I loooove this machine. When I bought mine, for some reason all the presets were wiped. I treated this as a blessing in disguise and got straight into sampling and loading samples from my own banks on there. The tubes give it a nice warmth, really brings new life into flat digital sounds. The Fx section is nice, especially this weird granular delay type effect, reverbs a bit crap but who doesnt have a ton of those to play with? Its great for electro, house, techno and electronica and I've taken it out DJing a couple of times, great for jamming and dropping sneaky fx. Arpeggios are fun if you get some synth sounds in there and you can make pretty complete trax with it if you use your noggin. The onboard beatslicer is also very usable if your loops are trimmed correctly. To get the best out of the machine you will need a smartmedia card and a card reader on your pc, theres a free file manager program available for download and it makes life much easier.

My only criticism (apart from the reverb) is an inability to record unquantised sequencer patterns so if you're making Hiphop or DnB for example, You may find it a bit stiff unless you use it with an external sequencer

I bought a used KORG ESX 1 for my son for his birthday. Does it need external speakers to be able to hear it? We have no manual with it and I am going to have to print it out so we know how to work it. I would appreciate any help as to extra stuff that may be needed so I can be sure that it is ready to be used.

yeah you can either wire it into a hi-fi amp via a spare input pair of sockets on the amp labelled something like 'cd or 'aux' (left & right), or use active monitors. in either case of course you need the connecting cable with the right connectors on each end
