it's not there Roland SH-2000

Roland SH-2000

It's a cheap nasty preset analog with only basic controls, and a filter sweep... but sounds nice if it's cheap... more of a home keyboard, but still VERY effective... check it !
Yes !!.... Here's another old bargain blast from the past.... The Roland SH-2000.... One of the few affordable old Roland analog machines..... I just got this synth & the Korg S-700 from the classifieds here at Dance-Tech !!, so hey people... The Classifieds DO sell !!.... This cost me £ 100 from Sandy up in Nottingham.... Not a well known 'Analog' classic with yer typical 'Classic' price tag, but a real bargain at the price I paid !!..... I was also gonna get an MC-202 microcomposer, but when we checked out the kit up in Leicestershire, the car journey seemed to have anihilated the resonance control on the old MC, so I'm waiting to see if it gets fixed, after which it will be bought & aded to the list.

The SH-2000 is a true analog monosynth from around the 70's era I guess, but if anyone knows more on that score let me know... It's kinda a strange beast... Like a cross between an organ & a synth what with all those hammond-like dip switches and all... but the preset sounds can be twiddled with & filtered, and amongst the presets there are some real-cool bass sounds etc to be had... This is an earlier synth than stuff like the TB or TR series, so there's no sync facilities at all... it's straight to tape, sampler or hard disk for this baby.

Dunno if you can see from the piccie, but all the dip switches to select the preset sounds are laid out across the bottom below the keyboard, and the controls are all mounted on a small upper-facing panel to the left of the keys....

The SH-2000 has 30 preset dip switches in total.....To the left of these, are 4 extra dippers, controlling Sustain, Hold & Repeat......with one extra to set the filter to manual control !!!...(heh heh).......Thats the baby.........and once you've grabbed a sound, you can tweak it up from the controller section... The presets have names like: 'Bassoon', 'Fuzz Guitar', & 'Frogman'... which er... don't really tell you much about the sounds, unless a Bassoon suddenly mutated into some kinda sound like a rampant bull in full mating-season flight... if you get my drift !!.... But this unit gets you sounds like the Bootsy/Parliament Bass sound, that nice solid Hip-Hop bassline sound, and lots more stuff from absses to widdly filter stuff... great!

On the control section you have Resonance & Cutoff naturally !!.... also, there is Modulation & Mod' Rate... Portamento switch & speed slider... a pitch tuner... volume & 3 octave transpose switch....

All the extra controls pertain to the keyboards sensitivity....Yes !!... This oldie is actually pressure sensitive !!... So, you get stuff like Vibrato, Pitch bend, &... 'Wow'.... er.... like kinda adds a growl to it.

Finally, there is an overall sensitivity level control for these functions... and as they say... Th-th-that's all folks !!!

So... I'll obviously find out new things about this unit over the next week.... such as....The dip switches are coloured 3 different colours... hmmmm.... suspicious.... maybe this allows the blending of sounds with correspondingly coloured dipper... who knows....but the Ra3 files will be added in the next few days... so.... enjoy !!

I've got the SH-1000. It's pretty cool too.....

This is a useful performance machine, it's been providing me with great Goa lead lines when run through distortion and gated. Beware that there are 2 versions, with the early one having a moog-ladder filter which is top, I suspect the later ones have a weak 2-pole filter.

Did anyone else notice that the RA file is not working.

I kinda wanted to know what this thing sounds like.

Kilo

yup..... I noticed, that's just cos I've been to busy & forgot.....whoops..... I get it done....

Truly dreadful early analogue synth (Roland's second ever, fact fans) that only has any value as a novel rarity. Save up and get something else.

I just picked up one of these things for $250 Canadian.

All I can say is that I absolutely love. It's my

favorite piece of gear. You can get some really cool

sounds from it, and it's great for bass.

Highly recommended. If you see one get it.

I've heard about getting it retro-fitted for cv-gate.

I saw some place that offered it.

If anyone has got theirs fitted or knows of some where

either in the States or Canada that can do it, please

e-mail me.

Dammet, that's an SH-1000 in the picture.

I know it cuz I just sold mine.

Yes it sounds great, but it's the ugliest

synth I ever seen.

I found my SH-2000 on the dump...

Erverything worked fine, until the VCO went to

nirvana. Has anyone got a circuit diagram ?

I just saw a picture of Norman Cook with one of these... So check it, people are using this cheap-o that are relatively big.. (And are good, in my opinion, I like FBS...)

I traded a pair of velvet pants for one of these, and I will never miss those pants. I run mine through an ART Nightbass processor, and I do beleive it has saved me thousands of dollars in unnessesary synths (tho I also aquired a Moog poly6 in trade for some design work). It sounds fantastic. Screw internal sync, I've got a sampler for that. The filtering is badass.

Definately a true lo-fi Beast. Can be CV / gate converted but it's tuning scale isn't exactly 1v/oct - more like 1.2v/oct (don't quote that). So you'll need a midi CV converter with a widely adjustable scale or some other clever doobry. I've used it with a Kenton 2 channel midi-CV unit, but couldn't get it to stay in tune from one octave to the next - 13 note octave anyone? Scarey old school drum and bass "wooarp" bass lines R-US!!

Whats cooler the sh-09 or sh-1000?

Peter Spiess

I recently bought this machine, and I have to admit that

it really can compete with the more known Synths people

tend to collect like precious diamonds... (the TB for

example) The most striking disadvantage is the lack of

CV/Gate. But it seems that ANALOG SOLUTIONS offer a

modifying kit that should make CV possible...

Refering to the age of the machine (built ´76 first I

think) it is a pretty cool instrument and the filters

could even make the "clarinet" preset sound interesting !

(I´ll order this one I think (it´s about 34pounds) and

write again as soon as I´ve tested it)

I got mine from and old lady who lived out in the boonies. Paid 200$ canadian and feel it was more than worth it.

I don't know much about synths but this one rocks!

I have both an SH 1000 + an SH 2000.
Great pieces of analogue synths.
excellent for creating weird analogue noises and basslines to use in trance and goa music.
Analogue lovers keep up the good work.
