Yamaha CS-30





Classic old yamaha 1970's analog mono synth from their first CS analog synth range

The Yamaha CS-30 manufactured between 1977 -1980 was the top of the range model in Yamahas original CS analog mono-synth series. Kind of like Yamaha's version of Korg's MS of the same era.


The CS range included the CS-5, CS-10, CS-15, CS-30 and CS-30L - The CS-5 & CS-10 were single oscillator with a single multi-mode (low-pass, band-pass or hi-pass) resonant Voltage Controlled Filter.


The CS-15 featured two VCO's and a dual multi-mode filter & was monophonic or Duo-phonic.This one the CS-30 also two VCO with 2 multimode filters, but also features ring modulation, Oscillator cross mod, a third envelope, more routing options & More LFO shapes, options for note triggering, sine sub osc. It also allows for the LFO to be controlled by any of the three envelopes. In addition, it allows for unusual routing of the signal through the filters and VCAs.

 

It also had a basic 8 note sequencer / arpeggiator built in.

Great synth, alot of routing capabilities
to compensate the 8dB filters, no memory
though which would have been very useful due the numbers of parameters you can
set.
Programming is far from self explanatory
and a bit confusing as this is my first
and only analog Yamaha (yup no ! I've
just been given a red CS01).
I have no manual and when I bought it I
took me about 20 minutes to succeed in
programming a basic sound from where I could test the functionnalities of
this beast as the owner didn't know how to use it except for 'funny sounds' !!
After few months I'm still learning, but
once you get used to it you spend hours
of fun tweaking the knobs while the
sequencer runs (no ext. sync for it).
It has 3 audio outputs : VCO1, VCO2
and VCO1+2 and a mixer, but only one 'global' CV/Gate (Hz/V and S-Trig).
It would be hard to give an exhaustive
list of functions/routing so don't ask,
if you find one at a decent price just
grab it !

I have to disagree with you saying that CS series are cheap.. I own a CS30, which is a CS15 with an added Sequencer.. and despite its High price (about 1000 Euros second hand) because of rarity, if you get the chance to find one in good shape and you're into acid, trance or hard techno, don't hesitate..It sounds dirty and acidic, dark and powerful. Take care of it though, it's fragile..it's vintage!!

an excellent monosynth, near-modular routing options. i agree that it´s not for beginners. a certain level of familiarity with the cs series helps, though. unfortunately, it´s plentiful knobs aren´t arranged near as logically as on the polyphonic cs series. i don´t see it that much as an instrument to actually play (a moog is laid out far more logically), but it´s far from impossible to have hours of modular fun, even if you don´t always have a firm grasp on how each parameter is routed. it does require more concentration though.
it´s high frequencies don´t sound as sweet and silky as they do on the cs-60. i´d describe at as squelchy, slightly nasal (it can approximate ms-20 sounds with ease), but with careful tweaking, you get nice shimmering, morphing soundscapes.

I have a cs30 for some time now . I dont want to compare it to anything else . if you like acid / strange evolving mad seqences . this is it . it bites like a t-rex :) I also like to send one of the osc into the external in then you hear it self osil.. feedback your cs30 greatings mischa ( holland )

I own a CS-10. got it for 200 euros.
Killer Synth. If I find a CS-30 I would be in dark-techno heaven.

This synth is like a very expessive synth. Really hard to get to grips with at first, but it all starts to make sense after a while.

I've never seen such a weird layout on a synth before, but I love it's warm sound, beautifull multi mode filters. It's the closest to a modular that a non modular synth can get, if you know what I mean. 2 osc each can be put through their own filter, which can be either lowpass, highpass or bandpass with a nice bitey but not screechy resonance. Perfect for those "I don't want to ound like a Moog" sounds :)

You have a choice of 3 adsr's with one of them being a very flexible adsr with intial attack level and intial level inputs. All of the adsr's can be routed to anything in a positive or negative value.

Ringmodulation and external audio into filter adds another slant on sound shaping. Also a sub osc for osc 2 can be added to beef up sounds, so it kindof sounds like a 3 osc synth. The adsr's are not the fastest in the world, but they don't need to be. They are great for deep solid bass, and lovely psytrance analog blurbles. I personally love that the filter is only 12db, it lets the synth sound breath.

The sequencer is the oddest thing about this synth. You can set it to control anything from the osc to the adsr's which in turn can be assigned to say filter or pulse width modulation etc. So you can get a lot of organic movement from it.

I find it excells in warm bass sounds, and also lead sounds with a totally different sound to Roland or Moog.

Street price is about £700 for a really good condition version.

Hello I'm writing from Italy (excuse me for my bad english).

I love acid and analog sound :) I have one CS30 in mint conditions and I love it! The first time I used it I find it a little bit complicated for his routing but it's an old analog synth :) The sound is amazing acid (I prefer play it than my tb303) and you can make a lotof strange sound. VCA are good and I love the LFO and modulation. The CS30 is the best on CS series if you find interesting the other model...try the CS30!
