Casio CZ-5000

Bringer of the original Kevin Saunderson Reese bass sound, the CZ-5000 was a synthesiser also used & loved by Derick May.

The CZ-5000 was Casio's top end machine before the CZ-1 delivering 8 note polyphony via 16 oscillators. It has a great little on-board sequencer/arpeggiator in it & it offers a form of multi-timbrel functionality via its keyboard split feature.... If you see one in the secondhand ads check 'em out, cos they are cool underated synths.

Derrick May said of the CZ-5000 in a 1990 interview: "I'm into keyboards that everyone else slags off....I tell you one keyboard I used to use that had some phenomenal bass sounds: The Casio CZ5000...I had some fierce bass sounds on that which I used on some tracks that I never released"

Kevin Saunderson also used the CZ-5000 to create the original Reese bass sound!

Basically these CZ Phase Distortion synths have an interesting sound generation system and the 5000 had 8-stage envelopes via 2 oscillators. Nice detune functions, ring/md etc...

These are the sorta synths that if you can grab real cheap are full of waves & you can get creative... multi-timbrel too.... also features Ring Modulation/noise/portamento and glide.

If you want to get into classic Casio CZ sounds but don't have the hardware you can use Plugin Boutique's VirtualCZ Synth available here - This plugin can load and use actual Casio CZ patches so can also act as a librarian software for the physical hardware units: https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/4-Synth/1158-VirtualCZ

some beautiful and wicked sounds can be had, but in the long run, programming is very unintuitive. you just
doggedly have to push thru an unergonomic system of up- and -down buttons. i already had two, sold one,
regretted it, bought a new one... that seems to be their lot in life, judging by how often they crop u

hmm well one of my least favourite synths ..

i do agree about the bassline sounds it can make thou .. since its a bit like a DX7 but a little more lo-fi sounding . you can actually get some weird sounds out of it

its well built but i did have some problems with some of the sliders and buttons ..
but nothing some contact cleaner cant fix..

full midi spec .. you should be able to find one cheap around 100-200 usd
i sold mine .. cause i never used it ..

i have a dx-7 so if i want those type of bass sounds i usually went with that

how ever ... for what u pay for it .. its worth adding ..

good at clav sounds .. bells , dx type bass sounds .. and weird growly fm sounding patches

terribile at smooth strings , pads .. unless u like glassy thin pads..

I need an owners manual in good condition. Left mine at formally co-owned studio - No one seems to know what happened to it.
If you know how, or where I can get one, please contact me.

Thanks,

Ronn

There's a listing on ebay for a cz starter set. Comes with manuals for ALL cz models. Hope this helps!

Also... looking for a cz 1000 or 3000 in parts condition. Could make do with just a couple of keys, but would prefer the whole instrument. Thanks.

The CZ-1 was the top of the line, and this keyboard does not have an arpeggiator, it has a sequencer.

Does NOT have an arpeggiator - wicked or otherwise - the original poster must have been thinking of something else. Only the very basic sequencer. Nothing (yet) I have found here that can't be done with better fidelity on pro synths, but enjoyable to use none the less. Programming is fiddly but straighforward enough providing all the (crude action) buttons are working - I have some issues with mine. Maybe taking apart & cleaning will fix. Very possibly some dry joins too as some parameters do not come up when they should.

Find it strangely likeable despite its shortcomings - it's good at evolving drones & colliding random Doppler things as well as glassy bell tones so that's what I'm currently using it for.

Addendum - 2 weeks on - just cautiously going inside & cleaning all the switches etc fixed all issues - big thumbs up for old tech engineering.

This synth is a real joy to program which means more music playing time!

Getting some wonderful timbres out of it with familiarity - excels at bells, ambient pads & gnarly basses.

Try bypassing the on-board ring mod & chorus - use outboard instead. I have put it thru chorus & phaser pedals & an EH Ring Thing - with excellent results. One more star added!
