and it's not very usable for me.

Dan

Simply the best most versatile drum machine/tone generator ever made PERIOD

TweakIt007

16-Feb-00

Hey, I keep on hearing rave reviews on this and was wondering, first off, which would be better. Before I ask this, I have a Yamaha DJX keyboard and want something to program basslines and kick patterns, but not too complicated, as I am a beginner. Does this work well with MIDI, or is it cranky? I will probably get both but I dont know which one first. I want the EA-1 for its ability to make sounds, but then I want the ER-1 for its ability to make drum loops etc..

Also, is this(these) things easy to use? Would they make a good setup with a keyboard? I wanna get into the PsyTrance, DnB, Jungle, and faster type styles. Rave shit, you know what Im talking about.

PLEASE EMAIL ME OR POST HERE!!!!!!

TweakIt007 (so far i can only rate it a 5 cause i hear its great.)

IR

Tweakit
If you're lookin to program that keyboard through something you'll probably want something with an external sequencer, I have a djx too (a suprisingly good keyboard for bassically being a piece of crap)and I program through my dr-202 wich has keyboard setup pads, very easy to do.

Great box at a great price. Snare drum not powerful enough and the whole unit's sounds lack "punchiness" - it needs to run through a compressor to stand out as a rhythm track.

But otherwise, the creativity factor is incredible, this box is a blessing for those into Kraftwerkian percussion noises, and the gated input feature is awesome.

I've personally found out that the ER-1 works best for me as a background percussion element, the crisp, metallic sounds really enhance a ryhthm track, especially if you have lots of lo-fi drum loops.

27-Jun-00

i just played with one for a few munites the other day and i liked its almost immediat satisfaction but as far as i can tell it is limeted by its total sounds that can be used! how many are there? is it possible to add more types of sounds or are you limited to the preprogramed sounds that seem to be just old techno house samples? i wish to create hardtrance in the end. is there something else i should consider for more or originality? keep in mind its the sequencer that turned me on the most

nathan

13-Jul-00

I went into Turdkey in London to get a new toy and tried out the ER-1. I was really impressed and bought one. I'm glad I did, I no longer have to spend ages looking for a decent kick sample or trying to synthesize one.
The presets are actually pretty good and range from full on gabba(gabber?) to cheesy bossa nova tings. There's some pretty nice DnB beats too (although I'm not too well up on DnB stuff, so they may sound dated/watered down to an expert).

The bass is awesome from them, they are pretty flexible, cheap and look great in the dark!! :D

i think this is gonna be the next one on my list,Orbital used it for most of the beats on Middle Of Nowhere, and those beats are Orbital beats........enough said.can you feed drum samples into the machine?? or it only a synthesizer?

olafmol

31-Jul-00

how can you want to buy this thing if you don't even know it's specs?

only because orbital uses it? there are also loads of crappy productions using an electribe.....

Well - my ER-1 is pissing me off right now. You know the 16 little buttons on the bottom? Well, I can't have more than 8 of them lit at any one time or else the thing shuts offs and starts up again (like a reset, I guess). Then, if I try to save something (like a change I made to a pattern or sounds) it resets again. I restored the factory settings and now all the sounds have a 0 setting. Like volume, pitch etc.

Time for some work. Pissed off though, it's only 1 1/2 years old and it gets VERY nice treatment. Quality issues? I'm gonna have to give it a low rating. What good is a great sounding piece of gear if it don't work right?

Its cheap, and its a drum machine.

Oh and its easy to use and sounds great.

Not for people who like realism, more for people who like blood coming from their ears.

Psionx

18-Dec-00

Basically....NO its not :(
The kicks are poppy and thin and when gating external audio you hear horrible clicks, i guess it could use an attack knob to remedy this.
Overall, its useless for trance and is only of any real use for strange percussive sounds etc.

casparproject

18-Dec-00

Weblink: link

If you compress the kick separately, which you should do anyway, the kicks are killer. To do this pan it hard left, and the other stuff hard right. Especially for trance, where you want to have the option of having bassy kick tones, or fast pitch modded attacks. I admit, it's not good for everything, it's kinda useless for snares, but it's still a kickass drum machine.

Corrective Vision

21-Dec-00

This little gadget can really pump out some original percs. Wouldn't get rid of it if I had to, the sounds are too unique. Would recommend this and its brother piece EA-1 to any rookie to feel how analog works. Tap tempo is so damn handy to boot.

Bad ass..
Had it for about a year, loved it for a week, then thought 'oh its a bit limited', then over the next few months got to realy love it.
A few things I like:
Low boost knob acts like a low res filter sweep , subtle.
The sampled hats and clap have been recored with reverb! Bad!
The hats and claps can be sent to audio input and have the reverb ended abruptly, Good!
You can make evil metalic hi hats with the randomn mod type, cool.
Ring mod makes any sound evil (depends on taste!)
Overall very nice machine, Very good to use live. You could make whole compositions with this, and an effects unit. The more you use it the better you get. Theres no limit. I would like to compare it to an 808, thats the sound it reminds me of.

damn flexiple. audio in parts are nice to hook up (mono) to other electribes on the

ive used it for 4years and woulnt trade or sell it for anything.
its also compact and beautiful.

KORG ER 1 combines flexibility and great sound.if you have one try to use the audio inputs and trigger external synchronised audio like pads or filtered hi hat loops.add a a little delay and a panning automation.if you create electronic music you have an ultimate tool on your hands. To get all the power of this groove box you will need data sheet for nrpn messages(download it from Korg.com)if you have a computer based secuencer (i prefer ableton live)using nrpn messages you can have total control and automation for all parts.

the electribe-r looks like a well-wicked piece of kit, am saving up to buy some musical equipment and i will deffinately be checking this cheeky little machine out for deffinate. I am no pro-musician but i have a wealth of knowlege of musical gear since i have been studying technology since 1980 when i was just 7 years old. i am now nearly 37 and just as passionate and enthusiastic about technology now as i was then.
