Th MC-202 is a sequencer/synth unit a cheap controllable genuine Roland oldie, which can be clocked by midi-cv clock... it has plenty of realtime controllers to mess with, sorta like an SH-101 without the keys ?... well... sorta !

Ok.... I'm gonna add all the old vintage synths... not that i've used them all myself.. but i'm gonna dd the spec's then people can add comments based on real-life use.... so, as i had nothing to do today, i thought i'd start to add them as basic page templates... then add the spec's later....so...

The Roland MC-202... close sounding unit to the 303, or rather it can do 303 type stuff. It's got a built in sequencer which can be clocked to midi with the appropriate box, or if you have a synth like the Tee-Bee with a built-in clock converter... a versatile real-analog old Roland unit that can be picked up real cheap... please add your comments

Fun little analog synth that also syncs other x0x boxes

to it, as well as 2 CV outs (internal synth line plus

another. Even has a sub-osc!

Love it's filter too.

The MC-202 for me was (at first) a miniature version of my Juno 6.
It has basically the same functions, all realtime sliders, but with a different
sound so its not totally redundant.

It's a sweet little synth that can produce some amazing sounds when properly
used, great for all electronic music, with some good low end on the resonance
but not from the oscillators specifically. And it does some sweet portanmentos (which can't be played live, only seq'd)


Where did it lose marks? Well, it's a monosynth, (although there are 2 channels, one which plays through the synth and one which plays out to another via CV/Gate i.e. any x0x box or JP-1) which is too bad, but the sequencer it HELL. (apparently the 303 is worse, I don't know for sure)

I realize we're talking 1983, but the procedure is tedious, and there is only 1 song/track (which holds about 2600 notes) that can loop at any point.

It DOES have the DCB/Tape Sync, and the "Save to tape" feature which is somewhat redeeming. Why? 202 Hack. It's a Java program written by some guy that takes MIDI files, and converts them to the tape audio data which you play into the "load from tape" port... and BOOM! MIDI to 202 conversion. Even does special 303-like slides, which sound GREAT.

So, the 202 (a.k.a. the poor man's 303) is a great choice that produces some great sounds, but unless your sampling it there is quite a process to getting it to do what you want it to. If you see one, I think you should buy it. But that's because I've finally figured out how to use it.

Definatly and awesome trance machine. the lfo to pulse width with those leads really screams with some delay. The low end saw waveform also rips up most speakers.

I love the 202, well worth the $400 you can grab a used one for. It's like a 303, 'cept it requires a bit more work to get 303ish sounds out of it, whereas the 303 just sounds cool no matter what. I suppose that makes the 202 more versatile...also up to 2600(?) notes can be programmed into it, if you're really bored.

A quirky little box.

It can emulate a tb303 quite well but has the same voice architecture as an sh101 (minus the noise generator and adding lfo delay).

Does that big d&b sub-bass sound too.

The sequencer is great. Hard to use, but with perseverance it becomes easier and is capable of producing unique results (again, this is similar to the 303).

Yeah, the sequencer is HELL - this is THE most difficult thing to program EVER (the TB-303 is actually a bit simpler according to what I've read about it) - but well worth it for the sound ... very good for bass, and also excellently does hi-freq sounds too ... weird lil' feature is that the VCA can be set to a "gate" mode - here, the accent can be set to control only the filter and not the VCA - there are three (non-independent) oscillators: a square sub-osc, sawtooth and pulse ... 1 LFO which can modulate pitch, the PWM and the VCF - so this is capable of some very interesting and thick sounds ... filter self-oscillates unlike the 303's ... if you can't get a 303 this is defintely the next best thing IF you are willing to go through hell and a half to program it ... (And the manual will only serve to confuse you...) Warning: They're not very cheap anymore...

I have a problem with an MC-202 which uses the same Curtis chip as the SH-101 in it's VCO. >>>>>>>> It is stuck on square wave and also oscillating strangely.???
Just wondering if anyone has any info that would be helpfull to me.???
