I've used early versions of this and found it to be quite good. Plenty of variety preset-wise; you get presets with titles which un-subtley suggest the sound to dial up the sound of Brian May or whoever.... and of course lots of presets for various types of amp from clean to hi-gain which can be combined with various cabinet/mic options.

Once your amp/cab/mic-position is chosen you can then add fx courtesy of a virtual fx-rack which includes all the usual suspects such as reverb, delay, eq, mod-effects etc, and I these can be controlled via midi.

If you use this with a very low latency soundcard (5ms or less) I found you can play in realtime thru the Amplitube plugin without any real noticable issues for timing, which thus allows you to plugin raw to the PC input and record THRU the Amplitube but the recorded sound of course is for a clean guitar (as plugged in before the Amplitube effect is added). This means of course you can then choose a completely different preset amp/cab setup to apply to the recorded guitar after recording has taken place.

You have to give prop's to Amplitube - The first commonly available s/w guitar-amp/cab afaik.
