Roland D50

A classic old skool digital synth from Roland
The well famous Roland D50, the synth that smacked home with 'samploid' sample-attack synthesis technology... this is the synth that launched a thousand house piano riff's, but does all sorts of great gritty 80's sounds, sample & saw mixed pizz sounds... like this get's contemporary etc blending hard fast filter rounded pizz attacks with warbley sawtooth waves etc and the joystick.. morphing axis based stuff like filters etc.... user comments please

Very misrepresented synth. A true classic in my eyes, with crisp, icy cold digital textures. Maybe not one for dance buffs, but great for soundtracks. "Soundtrack" and "Digital Native Dance" started here!! The Rack mount D550 is occasionally found, but try to avoid as it's MIDI port is quite a bit slower than the keyboard, and it doesn't look half as sexy!!

Bought this about a year ago to get back into keyboard playing and eventually looking at making dance music. The original presets are of course very 80s/digital sounding and I didn't do much with it. Got a Supernova recently and the D50 has been sitting at the back of the room not even plugged in. When I bought the Novation i told the sales guy I had a D50, he did too and he said the patches on the net are amazing, and I must look for some......For some reason I looked for some patches on the net today and boy was I surprised. The D50 is AWESOME at sounding like an old analogue synth, Prophet/Jup/Moog Bass etc..... I'd go as far as saying that the Supernova sounds 'thin' compared to some of the patches I found for the D50. OK it's monotimbral but if you want an analogue lead sound, it's here.....it's back in the mix now.

Vlado, have you tried emailing Roland? Or even the excellent 'lugnuts' user group at yahoo groups?

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lugnuts/

check those folk out, there are many many people that have the d50 there.
I you want to buy D50 parts/expansions check out www.ebay.de (the germans sell their stuff at relatively low prices, compared to the rest of Europe)

I bought a D-50 the display scrambles sometimes. If I turn it off and then back on again it might clear or not. The display seems to work or not. The keyboard works fine.
The D above middle C has lost it's velocity sensitivity. It is at 127 all the time. Any Ideas?
If anyone can help please E-mail me
Thanks Don

I've been using my old man's D50 next to my North Lead 3 - they make a perfect team! The D50's got a real fat sound about it, it even got some filters the NL doesn't (lol!) and besides that, I also use it outside of the studio; the D50 als goes great for backgroundmusic.
The price is a laughter!

Use it for floating, vibrating pads in the background, use the chorus as a pannerr and edit the wonderful fat filters live! I use it all time! Juno 106, D50 and JD800 - they are all classic, easy to find (relatively) and superb instruments for ambient, trance and electronica...!

I just got a D50. Today is June 8 2008. It cost me around
$500 + shipping from eBay.

I am amazed, it is brand new, the original owner never
touched or kept it just fine. It came with the original manuals
wich are very basic. I bought the musitronic expansion to
make it multitimbral. Actually the best thing about the
expansion is adding 2 more memory banks because the
D50 comes with only 64 patches. I do not believe I am
gonna use the multitimbrity much because I only have 8
note of polifony.

But I love the sounds and I can tell I can get a lot from it. Is
very easy to use specially after using a Roland JV-90 :s

I got the PG-1000 programer as well, it is on the way.

I believe is gonna be my baby. I was just playing the
Orinoco Flow pizzicatos and my girlfriend understood what
the keyboard is about. Another friend of mine came over my
place and though it was brand new, I told him it was 20
years old!

is a very very nice keyboard specially if you find the famous
sounds of those famous songs and play them back for your
friends. =)

I have a Roland D50 with a Patch Memory Data Rom Card (PN-D50-00). I'm the original owner and it's never been on-the-road, so in good shape. Soft case included. I don't use it, so willing to sell it. Make me an offer but don't waste my time. I'm located in the Ottawa region of Canada. You pay for shipping.

I have a D50 that powers up fine plays fine and puts out sound but the audio outputs are very noisy like white noise and the patches are faint sounding? Does anyone know what this problem might be? should I replace the battery? or could it be something more serious?
thank you to all out there for taking the time to read this.

Nick, I've just aquired a D50 with the exact same problem, and I've managed to isolate it to the Chorus unit. You can test this for yourself by choosing any of the noisy patches, then editting the Upper and Lower elements and turning off the Chorus under the Common area of each. Set the Depth parameter to zero to turn it off. I haven't diagnosed the chorus hardware yet and can't offer a complete fix, but in the interim, if you're patient enough to do this with each patch, you will get back a working D50 minus Chorus.Rob M

Correction to Chorus problem diagnosis - reduce the chorus Balance parameter to zero.

I still have my Roland D-50 and the PG1000 both fully working.
wouldn't sell it, this is a keeper!
Didn't like programming without the PG1000 so I bought one.
Thereafter, programming is so much simpler using midi and sliders.
(well worth getting if you have and plan on keeping your D-50)
only downside is the mono-timbral midi but, retrofits are available for multi-timbral upgrades.
The D-50 still amazes me with it's pads and atmospheric sounds
a timeless masterpiece being Roland's first digital keyboard to compete and beat the DX7.
Hell, this still looks good today with a much better build quality than modern day plastic synthesizers.

Someone just donated a D-50 to my church. The thing looks like it was left outside for a couple years. I am not kidding. I took the bottom cover off and there is rust and mold in it. It is so sad. It powers on but plays no sound. No characters are displayed were words should be, making me think it cant read the patches. Does anyone have any ideas? I personally own several Roland products and would love to get this baby running.
