it's not there Yamaha DSP1624

Yamaha DSP1624

OH GOD !!....HOLD THE FRONT PAGE (26/3/98)... HOLD OFF YOUR PURCHASES... WE'RE REALLY ROLLING NOW........ SEEMS LIKE THE EVENT AND KORG 12-12 SYSTEMS AS I PREDICTED WERE JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.... COS....LOOK-OUT !!........HERE COMES THE SYSTEM TO CLEAN UP FROM YAMAHA.....Finally, as we reach a time where a really powerful pc is going to cost WAY less than a stand alone 8 track hard disk unit, we now get stuff like this to take-away with it.....

Now I checked with Yamaha today...... here we go...

ok...on the phone to yamaha now.......ring ring...ring ring.... hello... etc..... ok.....we have the tech man at last.....

DSP-1624 CARD

It's a pci busmaster card occupying a pci slot on your pc............it has 2 analog inputs & 2 analog outs + s/pdif/coax..... the coax digital goes up to 24bit but can suppoort 16 bit s/pdif obviously......now......

Onboard the card.... are 5 VLSI DSP chips from the O2R mixer........ !!!!!..... the card is supported by Steinberg, Cakewalk, Logic, SECK'D-samplitude, etc etc.... basically by the time of release in July , all the major s/w houses will have driver support....

Now, a single card supports 16 internal virtual audio tracks..... + 8 external simultaneously......a total of 24 tracks/busses...all with eq, and fx.... so for example.... in VST......lets say you have 8 audio mono tracks playing back, with or without midi......or any combination of mono/stereo tracks up to 16 total channels (with one card)......

When you go to the VST monitor/mixer section and pull up the 4 band parametric eq., it is actually addressing the eq on the onboard dsp chips on the card..... so the card keeps the 16 mono busses seperate and you can add eq which is processed by the cards dsp mixer chips !!!..... Not only that... but also the fx are the same..... pull up a VST fx rack, and hey presto.... the fx on the card are listed... and can be applied and edited from VST fx rack panel !!!........ shit !!!....... so ALL your eq, fader, pan and fx are all coming from the cards dsp chips.....

Finally you can sum the individual channels to any of the stereo outs on the card, digital or analog for a total onboard digital-domain mix !!...... ok......so you have 16 busses inside the pc routed to the cards dsp chips and then out to a final stereo mix vai digital or stereo analog outs.......but also....

AX-44 [SEPERATE 4 IN - 4 OUT UNIT]

oK..... you then add the AX- 44 converter unit/s.....these are a 4 analog in - 4 analog out box that sits in a drivebay on your pc with rca connectors....it's even got a headphone socket... the inputs are mic/line level, with 100bd dynamic range...

the card supports up to 2 AX-44 units to give 8 analog In & OUT..!!!..... and check it out....... you can have the 16 pc audio tracks playing thru the card... and blend with it up to 8 incoming seperate channels from up to 2 AX-44 units..... a total of 24 channels...16 inside the pc allocated to audio tracks..... and up to 8 external incoming audio channels routed in via the external inputs...... so.....

You can mix the incoming external inputs.....2 (from card) - 4 (from one AX unit) - or 8 ( from 2 AX units) with the pc audio tracks..... and the cards dsp chips keep the 24 channels seperated on 24 internal busses....... full 4 band eq, fade, pan and fx can be added to internal and external sounds via s/w......and check it out...... EVERY SINGLE CHANNEL ALSO HAS compressor, gate or whatever insert fx as well as the aux send fx busses from the VST or whatever s/w mixer !!!.......

Finally.......

The whole lot is then routed to either digital out for a direct to digital mix, or you can route incoming audio channels and the pc audio to any of the 8 analog outs (or 2 with just the card)... or 4 with one AX unit)......... fackin' 'ell !!!!!!!..........

There is no fixed RRPrice..... but yamaha are going to clean up with this one I reckon.,.... for 2 reasons......

1. They never release bugged or flawed products in my experience......
2. What can touch this ??..... cos you are getting 24 channels of full mixing, fx and everything via one card.... so your pc cpu does NONE of the work except controlling the set-up parameters of the card..... !!!

Price.......??....... well, no total commitment from Yamaha for price.... but expected to be around 600 uk sterling.... less than 1000 US dollars..... with the 4 channel AX units at around the 200 - 250 UK.....$500 US dollar mark..... awesome !!!!!!!

Finally.... as if that wasn't enuff...... yes.... you can add another card to the pc... and with the addition of 4 AX-44 units, (2 for each DSP-1624 card), you get..... oh deary me !!......48 channels of audio....... 32 from s/w audio.....and 16 incoming !!!!!!!.........Future plans include, ADAT light-pipe compatible daughterbaord amongst others....

Bloody hell !!!!!!!.....I'll just wipe up the drool now........

It's a tad frustrating huh, cos I now have to wait for July time to get they system going.... I was going for a Gina.... but I'd be a loony to do that now... (unless I wanted traditional outboard audio mixing...which hey ... is still a VERY strong option....it's alot more immeadiate than s/w mixing.... and there's alot you can do that can't be done in s/w.....but....I want it...I WANT IT !!!!!!!...... and hellfire.... I can add an extra AX unit if I want to get the option to mix externally on a hardware mixer anywaY... so you can't loose huh??......

Please.......If you want a total internal/external pc digital system, wait for this system....it's gonna be your ideal one....... and cheaper than the other non-dsp systems......Top marks to Yamaha....... and they make wicked bikes too !!....... that was all we needed..... a major corporation to step in and rip up the market...... heh heh.... maybe Suzuki & Honda will release something... heh heh... the GSXR or FIREBLADE dsp mixer system... heh heh......wonder if I can get a Harris frame for it !!... enjoy !!!

(UPDATE 4/1/99: VST now shipping new version 4 with DSP compatibility.... which means on paper, VST should list the dsp fx & eq on it's mixer & FX racks.....Others to follow, I understand the next Logic version will have support for the DSP too)

Does the following sync problem apply to dual DSP1624 cards? (taken from Steinberg's UK website):

It is possible to playback audio through multiple sound cards. However, you may encounter problems with synching of audio tracks.

Explanation: We use the clock rate of the sound card as a clock source to ensure synchronisation between midi and audio. As clock rates on different sound cards vary, it is therefore not possible to playback audio through different cards in exact sync.

What do you think?

Hi there

I'm looking for a realy clean digital I/O card (the best), that can do

realy good mixing and EQ (real time, min 16 chanel) with 1/2 in/out,

to be combined with a stand alone ad/da for the best convertion(no THD,

no jiter, high s/n, over samplling...). can YOU recomend me a good

product('s)???

BW, is a digital mixer like 03D is better then mixing on a pc???

One Time

This sounds like a bangin' sound card. But, what I want to know is.....it is confirmed that if you hook up two of these sounds cards, your going to get smooth 32- track playback, correct? Also, the eq's on the O2R can't be that bad right ( I mean, that's an award - winning system) ?

...Another thing, are the effects on the card only reverb or are there other algorithms in addition to the reverb?

....Let me know.

KILO

WELL, i reckon that yamaha would be VERY stupid to release this until they have full tried & tested drivers for the major 3 s/w's (vst ,Logic, cakewlk)........ and i cant see yamah NOT getting that together.... they seem to be well on the ball right now... look at their recent product releaes... all excellent.... brilliantly cost effective (that a-3000 is the nutz for the money).... and well built......

that has always been yamaha....just like their bikes.....fast as fuck.... and mega reliable....

so..... as long as it does this... i reckon it'd be a killer..... there is an optical board due for it... an 8 channle adat board is duesoon after release date..... so that is taken care of..... and for the guy above... the extra 250 quid pannels offer 4 outs.... just exactly what you asked for as just enuff for you.... I am more interested in it as a solution to get all the audio out via a single stereo s/pdif alonmg with blended incoming external audio for a total direct to dat mix......

now as for the quality of the mixer eq as noted above....

I have only listened in detail to the pro-mix...... only heard the 02R and O3D at shows..... the promix was very impressive.... bit like when you get your first dat player.... y'know... you hit play.... there is no hiss or noise and suddenly...BANG..... in comes the audio from dead silence.... very impressive...

So it was with the promix...... the guy hit play... and there was silence.... then the sound exploded form the speakers...... such a difference between off and play.... as there was absolutely NO buss noise from the mixer... the dynamics were amazing.... so punchy and tite.... only trouble was... the material was really site muisc... but technically.... the perceived dynamic was very impressive......

so the yamaha card should get that same ability..... and with up to 32 noise gates and compressors available..... that should be a quiet enuff system for ya.... hey... you only need to add a tweak of eq y'know.... eq isn't compulsary.... most mixes can be fixed by altering the relative levels.... well, it should be that way.... if you ahve to eq everything on the baord, there's something wrong with your method....

This sounds absolutely F***ing,bloody fantastic,

and try beating me away with any heavy and hard

objects once i have the money,but...Isn't it the

case that any time a card comes on the market

that the manufacturers claim has some kind of astronmical db range (96 and up)it can almost immediately be disclaimed by the musicmags because of the inherent interference caused by the circuitry inside our computers affecting the da/ad

converters?We then end up with a 88db din.range.

Of course I'm nitpicking but I would like to hear

your views on this.

cheers and thaks for a great site

Eric

well, not with the Event cards right !?..... and have you ever seen yamaha release a faulty or bugged product ?..... i doubt they will.... they are too big... and this has been in development for a long time,...... I'm gonn a check it as soon as i can get one....

Look, just remeber, you NEVER want to be the first kid on the block with a new product. In my experience buying a soundcard right when it comes out is like paying full price to be a BETA tester.

kilo

05-Apr-99

what they mean there is... "when you are using different cards from different manufacturers".... i reckon that is it.. cos it wont apply to cards with the same make & model.... well, it shouldn't...

Weels

05-Apr-99

Whats with the lack of an optical I/O interface? Maybe I'm kookoo, but I don't really need that many I/Os. I'd rather have 4 32bit I/Os. Maybe somtime in the future when they got more dodads for it.

kilo

05-Apr-99

well, for a start it gets you 24 seperate programmable multi-insert fx such as compressor gate etc... on every channel.....

you also get 2 high quality multi-fx units to utilise....... again all editable and saveable via vst fx section

you get relief from the cpu for up to 32 channels of 4 band programmable reraltime eq...... including real-time eq changes......

also realtime pans, fades etc .... which should be faster as the cpu aint doing them...... all in all it means a cheaper system machine to get a higher track rate..... whilst utilising any amount of realtime manipulation & fx......

a good 3rd party digital reverb plug-in s/w programme costing alone more than the DSP-1624 card, run from vst via the cpu processing taxes the cpu by about 70%...... so there's a saving for a start..... lets face it the basic vst reverb aint all that.... it's a demo quality reverb..... with the card you get 2 nice yammy reverbs if desired..... all editable.... and saveable... ok.... they aint lexicons..... but then again.... the lexicon card and dsp system is about 2K plus !!!......isnt it ??..... I'm sure it is......

plus.... a great quality card and extra outs/ins if needed.....20 bit converters and 32 bit internal processing... lets not forget this will only cost about 500-600 Uk sterling....... not bad huh

Kilo,

Thanks for the clearer explanation of how this baby will work - easier to understand than Yamaha's blurb on their site.

I'm sure this will clean up and make the Event cards a flash in the pan.

I'm gonna wait for this one.

It's more an 02R on a card than an 03D on a card I think !

They have big plans for this and I think they'll bring out an alternative A/D convertor than the AX44, with external convertors and a separate box so you don't have all these cables hangin' out front of your PC.

Yamaha 100 million out of 5.

Avene

05-Apr-99

So, lets get this straight, all the processing is done on the cards right? so, it wouldn't be using too much of the CPU? That's a mad concept though, putting a mixer on a card, damn, and having 2 will give you 16 channels, awesome.

I just checked the page, and it seems as if it's like an 03/D on a card. Oh well, it looks like I'm gonna have to start saving.

ps. Kilo, no word wrap on this one?

Dennis

05-Apr-99

I WANT this thing !!!

Todd Simmons

05-Apr-99

OK, I admit that having that much DSP on the basic

card is pretty impressive, but I have to take issue

with Yamaha on their choice of I/O. Based on

everything I've read, it isn't a good idea to have

A/D and D/A converters inside a computer case due

to all the RFI present. Maybe they overcame this

with extra shielding, but I doubt it. They should

provide the option of external converters with

1/4" balanced jacks in the manner of Event Layla.

Dave

05-Apr-99

At first thought, the Yamaha card sounds great, but what advantage does it offer over Cubase VST or Cakewalk using a decent sound card and the pc cpu, after all, that's what it's there for :)

kilo

05-Apr-99

non-no Avene.... having 2 will give you 48

channels of total recall automation...with

seperate insert processing for EVERY channel

... plus all the aux send fx.....for every

channel..... plus full 4 band parameric eq....

!!!!!!!!!!! ... and the cpu doesnt do ANY work

.....except the midi, and delivery of the audio

data to the card

Avene

05-Apr-99

Kilo, yeah it sounds pretty impressive. If it doesn't use any CPU, then that's great, as it would be a much cheaper alternative to Soundscape or that Ensoniq Paris system. I know a couple of guys who run Soundscape on a p75 and get some good results. This Yamaha one seems to offer a lot more, and lets you use your favourite hdr/sequencer.

A guy at the music shop I get my gear from, was telling me the other day that Creamware are bringing out this card that does everything, synthesis, sampling, hard disk recording, and anything else you can think of. Apparantly it uses 6 of these really powerful chips that are supposed to be really popular. I can't remember what they are, but I've heard that even just one of them can do a lot. Anyone know Creamwares site address?.

PS. Cool, you got the word wrap going.

kilo

05-Apr-99

. the paris gets you hardware mixer.... (although i'd expect yamaha to release a dedicated control interface in due course..... also, the soundscape has it's own processsors and h/drives outboard..... so it does more work than a pc running this yamaha stuff........ the soundscape will run on a p75-90 or whatever..... but vst wont even with the yamaha card jobbie......

Avene

05-Apr-99

Another thing, the eq will sound the same as that of the program it's running on, won't it? I mean I hope it doesn't sound anything like that crappy eq they've got on the 02/r's.

i just saw a review of this new yamaha jobby on dancetech.com

One thing I want to know, can you route aux sends

Prophet

05-Apr-99

This card is incredible. To answer One Time's question, I can't see how you CAN'T get smooth 32-track playback, cause the cards link up with an internal patch cable. Talk about superior design.

BTW - The internal link can also be used to connect the card to the Yamaha SW1000XG, the PCI card equivalent of their MU100R. The SW1000XG's got it's own set of DSP's, and the link will work as a jumper to move audio back-n-forth. Beautiful. Makes for a great system if you use MIDI and audio.

Sounds like a great card but I only use my limited hard disk space to record vocal tracks while I sequence all of the midi with Cubase VST. I take the vocals out through my Gina card into a mixer with the sequenced keyboards live in to the mixer as well. I was considering getting the new Yamaha 01V digital mixer to keep the vocals digital throughout the mix. Am I better off dumpin' Gina (like the pig that she is) and going with the Yamaha card. If I'm making any sense at all, try and steer me right. Thanks.

Any advice appreciated.

Michael

05-Apr-99

I have a DSP Factory and love it. I started using it with Cakewalk and it didn't support the features I wanted in the card. You could only use effects on the master out. I started using Cubase 24 and the support for the card is amazing. I can actually run my guitar through the card just to use the effects units. I'm pretty sure I have only scrathed the surface on what I can do with the DSP Factory. I burned a CD of a couple tunes and it sounded great in the car and living room.

what happened to this wonderful-sounding card? I've been waiting for something cheaper than "Pro-Tools" that can run on a PC for multi=track digital audio editing/mixing. (nice to find one that can be synched to MIDI and/or AVI movie files.

I plan to purchase the DS2416 because it seems like a great system, but it looks reasonable only for post production. The inputs appear marginal and I plan to use a mic preamp infront of a Layla system to get the data in. When I quizzed Yamaha about putting a mic-pre in front of the board they said it was better not to go into the analog inputs of the board, but to go directly to disk.

My question is if you bypass the DS2416 inputs can you still use the compression or other dynamics processors on the way in. Does anyone know the answer to this. Yamaha seems to be completely clueless here.

Thanks,

I very please with the card, it is the software developers were my frustration lies. To see what it can do, I down loaded from Canam their Audio Pro their trail software. Unbelievabe. They really show off what this card can do. You may want to check this out. So far I'm not impress with Cakewalks efforts to fully use this card (and that is my primary package, very disapointed).

Does anyone know of a web discussion group or news group starting up about this card?

Jay

05-Apr-99

I love the new Yamaha card, I don't have one, but it's a great idea.

But I have a question. Will it work with an Event Layla, to use it's proper 4dbu balanced ins and outs? Would the Yamaha card provide some more DSP power or would it just remain a seperate system?

I ask this because the Yamaha products only have a "consumer" -10dbV line level and is NOT suitable for profesional work. It's a shame they didn't take that extra step to provide proper analog ins and outs. The digital ins and outs are fine for pro use, so aren't the analog ones?

Just a small question!

Michael Adolphs

05-Apr-99

The card is available in Japan. I can get it for about 800 bucks. The total pitfall is the unbalanced I/Os and no option for Mic inputs, so you got to use expensive external mic pre-amps because you can't even use your balanced outs from your mixer. Although it's very nice to keep the mixing in the digital domain, you are dealing with totally unprofessional I/Os, defeating the purpose of clean digital audio because your sound quality is already reduced at the very source. On top of that, it's pretty annoying that those AX44's are occupying your drive bays. Why not an external I/O unit ?? As far as "They never release bugged or flawed products in my experience" I wonder how much experience you got with Yamaha stuff. Every single unit is usually full of bugs (look for example at discussions of the new EX5 or even the praised 02R, not even talking about complete failures like the TX16W). Even with their 2nd releases Yamaha doesn't cover all the problems. And forget about ever calling their customer support. Maybe you should wait until you actually have a unit and then try to rave again.

05-Apr-99

Yes,this card looks all´swell and dandy but what about the Soundscape Mixtreeme, with new "fastest ever" motorola chip and as far as I know greater compatabillety than the Yamaha.(regarding effects plug ins etc.)

Shouldn´t we all go for soundscape?

kilo

05-Apr-99

well, generally, i think it's tough to complain about the card not having a pro-quality mic pre-amp, and balanced connectors, when in the vast majority of cases, there are not features that'll sell it above it's projected audience, and it would of course add alot to the cost... check out the new cheap Adat... yupp,,,, un-balanced connectors, and for that you save 1000 over the standard adat, if you want clean quality input, use the s/pdif it should be a s/pdif standard isolated section... also, there will be an adat interface to comply with this popular platform connection with mixers etc...

anyways.... someone always likes to have a moan, but seriously... what can you get to match it at the price?..... again, if the units were ex-px in an external box, it'd add more to the cost, yet a pc full-tower case is cheap

bolla

05-Apr-99

Well,m soundscape`s mixtreeme is promised to be

cutting the whole edge of the Yamaha, and at an unheard of price. My distributor said below £600

And let`s face it: Soundscape is musiccards for big guys, behold tradition, and now beeing "affordable" it must be the one. It does all of what the Yamaha does, chips on card etc. and it`s chips are faster, it has a breakout box for d\a and possebilleties reaching beyond "Supersystems"

So the story is: Yamaha DSP is great, but the really really big fish is at the Soundscape camp and it`s called Mixtreeme.

well i wonder what exactly this ax-44

converter does ...convert analog input into digital...is that right?...can that be done using the card inputs only ,or you have to do it thru that unit???...another thing if i have a play back that is on a dat tape and i want to transfer it on my computer hard disk for editing

or mastering ,whatever the reson is......

does it have an optical i/o or how do i do that

if it doesn't.....???am i making any sense?

another question

i see people talking about that sounscape mixtreem

thing.....does anyone know what the price is for that baby?

and another thing to remember we can only have things we can afford.....and this yamaha dsp card seems to me like a pretty inexpensive deal if it takes you where you want..........

thanx for reading

i live in california

and the card cost 800$ here plus i think about 300 $ for that converter box ...im not sure if i need it at all......

i figure if you have a mixing board you may not need that converter,or im wrong......

thanx to kilo he does a great job keeping this forum together......good deal man..........

thanx peace.................

It looks very interesting, but the Soundscape Mixtreme card looks even better. For £449 you get 16 channels of 24-bit audio (so forget worrying about recording levels!). The input is digital, two 8-channel TDIF and an 8 channel 20-bit AD/DA converter is available for £449. Drivers for Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0 are provided and it should work with all the audio recording/editing packages. It comes with version 2 Mixer software and will work with Plug Ins developed by third parties. Oh yes and it has Midi In/Out/Thru.

I think that having external converters is a much better idea than having converters on the card. I think that you could use it to process audio recorded to hard disk with an existing soundcard.

The Yamaha card does have the advantage that you get the effects processors and dynamics processors included instead of having to buy Plug Ins.

Difficult choices lie ahead.

I can't believe that silly guy talking about CRAPPY EQs on the 02R !!!! What a joke. The same guy probably has at home 25 CDs from various artists, all recorded on a 02R and he love'em. Or maybe he could be deaf to say such dumb things. Anyway there seems to be no question about the fact that the DSP1624 is a killer product. Especially knowing the level of quality & reliability I've come to expect from them.

yep - i got one recently - amazing sound quality from ax44 box.a rather steep upgrade from a humble awe 64!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

although i have had to wait to upgrade from vst 3.6 to vst /24 in order to use the mixing and efx facilities - £150 on top - a small price to pay for a fully fledged 24 channel digital studio!

shipping next week say steinberg - yipeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

Where's the Soundscape Mixtreme section ?

It's much more professional than a card with 20 cables out the front of a PC !

Does anyone know if there is any software running under Linux that supports this (awesome) card?

Thanks for the great review of the Yama-Dsp card. After years of analog tape based work I'm finaly making the switch to hard disk. The pc is being built, VST will be installed now with your info I'll be using DSP, Thanks

Hey don't think that its all that cool and easy, its a pain in the ass to get Cubase VST\24 to run smothly.

i use it with vst 24 and the combination is excellent. the eq, dynamic processing and effects sound excellent, and aside from enabling busses in vst, there is no load on the cpu.

Question:
1. How to connect an XLR balanced audio input to DS2416 through AX44.

2. How to use a Phantom powered microphone with AX 44.
