Whenever I record digital audio to my AWE64, the recording has crackles and pops. This isn't due to overload (it even does it at low volumes) and it happens on both the MIC IN and LINE IN ports. The weird thing is when I monitor it through the soundcard as it records, it sounds fine. I am inclined to think then, that the problem is in the ADC (analog-digital converter...correct acronym?) Any suggestions?

When recording through a channel, close all others.
Make sure that the rec vol is set correcly.
Try to use digital out (to a minidisk, dat, etc.) so
you can be sure its the adc
to see if it's realy the AD converter.
When you monitor the incoming sound it does not go
throug the adc and the dac, it simply goes through the audio mixer.

I did that. I closed all channels but LINE IN and set the volume to an okay setting. No dice; still crackles like a bitch.

This could be due to thermal recalibration of the hard disk - every so often it has to recalibrate due to its changing temperature causing crackling etc... Well thats what Ive put my intermitent cracks down to anyway.

by the way, these aren't intermittent cracks...they're full-fledged, annoying ass pops that occur about 20 times a second...

The answer to this one is simple..... The Soundblaster range are only 3/4 duplex, which means that it will record and playback at the same time but, you will hear the playback at 8 bit while recording, but then once you've recorded, it will playback at 16 bit.

OK

OK I got a AWE64 - I use cakewalk. When you record and then playback with the input still set to record it crackles like a bitch. When the source is set back to Midi the recorded wave plays fine.

This is a well know problem. After you have recorded make sure that the Mixer setting for record on Wave is disabled and the Wave will play back without crackles. At least it does on mine. If you are using something like cakewalk dont forget to set the pan positions for the left and right audio channels for playback after you have recorded. Not doing this also causes crackles.
