OK, thats the standard blurb for the 'Orchestral', it is actualy a phenomenal bit of software for what it does, which is to provide quite realistic orchestral parts without resorting to loaidng large sample sets, so the plugin is actualy quite light in use. The instruments are devided into banks for the usual orchestral parts... Strings, Brass, Piano, Woodwinds etc. The unit is multi-timbrel with 16 channels, each of which can be assigned to a MIDI channel, and each of which has an EDIT sectionm which offers envelopes and much more. There is also an overall reverb which isnt very nice but is passable. The only drawback of this software is that it does not save your setup with the sequencer song which is very unusual for a VSTi... So you either have to save the setup using the Orchetral's built-in edit/save function and then load that song's edirol setup when you open the song, or better learn how to add-in programme changes and let your sequencer assign the required sounds when the tyrack starts to play.

Otherwise it's very good. I own Garritan personal orchestra and yet find myself using this again & again because it's so easy to use and doesn't have that aweful 'Modulation wheel' volume control thing which Garritan has.

Edirol Orchestral also has different setups for different ypes of classic music... You can configure it for setups like full orchestra, string quartet, baroque, string & woodwind quintet, marching band, etc, and each preset 'setup' arranges the instruments in the classic layout for pan & volume/distance etc and provides any tonal variations as well as the actual instument differences required for that type of classic setup. Ther is also a 'Preview' button for each setup which plays a well-known classical piece in the style of that setup.

All in all, a great plugin, shame they dont sort out the 'save with song' sissue. Sounds are good enuff in quality to use in professional film score work. We've used Orchestral in the Dancetech studio many times for film score work inc' award winning films with festival prizes such as Sundance Festival & Cairo Film Festival.

There is a serious bug in this product that the developer will not acknowledge, so it may be a long while before it is fixed. If you are using it as a DXi in Cakewalk Sonar, it will wreak havoc with your ability to mix if you make it the sample source for an existing MIDI track. Once the damage is done, you can't rectify it by removing the plug-in. Your output levels will be limited to the volume to which it was originally set. So you're stuck with whatever mix you had for the tracks before you assigned them to Orchestral HQ. Also, once you have installed and registered the software, it continues to ask you for the installation CD every couple of days to make sure you haven't stolen it -- as if anyone would want software this buggy!

How do you mean: "if you make it the sample source for an existing MIDI track" ?

surely you mean DESTINATION? - are you saying it somehow fixes the midi volume level of the track permanently?

I've never had a problem with this product as a VSTi, but admittedly I didnt use it as a DXi - I shall try it in sonar asap and see if I can see what you are talking about.

What's good fam... Ive been producing for year's now and im at pro level and Ediorl Orchestra is a great program. Im into Hip-hop instrumental's. But anyway, the thing that 1 person said about the bug that will keep all of the mixed level's permantly at there default so it is a very buggy software. But i think this is a site from Germany ( I could tell when i saw euro's lol ) So i have got the up-dated american version.
So Haha

Its an OK piece of software, brilliant for its size! but being a film composer, to be taken seriously by top directors, edirol wont cut it, but all in all for the lower up the ladder music maker, it would be excellent.

reasonable comment, but a top director (implying a top budget) would only accept a real recorded orchestra. For film score work where strings etc are not fully featured it is quite acceptable to use orchestral and we've done alot of score work using it (as well as garritan), one of the films even won an international film festival award, so the quality is good enuff for 'pad' type strings and horn work etc.

I think it's a great piece of software for the money. Prefer it to IK's Miroslav, but it is not clear how to save your presets...you HAVE to read the manual carefully to do this...so not the most logical or intuitive functionality wherreas other plugins are way easier to use. I also have this bizarre problem with sounds ocassionally just dropping out altogether, seems to happen when programming percussion parts, which means I then have to route all the MIDI outs so they don't affect each other...however should be able to get 16 instruments running at once without this happening so not too happy about that.
Summary. Value for money, good enough for compositional realization, budget scoring etc...but not so easy to operate.
