Roland TR-707





Came after the 808 & 909. These machines were Rolands first entry into the "Sounds like real drums" arena.....You might dispute this when you hear one, cos they're pretty cheezy.....However, for certain retro sound tracks like old soul, reggea or techno stuff, this is the machine.....Also was very popular for hi-life an stuff like that. I wouldn't recommend them tho, unless you really want that retro sound.
Roland entry into the 'real-drum' samples market..... followed shortly after the 909.... and was a top unit at the time..... it's got 16 drum samples..... 8 outs & stereo, and a nice fader for each sound/output...... usual TR style grid & button sequencer, but I've a feeling that unfortunatley, your dream-plans to sequence other midi-kit via the TR interface is scuppered as these TR units don't send out midi note data... only clock.... groan...shame.... ..... anyways.... a sound that once heard can be recognised any time...... Very retro......Here's the sounds....

Uhh, sorry Kilo yes the 707 does send note info out, it's a pain in the arse, but it can be done. Just to keep it short, yes the 707 is a poor man's 909. The hats are awfully close and the clap is dead on with the 909. The snares are a little blah, and the bass drum is a punchy quarter second thonk -- not really useable at all. But in conjunction with a 808 this box is the bomb, nothing beats the hi hats and clap, look past the weak snares and bass drum and you've got a very cheap and handy drum machine.

We use the TR707 as a bridge to sync all of my midi gear to clock a Jupiter 6. The Jupiter will not clock the same with straight midi clock it works best with the 707's clock out going to the Jupiter. A great way to sync old analog gear to a midi sequencer or other stronger drum boxes.

i got my 707 quite cheap, $100. I think its about as usefull as drum machines in this price range can be. when dry, the sounds suck, but run it through some filters, distortion, and a ring mod and the sounds are useable.

Just picked one up cheap. The mulitouts are nice, now i just gotta get some cheap stomp boxes to run the outs through. Only prob is the power jack is a little loose, and the power adapter is falling apart. Anyone know what the true polarity is on the power jack. And also has anyone ripped open one of these to fix a power jack? I'm thinking of trying to fix it, but if it's too much of a hassle i'll just let it be.

The TR 707 is the original Chicago House drum machine. Check out all those late '80's Marshall Jefferson or Larry Heard productions. As for the original acid house record, Phuture's "Acid Tracks". That was just a TB303 synced to a 707, although I think the 727's Agogo sounds are in there too.

Shocked that site administrator is so clueless. The TR-707 DOES send note data and IS a nice quick MIDI drum pattern generator for an external sequencer & sampler. It also has Roland's best LCD display for this purpose. Use the TR-707's MIDI transmit Mode 2. Edit velocities if necessary in the target sequencer. Set your sampler to play samples through to end with short note-on's. Try it with your Akai S5000 loaded full of fine 808/909 samples. You'll see. The nice usable samples are a bonus.

Let me clarify: The 707 will NOT transmit midi when in PATTERN EDIT mode.
This makes it virtually useless for live midi applications, what I believe Kilo was referring to. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd be very happy. However the manual says "The Key message transmitting mode is available only while in the Track Play mode." blech

What the 707 is good for however, is triggering analog tone modules with all those seperate outs. I used to trigger my TAMA TS305 with it, and someday will maybe use it to trigger my 808 franken-clone.

The 707 will transmit midi note out but only in song mode. when in song play mode, hold down shift and midi channel and pres instrument select. Then do this again but press last step . Nothing will visually change on the 707 to tell you it's now putting out midi but if you sequence a song into it, you should experience anoying digital infomation that will only hinder the making of analogue music.

This machine can easily be haked to modulate the digital sounds and get a better performance.

that's kinda why i mean it's no good as a tool to create/trigger your sampler etc, cos you cant actualy compose with it and hear the triggered sounds as you create, only with a finished pattern, which is not really the same. It's a good box in it's own right tho.

Guys, I'm desperately looking for a Roland TR-707 manual; electronic form would be awesome, so I could print it out on my PC. I did some consulting work for a dude who had some old school gear that was 'to die for'. Among the heap, was a spotless TR-707 -sans- docs. I also need manual / docs. for the Yamaha DX7, Yamaha DX1000 Digital Reverb and Yamaha P2250 Power Amplifier.. Anybody have any ideas for me or sources on the net??? I have tons of rig gear to trade and swap with other gearheads, so send me an email and let's talk!

I have a TR-707 and had to get a plug. I bought an adapter. I know it's a 12 v but is it a (-) tip or a (+) tip. I was afraid of ruining it before I even got started. I'm a drumist and wanted to use it for both production and creating no beat "strings." Ant ufo you have would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Tr 707 since 1989 and i think
it's (with the LinnDrums) the best drum machine of anytimes!
I think the sounds of the 707 is very similar to the Linn's sounds and is wrong to make a paragon with the Tr 909!

if the power plug from your third party makes bad contact, or you have to keep it in a certain angle to make contact, you need another plug ! i thought the connector at the 707 was bad, but i just got another adapter with a bigger plug, and it fits great and doesnt fall off ! i use 300mA 12V negative centre, plus on the outside.

I've had my TR-707 since 1988, and I came across a TR-707 librarian about two years later. It's the same one floating around on some of the other websites. Funny thing I was looking through some old disks the other day and I came across the TR-707 librarian again but to my surprise I have the original pascal source included. I will put it up on my website in a zip format for anyone who would like to use/see it. It's actually very straight forward.

the TR707 is one of the two TR units i have (the other is a TR505 which is great too and that i still use in my liveset for hihat and rimshot) what i especially love in TR is that the sequencer is not perfectly "on the beat" but just a little time before or after ... and it gives a funky groove!!!! ... One more thing is that i manage to send midi control with the TR (send it to KORG ER1) unlike the admin says above... anyway you can find these boxes for about 50euros so if you want great old style sequencing and natural sound... just buy it !! :)

Hi,

Just wanted to say that the TR-707 DOES put out Midi but only in track (song) playback mode. You can also use it to sync between Midi and Roland's Sync24 provided the 707 is the master (i.e it will put out both clocks but will not convert incoming clocks).

If you want x0x programming for Midi use, the Korg ER1 electribe does it better and is actually cheaper secondhand (UK, March 2004)!

tr 707 was my first drum-machine...
when i started in 1997 with an atari 1040st and a digitalsynth(k11)
it was so easy to program and i made my
first experiences with the good old step/runnin light sequencing.
from the sounds i only used the hhats,rim and snare in the mix an the toms
to trigger my good old poly 800....
back in the dayz.....
now in my own studio the 707 sstill have its place.
it sits near to my tama techstar 500
(analog trigger-module)
and once in a while i get back to it,
when my computer with all the cool plug-ins
and intruments crashed again...
tired of the parameter and programm jungles
doin some sessions with it and my mpc 2000 xl
if only the bassdrum of this machine would have more punch
and power.......

Please someone answer to BOTH questions if you can...

1. Time ago I found a website about tr 707 tonal modifications... now I can't find it anymore... anyone know what I'm talking about?

2. And one more thing; I think that the tr707 could be easily modified to send midi messages ALL THE TIME!!! In all modes, be it pattern write, pattern play or else.
I think it could be done by installing a new midi interface (and let the old midi implementation to rest) such as the Doepfer POCKET ELECTRONICS DIY kit. It features 16 connections for buttons, switches, potentiometers or anything else... and sends out midi data. The only thing I don't know is where to attach the connections of the Doepfer P.Electonics. Can anyone help? I think it would be best to attach the connections to the sound outputting connections on the chips - but maybe there are alternatives... the audio outs also must produce some voltage... but that seems a little too stupid to me...

P.S.: Please, if I'm talking bullshit, I'm sorry, I am no engineer, not a percent... Please, if you know anything about electronics, check out www.doepfer.de (check the DIY products, POCKET ELECTRONICS) and let the public know HOW TO CONNECT it to the TR707. Thanks.

the 707 is volume sensitive when triggered by an external source.
i have always used reverbs and external eq to enhance the sounds of the bass drum
and the cymbals. I also run it with an old alesis drum machine to help with changing the tuning of the drums. My 707 lives & works in 2005.

my name is chris Johnson... I have a Tama Techstar ts 305 and I have no idea what this thing is worth. I am a musician and songwriter so it may be of more value to just keep it and learn how to use it, but it looks at least 20 years old and may have some monetary value... I would much rather sell it and buy some recording equipment or another guitar... I found your post on dance-tech site and wondered if you could help me out with any advice as it appears you also own one...
any help is greatly appreciated!

This is a superb drum machine for many styles and can be used as a programmer for external devices by taking its instrument outputs and feeding them thru a trigger to midi convertor such as the simmons adt unit or thier tmi. These units appear for next to nothing on ebay and i have used them to overcome the fact that the tr707 does not send midi note data.

The 707 is the heart of my home studio. It syncs sequencers, runs arpeggio patterns, triggers sounds, and bridges old and new gear. Oh yeah, it also has a few cool sounds of its own.

I have my 707 set-up to trigger a Pearl DRX-1 analogue drum brain. I use the 707's clap and hat sounds and the on-board sequencer. I use the bass and snare sounds on the DRX-1. They can sound like a 909, 808 or they can be very Simmons-like. The DRX-1 has 8 user programmable drum kits and the ability to edit a variety of parameters for each sound so in the end it's a lot like having a TR-909 with MIDI, Sync, and 8 user banks.

The TR-707 is a very useful and reliable piece of gear!
