Yamaha CS2X

Cs2X - a popular synth for dance styles from Yamaha.
After their huge succes with the blue CS1x yamaha have decided to cash in for a second time on the same formula with an updated version of the 'Big Blue'. On the outside the machine looks the same as the CS1x or the AN1x except for two extra controller buttons and a new purple-ish silver shade, which actually looks kinda cool.

The knobs are fluorescent dark blue or something. I heard this was only the first series and that the later versions have regular coloured blue knobs. The keyboard has been given extra weight I think with a metal plate in the bottom so this must be yamaha's idea of weighted keys. (I think they do that to make it 'feel' more durable, more high-quality). The keys etc. do not look nor feel that sturdy but are comfortabe to play. In the middle of all the buttons and controls there's a nice little backlit (!) LCD screen, which is very clear. Unfortunately the viewing angle is rather limited. But looks aren't everything that's new of course. Yamaha have used the AWM 2 technology at the heart of this synth. Which means digital sample play back of voices and lots of parameters to tweak. Lets first look into some of the stats and compare them to the CS1x whenever they're different, otherwise it's not stated.

Yamaha have considerably improved the sound of the machine, more multitimbrality which is especially good when you have this machine at the basis of you set-up or even as you only synth (sound source) they have also seriously improved the number of samples and their quality a bit. Besides the regular XG crap which I think takes about 4 Meg they have included some 12 Meg of dance sounds. This includes many of today' s sounds (mostly dance oriented, which I think is a good thing) and also a 909 drum kit, short vocal phrases and many short drum loops etc. The sounds are all very good and clear (yamaha synths always seem to sound a bit brighter then Roland, maybe a bit more up front) especially the performance patches. The drums are maybe not the best I've ever heard, but there are plenty of em and with a bit of tweaking they're okay I guess.

Also included are 3-fx which really let you sound come alive, the only drawback is that the variation sound can only be used on the performance patch when you're in performance mode. Unfortunately this also means that you can use only one performance at a time, this was a major drawback on the CS1X and still is one on the CS2X. When you use this synth as a lead synth, or as a 'supporting' synth within a bigger set-up this doesn't really matter. But when you want to use it as a multitimbral instrument this limits you a bit. You can use the material voices though when it's in performance mode, using midi LSB & MSB command, just like on the CS1X. Performances use 1-4 material voices so you need as many channels accordingly to emulate them. The performance ALLWAYS uses up midi-channels 1-4 even when only one material voice is needed. In the end this means that you do have multitimbral dance sounds, you just can't use the variation effect on the channel 5-16, only on the real performance patch. There does seem to be a bit of strange voice stealing going when you play a lot of drums (still way less then 64) using the distortion effect. Some notes 'hang' or when you play a bass and a snare together they don't sound the same as when you play em seperately. This has probably to do with the fx-algoritm used or with the processing capabilities. First sounds are "mixed" and then they are distorted or something.

The controls are very easy to get into, although editing with a dedicated patch editor/librarian is of cource even easier. The controls are pretty good for live (on the fly) twiddling and tweaking. One very cool thing is the ability to save to setting configurations in 2 scenes which can be 'recalled' at the touch of a button or even morphed in between using the modulation wheel. Totally awesome! I've even found out that you can use the controls for other synths as well, since all the controls send out midi-data and are fully programmable (assignable to any control change nr.) This is very, very handy. I could control my EWS64-XL's filter cut off and resonance by turning the buttons on my yammy. It's like having a mini-phat-boy. (slim-boy?, fat-baby?)

So who needs this keyboard? Well if you're on a very tight budget I'd recommend you a second hand CS1X or maybe even yamaha's DJX, which supposedly boosts a lot of sounds from the CS1X and even some of the CS2X and even lets you sample. I think if you already own a CS1X or something simular this is not that much of an improvement. But still this synth kicks as, if you are looking for a good midrange-synth this is the choice for you. Either as a master keyboard and multitimbral sound source or as a great lead-synth within a larger set-up. You could us this keyboard with a sampler or a sound card and make complete productions on it, I guess. The EQ function certainly aids you in mixing you different sounds together. The sounds are great, fresh and really up to date and you can edit all the parameters extensively either on the synth itself or using CS2X or XG editing software on your computer. It's sounds can always be used in any dance project and the thing is just sooo much fun to play around with. This is really the synth to play and experiment with. Don't forget, it looks good too, either in you bed-room or in your own studio.

i was kinda disappointed when i noticed the preset performances were identical with the user performances, unlike in the cs1x. fortunately it enables you to create many own sounds without overwriting the old ones..

I tried to use it with the excellent XG gold editor for pc but unfortunately my vertsion had no support for the cs2x yet. (just general xg) Also the qs300 (2 element tho instead of 4) voices that DO work with the DB50XG WON'T with this synth. Bummer.

I just found out the XG voices are the same as those on the MU90, just not FX tho (I think mu90 has more)

I just bought one a month ago. Must say I'm pretty happy with it. I love the performance patches, they fill up a mix on their own and are extremely catchy.

3 things I hate about the synth:
1> It might be me, but I can't get to use the Performace sound bank on more than 4 channels (they DON'T have to be ch1-4, but you can't assign sounds from the performance bank to more than 4 channels in MULTI mode.

2> HOPELESS drum voices.

3> The lack of a Roland-style 'Slicer' which works like a noise gate being triggered by a drumkit. I heard it on the JX-309, amazing!

Just bought one - Love it. With a bit of patience you can create some pretty scary, squeely analogue sounds. But also it's capable of some lovely 'breathy' soft pads. I have only had it 2 days and havn't even got round to MIDI'ing it up to Cubase yet... should be fun.

djandy, you can't select the performance voice at all in multi (xg) mode. You can select all the voices you want in performance mode (both xg and performance material voices)... Just not on the for midichannels your performance patch is using (usually 1-4). The drums are allways available in both modes.

Anybody interested in setting up a site dedicated to this machine (we could put up some patches, songs , tips and tricks...)

Has anyone else downloaded the 'Tune 'em Up' program from the Yamaha web site. It makes tinkering with the CS2X ALOT easier than those fiddly buttons.

Had the cs2x for 2 months now.
Great machine.
You guys that want more than 1 performance on the cs2x are probably not thinking about having only 1 dedicated multi-fx processor (other 2 are reverb and chorus only). Therefore the other performance patches would have to use the first ones effects. I Read in this review that you can't use effects for parts 5-16 in perf. mode isn't true.
You can assing chorus& reverb send levels for each part, just can't use the variation effect . Also a really
neat feature on the cs2x is to program the 2 band eq for each channel or part.
This way you can make your drums kick and your bass shake the house or the stadium if you wish. You can't access it from the panel you have to use sysex from an external sequencer or sysex software. I am creating a huge cs2x studioware panel for cakewalk that modifies a ton of settings and record to to tracks in realtime and so on. I will post it somewhere when I'm done with it. Right now it can change the eq for each part volume pan reverb &chorus send you can choose any reverb, chorus or variation type you want anywhere in the song.
you guys will like it.

anyway great machine, BTW there are some very decent pianos on there. I am programming some myself which are amazing too. This is not a techno/hardcore/dance/rave/hiphop machine it can do some classical, new age and some rock (not much) but Hey for the price.

Too bad it has no aftertouch.

This is a cool synth but it really comes into it own when used as a controller. So many parameters are available from the front panel and the rest are not too far away. I have owned both cs1x and 2x and the difference is worth selling the 1x.

Having owned a CS1x for quite some time ( and loving it ! ), I just had to upgrade to the 2x. It's a great machine and very good value at £469.00 in the UK. The editor software on the Yamaha website makes it easy to use and sounds great with my MS2000 & Electribe EA-1.
Anyone looking for a great synth should give it a very close look - not much comes close for the price.

I owned the CS1X, traded it and bought the CS2X the next day. Good for pads and ok for lead type sounds. The midi is excellent, you can do ANYTHING from a sequencer. I also really like the assignable knobs. I use it as my primary controller. On the down side I dont feel that you have enough controll over the pcm samples, most of the amp-envelopes are pre-set and you cant tweak them enough, and the all the sounds seem like they are just hap-hazardly thrown into the different banks in no real order (I really prefer the roland style). There are alot of real usable pre-sets and its backwards compatable with the CS1X so if you really want all the CS1X sounds you can just do a sysex dump from the 1x then load it into the 2x and you will have all the sounds. Pretty good rompler if your just looking to make one sound at a time.

In XG mode you can (1 reverb, 1 choris and 1 multifx which you can apply to each channel/xg-instrument. In Performancemode it's all for the 4 voices of the performance.

The sound I like the most on my CS2x has to be preset010(sqiChordal) in performance_1 mode. It sounds like something that Angelic or Chicane would use.(Sound just as good!!!!!!!) Useing the arpeggiator set to "Orbit", and playing with the LPH cutoff with this sound->->->->sounds->g-r-e-a-t!!!

There are many good lead sound to.(Nice phat ones.)

The CS2x is very good for dance music projects and most of the sound can be used for any kind of electronic music production. There are many instrument sounds to.

The only disapointment is the multitimbrality in preformance mode and the kick drums could have been a bit more phat. But at this price...

The people at Yamaha put some thought into who was going to be useing the CS2x. A top product from a top brand at the right price. Hard to fault!!!(except for the multitimbrality)

PS - The XG edit software for the CS2x makes life easy.

The CS2x is a beautiful synth. I originally bought it cause I wanted to get a synth, and it was about the most inexpensive thing out there, didn't really know what I was buying at all and just wanted something. Well, after extensive research on the thing and many hours of song writing, I'm convinced that for the money you'll spend (I paid $589 brand new), you won't find anything with more breathtaking, inspiring, mindblowing sounds. It's definately not something you'll want as the centerpiece of a rig if you're a serious musician. It's definately a lead synth, although if you get stuck writing a song, it has a ton of presets that'll inspire and get the creative juices flowing so to speak. All in all I love it to death. If you wanna hear the CS2x in action, check out my songs "The Flame and the Void" and "Tranceid: The Elevation" on my page at Ampcast.

I bought a CS2X and was only happy
with it for a few months. It's MIDI
implementation and polyphony are
great, but the limit of 1 performance
and 12 XG (read beefier general
midi) sounds severely limits the
usefulness of this synth. It only has 2
main outs, which tend to get crunchy
after a few sounds are going at
once. If you can live without the
keyboard portion of a synth and have
a few extra dollars I would suggest
the EMU Proteus, which has a great
MIDI implementation, multiple outs
and use of up to 16 instruments that
sound as good or better than the
CS2X's performance sounds. I just
bought one to replace my CS2X and
haven't looked back. It was not the
'dance machine' Yamaha billed it as
either.

Bought it 12/2000 and like it very much. Although sparse documentation for the beginner (which I am) you can learn a lot by trial and error. Nice sounds. Drums could be a bit better.

Tell me please, is qs300 voices(4-part) do work in non-perfomance mode?

bastiaan

13-Jul-01

Well. No they don't...if you mean the performances, since they use material voices (samples) which are only accesible in perf. mode... Still it would theoretically be possible to recreate the qs300 since the XG stuff is all the same...there was a trick to do this on the DB50XG (2 part performances, which could be layered into 4 or even more parts )and I've allways wondered if there is a trick to do the same on the cs2x or 1x....anybody?

This would be very cool, since there should be lots of performances on the web from the ravers-babe....

Hi,

I've the following problem:

I have a composition with several tracks (in Cakewalk) and in one of them I selected the bank Preset Performance 1, and let's say the patch 01 (Ministry). When I want to play this track I hear nothing, while the other tracks give no problem (when no Performance 1 or 2 is selected there).

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

The CS2X is the perfect starter synth, it has a wide variety of sounds and samples, and is all you need to get your band or career going. I purchased one about a year ago, and still have it, it was fantastic, it provided what i needed to give the band that edge. It is my personal choice if you are starting your band up, and for the money is a total bargain. Having got the band further I have progressed to a Yamaha Motif 8 which is one of the greatest synths in the world I would say, but thats just my opinion. But either way the CS2X is a great synthesizer.
