Roland SP-808 Groove Sampler - Professional Remix-Oriented Phrase Sampler + 8 Track Hard Disc Audio Recorder. 16 assignable Pads, 64 Pad Banks, comfortable remix and resampling functions, built-in effects, D-Beam controller, 250MB Zip-drive for 122 Minute
Very good sampler, a bigger version of boss sp-202, which I also own. If you combine these two, you get some power going out. It's not only a sampler, it's much more to much to talk about. It's very accurate and easy to use. Not complicated like other equipment. I bought mine used for $600, and I think I got a deal. I still see them once in a while in pawn shops.
If you want to learn more about my music go visit me at my website.
NEED INFO ABOUT HOW 2 TRANFER SAMPLES FROM MY PC 2 SP808 HAVING A FORMAT DIFFERENT THAN WHAT SP808 HAVE?
JVUMANA, you cant do it. it has to be in sp 808 format otherwise when you put the disk in it will automatically ask you to format (as if you didnt already know that). did you not get a cd with the converter software on it?
This is exemple how Roland sometimes do stupid machines I owned one 2 years ago.
I had this piece of shit only 4 days.
NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My sampler in FAX Machine have more editing options and support all known files.
Dont fall on 808!!! This is not TR808.
I respect Roland and own around 15 Roland machines but this one is SHIT!!!
I've had my SP808 for two years and i use it nearly every day. I wouldn't expect much from
anyone involved in that shananananana song. there are many sides and uses for this piece, it takes time to discover them because of the usual Roland cryptic instructions or lack thereof. It's misleading to people who are really seeking an MPC type sampler as its more phrase oriented than individual hits/pads but the multitrack capabilities and hidden tricks are highly recommended (unless your goal is to have 'money as bill gates')
had mine for 3 years, good machine. May not have the a/d converters of some samplers but the editing options and effects are plenty to keep one going. I mainly use mine for live use as sound cards are so good these days, the p.c has replaced the sampler, to a certain extent
Hi,
just bought a used 808 Ex! However, it did not come with the manual or demo disk. I need some help in how to get a hold of these. If someone would like to send me a copy of their manual and demo disk I am willing to pay. Thanks.
TH
I HAVE A SP-808 EX, AND IS A MAGNIFIC MACHINE, BUT I LIKE TO BUY A EXPANCION BOARD WITH DIGITAL OUTPUT AND DIGITAL INPUT, I THINK IS OP-1.
PLEASE HELP ME.
Great for getting crazy sounds
and almost like an instrument in its controlability
very good live tool
but not many channels to work with, that why its great for creating sounds in a hands on way and then taking them over to the computer
YOU CAN PURCHASE THE MANUAL FROM ROLAND FOR 5 BUCKS
I HAD TO DO THE SAME
if you want a f2cking MPC get the MPC! this is a "phrase" sampler" man! look before you leap!..anyway i own one and it fits into my gear...would never sell it
In a Tips and Tricks post on the SP-808, one person said that they could do looping while sampling (have
one sound playing while sampling another) but I don't know how to do this without the SP turning off the
loop when the sampling button is pushed. Is there any way around this? I've also tried putting the sample
loop on 1 track and playing it but the same thing happened.
Is this possible without first recording it to a completely different machine?
Would also know how to purchase/get my hands on the original sample/demo disk that these came with.
And what is this conversion CD I have seen referenced?
All help GREATLY appreciated.
you can get the convertor from roland US website, i dont have the demo sample CD but I also wouldnt use anything on it so not a problem!
I got my sp808 when the first one came out (over 10 years... wow I'm old). first sampler I got, still have it.
they are pretty good for a one shot all in one box. definately has it's drawbacks in certain areas but excels
in others. good live and with a dj set up. we used it with a full band and would route a turn through it for
scratching etc. and tweak the effects in realtime. definately not anything like how the MPC works so do
your homework on both before you purchase. they are so cheap now though that it's almost worth it for
the effects and live application. sample disk=worthless. get the manual and start having fun!
I have used both the 808/808ex and I would have to say that it is an excellent piece of equipment for the dollar. It has drawbacks such as "busy drive errors" and I've only experienced this error when I've "flooded" the samples together and I crash the drive because of samplerates, crossed frequencies, etc. Other than that, the machine is a stellar performer. You can "ping pong" tracks for more space and recording/sample time.
I really like how Roland allowed the 808 owners to "upgrade" the drive capacity, not to mention the OS!!!
SOLID MOVE BY ROLAND!
Many new workstations/sampling sequencer/daw's of today have surpassed the 808 abilities but in the late 90's, the "SP" series made its mark in the sample market. Roland's MV 8000/8800 was the only answer to AKAI's MPC product, and I still think that Roland is ahead of the game, hands down!!
Here is a link to the Manual

Here it is 2010 and I'm just getting back in the game. Recently purchased an SP and I've got to say it does do what I expected it to do. Does anyone have equipment suggestions to run solid set-up with the SP? Anything from other samplers or MIDI equipment/drum machines synths or pc's. I'm a junglist and need ideas/suggestions on what other equipment will serve my needs. Thanks for all your time.
I have just purchased a Roland Sp808 for the hubby to play with. How
can do I hook it up to check, and make sure everything is working
properly before gifting?
I seem to have deleted the hip hop 1 and 2 as well as WW remix and heavy metal samples how do I get those back or is it possible to buy a new disk?
