Yamaha MD8 8-track Mini-Disc Multitrack Recorder (MD-Data Media)
Released 1998 - Eighteen months after the successful launch of the MD4, the first professional mini disc system, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division, is launching the MD8 Multitrack Mini Disc recorder, the only 8-track mini disc recorder in the world. The MD8 features superb audio quality, convenient portability, removable recording disc, all at an attractive price point of $1,399. The MD8 is the least expensive digital multitrack system available today. The flexible 12-input mixer features 3-band EQ with sweepable mids, two aux sends, 2 mic inputs with balanced XLRs, 48-volt phantom power, and independent cue level and pan controls. Channel flip switches enable up to 20-inputs at mixdown.
Utilizing Mini Disc (MD) Data format removable discs, the MD8 boasts a 20Hz-20kHz frequency response, ultra low noise, and zero percent wow-and-flutter or pitch drift. MD Data discs offer the ability to erase and record on the same disc one million times, and unlimited track-bouncing with negligible degradation.
"We are offering our customers a complete, high-performance, digital recording system for a price just a slight bit higher than an 8-track cassette," states John Schauer, product manager, Pro Audio Group. "The MD8 provides more features than any other mini disc system currently available-true, digital mini disc professional recording."
A single data disc provides up to 18 minutes of high-quality 8-track recording, which can be extended by using the 4-, 2-track, or mono modes. 8-tracks can be recorded simultaneously. The Yamaha MD8 provides powerful editing functions like Copy, Move, Divide, Combine, Renumber, and Erase. Songs can be rearranged, lengthened or shortened. Strong parts can be repeated, and weak parts deleted. The user can combine all fully-recorded tracks to any of the same tracks without any track loss. In this way, the MD8 functions like a recorder with more tracks. Songs that may have been recorded on the Yamaha MD4, for instance, can be converted to 8-tracks by using the Copy function with the ability to reorder tunes, erase or duplicate. The MD8 offers instant access to any point on the disc plus programmable Auto Punch In/Out with extremely tight accuracy (11.6 ms), multiple-take, cue list-style playback, and plus/minus 10% pitch control.
The Yamaha MD8 has three recording modes offering total recording times of 37 minutes per track in the four-track mode, 74 minutes for stereo recording, and 148 minutes for mono recording.
