it's not there STEINBERG CUBASE

STEINBERG CUBASE

Cubasis from Steinberg is the baby sister of Cubase...is a decent cheap sequencer with audio too, check it out....
The above image is a screenshot of Cubase Version 2.8... pretty much the last Cubase before audio was included as standard on version 3 I believe....So this page is about all the cubase as a midi programme, and not the newer versions...

There are many different versions of Cubase around. All current versions now come with audio as standard, and support the use of audio cards

(WARNING : Cubase does NOT support the DAL Card D, despite what it says in the brochures !! for versions below 3.5)

Cubase Audio also has 8 tracks of audio, but also supports systems such as Pro Tools, Session 8, and other multi-out hardware units.

If you're not using audio at all, go for the Atari 1040 & Cubase package. The current s/h price, is fixed (in London) at 150 quid. With this, you'll usually get a crack version of Cubase....Usually it's the famous KCS Crack, registered to Mike Hunter (geddit?!....say it fast).....Don't worry about the fact it's a crack.......This one is well stable, and crashes no more than an original.

If you're working on the PC, and you don't want audio, go for a cheap s/h version preferably 2.8, which is full colour, and is more stable than earlier versions.

This basic review is about Cubase's midi functions, and these are common to all versions and platforms with the exception of the Cubasis range, which scraps the Drum Map feature, (the best bit of Cubase to my mind)

Cubase is a 64 track midi sequencing programme, and in it's basic form is ideal for most dance music.......Now read on......

If you like to compose your drum parts by inputting notes manually into a drum editor, Cubase really scores in this area with it's Drum Editor.
Drum Edit in Cubase, I find to be the best drum editor, mainly due to the BOOT tool, which allows you to kick the drum notes in a given direction, back or forward in time by either fixed time rests, ( 8th 16th 32nd's ), or miniscule amounts.
This is great for just booting the notes around in a given direction to change the feel of for example a tambourine line over a basic beat.

Another great facility in Drum Edit is DRUM MAP, and it works like this:
The Drum Edit page has a horizontaly descending list in which you type your individual drum sounds. The notes are put into the edit grid, working across from each drum name.
So let's say you are puttin a kik drum in the first box in the list, followed by a snare, closed hat, open hat, and tambourine.
Next beside each name, you put in the note number that the sound in the module or sampler is fixed to. You can also specify a different note number to trigger the sound from. SO YOU HAVE IN NOTE, AND OUT NOTE. Now you go down the list setting the in and out notes for each drum sound. Now here's the trick........

Cubase stores the list starting with the first entry as C-2 (the bottom note of a keyboard), working upward. This means that your kikdrum plays as C1 for example, but if it is the first drum on the list, is stored as C-2 (first entry).

Here's a little diagram:

NOTE NAME IN NOTE OUT NOTE STORED/SAVED AS
KIK36/C136/C100/C-2
SNARE38/D138/D101/C#-2
CLOSED HAT44/F#146/G#102/D-2
TAM96/C696/C603/D#-2

Comprendez ?..............The beauty of this system, is this : Say you have made a drum track, in the drum editor with DRUM MAP switched on, then you get a sampler with all the drum sounds on the wrong note numbers for your sequence. Normally you would have to go into the sampler and reassign all the samples to the correct note numbers. With this system you just go into Drum Edit, and change the NOTE OUT numbers to match where the sounds are stored on the sampler. The drum pattern in Cubase re-routes the stored notes to the new note number destinations, and your drum pattern notes stay just where they were when you put them in.

Also in Drum Edit, you can go to a drum sound, choose a quantise value for that individual sound, and the using the BRUSH TOOL, just drag it across the grid leaving behaind a row of notes. This is great for say putting in a line of high-hat notes at every 16th note, or a cymbel crescendo with notes on every 64th. After the notes are on the grid, you can go along and edit the velocity of each note to give the pattern the correct feel. The BRUSH TOOL is available also in the Key Edit page as well, which makes it a snap to brush in 16th synth notes.

The ease of note movement, and editing in the Edit Windows, make the strong points for me for Cubase. Other programmes force you to manually grab a note with the cursor and drag it back or forward to it's desired position in time. This can be a bloody nightmare in patterns with a lot of short notes, like synth and drum lines.

Another good feature, is the GROUP TRACK, which allows to to create your patterns, say Bassline, Drumpattern, synth line; and group them together in GROUPS. You can then drag and arrange the GROUPS (of patterns) into the correct place in the song. This is easier than having to grab each instrument pattern of a song section, and move them all to the correct places. Also the GROUP PARTS take up less space on your screen. The downside is that GROUPS are not recognised in Midifiles.

As for the audio side of Cubase. People go on about it being the only real audio & midi system etc etc.....Crap !.....I don't like the audio side of Cubase, I found it fiddly, and not so quick to use. All that naming & re-naming soundfiles etc....Who needs it ?!!

OK.....There you have it , a good programme, but it falls down when it comes to ease of manually inputting controller data and the GM section is limited, for that function Cakewalk wins hands down every time, and of the programmes I know, is the best for that job.
The ideal situation would be to have Cubase and Cakewalk, and port the song between the two to take advantage of their best points, and use the better audio qualities of Cakewalk.

Now since this page was written, we have the various VST versions... VST being for the uninitiated, an updated version of Cubase, which includes audio tracks, (32 - 96 depending on version), and a concept.... The VST concept is to emulate a studio mixer & fx rack in software, and it succeeds very well....

Personaly, I'm dubious about VST's timing.... i've seen many un-usable installs.... it's a tough customer..... but if you get it working stabley, and if the timing is up to it, then it's a formidable sequencer & hard disk audio package that can be extended to add many upgrades and new items.... I'll get around to writing a seperate VST page at some point....

I am having problems with Cubase VST Update.

I cannot playback or edit any wav's in either VST or Cubase.

my system is as follows :

Cyrex 686 166 CPU.

32 MB Ram.

Quantum Fireball 2.1 Gb Harddisk , divided into two,one half (1.5Gb) is dedicated to music & games, of which 1.23Gb is free.

SB 16 bit p'n'p soundcard.

Windows 95. (as recommended by Herrn Steinberg himself)

1.

I already had Cubase 3.04 (Upgraded it to 3.05) & Wavelab lite (andDemo),which ran very smoothly (no problems with Audio or midi)

I recently bought VST & Update to Cubase 3.5 programme for Windows pc.

I followed the installation guide step by step, giving VST it's own file.

First i opened up VST and imported the Demo song (on the C.D.) and pressed play.(sounded like the local Hopscotch Team on the annual Beano)

The sound was jumping all the time on all of the Audio tracks.(midi tracks O.K.)

I muted all of the tracks accept the drums & Bass, this sounded O.K.but when i tried adding any more tracks, the playback was jumping again.

2.

I then turned the computer off and restarted it.

Opened up VST and tried to import some wav's that i already had.

You could see where the wave should be on the track but you couldn't see the actual waveform or hear the wave playing.

I tried importing a wave thru' the Audio pool, same result, You could see where the wave should be, but you couldn't see the actual waveform or hear the wave playing.

The problem is the same in Cubase.

I can work with waves in Wavelab, but I cannot use these waves in Cubase or CubaseVST.

so at the moment VST (virtually shit technology)

got any suggestions

Help

Does anyone know where I might find a Fostex driver for windows mme?

At the moment I use an old version of cubase (GS) that uses its own drivers supplied with software or windows mme drivers but not both together. I have been using this with a B16 and R8 for years now andi ts great.

My problem is that I have just bought a new 4 way midi interface ( as I have loads more midi devices now), that uses only mme driver like everything else these days, and I cant use itand my Fostex R8 together !

The cubase web site mentions that the cubase Fostex driver has been removed as there is a mme driver. I cant find it anywhere !...

Fostex & Steinburg have not answered me !!1

I am absolutely fed up to the back teeth with Steinberg and the arrogant way they (don't) support their product (especially Cubase Score VST). Their dongle is supposed to be totally transparent but isn't (it seems to disable bi-directional printing functions, making my otherwise wonderful HpDeskjet720C useless). Their answer : "go and buy yourself an extra printer port (at your own expense)", and I quote!

Steinberg is utterly paranoid about copy protection and serial numbers. You can't even download and install trivial updates, (which couldn't possibly work without a bona-fide original copy), unless you key in your name and serial number. This is all very well if the damn thing works for the genuine purchaser but it doesn't.

Why does Logic sell more than twice as many copies as Cubase Score? Because Cubase users are utterly pissed off with Steinberg's slow response (if any) to genuine e-mail technical enquiries, their arrogance towards existing customers desperate for decent support, and lastly because a product with enormous potential is still full of bugs and fundamental flaws more than a decade after it was first released.

I need some help, I've got a SoundBlaster 16, and I'm

curious if you can play back samples as well as doing

the MIDI stuff at the same time? I'm running this on a

if you have more than about 5 tracks started at the same

time you get a slight delay? Even on my system this

happens

The Cubase VST dongle disables my bi-directional printing. I have a Deskjet 720C linked to a scanner;without the Dongle in the printer port, scanning and printing are perfect. With the dongle Cubase works but I get error message confirming bi-directional communication is not working. Therefore the dongle is NOT transparent as promised by Steinberg, who have not responded to MANY emails. Does anyone have a solution please. Thanks

As for Cubase itself, at last it's beginning to perform reasonably. This has taken Steinberg nearly Ten Years to achieve! - I'm not impressed.

This may not be the right forum, but I'm having a heck of a time getting cubase to work properly. I have Cubase 3.0 and have recently upgraded to a new computer w/Windows '98 and a Soundblaster AWE64 Gold sound card. Cubase worked great on my older system (Windows 3.1 and Ensoniq Soundscape card).

Here's the problem - after about 5 minutes of playing my keyboard/controller, the sound "sticks" or creates a midi-loop. I have to shut power off to my keyboard and exit Cubase and then restart to eliminate the sound. But it happens over and over! Help, I'm losing my creativity?

Also, is there a web site where Cubase users can communicate these problems and answers?

Thanks!

Hi everybody!

I hope that someone will save me from this problem.

I 'm still using cubase after all these years because it is the best

(ah really??) and cakewalk sucks! (yes! really!).

I wanted to add guitare and other stuff to my composition and cool edit

pro is really great for that. By the way i sell my old 4 tracks tape

recorder tascam porta5 if anyone is interested :)

But the problem is that i would like to synchronise cubase and cool

together.

Someone told me about a module to add to cubase and use a virtual midi

port.

I don't know more.

Is there someone who can tell me which module to use? or what is the

solution?

thank u

I have Cubase XT nobody else seems to have heard of this but it works perfectly and never crashes, never.Locks up perfectly to other Midi sources.

sarge

20-Nov-99

Good to see i'm not the only other person using XT. Steinberg should realise that their cracked products are advertisments for their software when we can afford them. Trouble is their software (VST) is so buggy I would't want to buy it. VST 24 might be alright if your machine is up to it. Don't get me wrong VST is great if it works and XT is as stable as the the ST version. Okay the audio doesn't have any effects or eq and is only 8 tracks. If you can't get work done on just that then give up and go home. I know of people who paid the top price for VST when it came out and sufferred for it.

for those of you looking for a demo copy
this is cubase score 3.0 which is the next version after the version discussed above and still prior to the VST versions also discussed above
