Anyone know where I can get an owners manual for the dbx 166? I just bought one on ebay without one.

This is a pretty good compressor. I was the engineer on most of the Blaze
produced dance records of the 1980's at Stardust Recording Studio in NJ. We had
one of these. It worked well for certain percussion. Frequently during mixdown I'd
use one side of it for the kick and the other side for snare. For tracking live drums
the Symetrix 501 was better (in my opinion) but this was nice during mixdown.

It also worked well for background vocals, especially stereo tracks.

If you can still find a copy of R U Lonely by Jocelyn Brown the background vocals
were processed through the 166.

I've had this for a long time, but only recently started putting it
in between my Yamaha Motif Synth and a Fender
Acoustasonic Jr. amp at live gigs. It really makes the synth
sound 100 times better, more like it's being recorded. Maybe
it's a better line-level match with the guitar amp or something
like that, but I highly recommend the dbx 166 for this type of
application to a live keyboardist with a guitar amp who wants
his synth to sound like it does in the studio, at a live gig,
onstage. (The Fender Acoustasonic amp has 2 8"s and a
tweeter, and is designed for particularly flat response, warmth,
without that 'guitary' peak around 1 or 2 k often associated
with live amps.- the 166 still makes a difference!)

I just got two of these. I mix a lot of rock tunes these days and I uses these boxes on busses. They do a wonderful job. The compression is smooth, never crackly or erratic... it truly responds to the material very well.

I also make old school disco... It sounds very nice when pushed into the pumping zone. And the side-chain is spot on too... digs just the right little whole, quick enough.

I love them!

The universe gifted me one of these when I most needed it. I now use it to duck my basses and make my
tracks BOUNCE! If you make electronic music, pump this b!^@# to the max!
