Drumboxes For Dance & Home Studio - An Overview

Welcome to drumboxes information. Here we will attempt to offer some guidance & advice for beginners who may be confused by the new world of home & studio recording & dance music making.

To start with, these are the top-selling drumboxes last month at Thomann superstore, one of the largest retailers in Europe - This shortlist gives you some pointers as to what products are popular in this category at today's date.

alesis - sr18

behringer - rd-8

elektron - analog rytm mkii

elektron - digitakt

elektron - model:cycles

elektron - model:samples

roland - tr-8s

teenage engineering - po-12 rhythm

teenage engineering - po-20 arcade

teenage engineering - po-33 k.o.

There isnt an overview actually... cos this page is new and the old site just had a drumbox list.... so check the boxes out from the 'Classics' list on the right until we can think of something meaningful to say about drumboxes.. but for drums, synths, and all dance music (or any music for that matter)... bassies, guitarists etc, we recommend that you learn to play drums.

LEARN TO PLAY DRUMS !!

Nothing is going to improve your tracks more... NOTHING!... and you'll probably have alot of good times, and meet some cool people too!

Just get yer butt out of the house, and go and join a percussion workshop... learn to play Djembe, conga, bongos; any hand drums.

Because all the rhythms from the drums, bass, synths etc is just drum patterns... sometimes tho, with melody... comprendez ?!!!

Add your general drumbox comments
or nominate an unlisted drumbox here!
For listed drumboxes, please leave your comments or review on the actual drumbox-unit's item page - You can browse all drumboxes in the GEAR section - if you have an actual question, try asking on the forums.

Just buy a good sampler. You can buy any drum cd and load it into it. If you buy a scsi cd rom drive, then you don't have to sample anything, you just load. I use this method, and found out that it's better than any "groovebox" or computer program. Plus, you can play different drum sounds any time.

DO NOT let me repeat myself please, DO NOT buy the roland 303 groovebox, it is a cheap piece of crap, 90% of all the sounds including ALL, im stressing that again, ALLLLLLLLLLLL drum sounds. This box really sucks. It has locked up on me numerous times, due to lack of internal memory. There is no other way of saving data unless you have another 303 and you do a midi data dump to that box, but for that much money you can have professional equipment. There is NOTHING more important than drums in your mix, it is what mooves your body. Remember that, and please take all of my friendly advice. Anyone want to buy my 303? har har har, email me.

phil. i dont own one but read a lot of reviews of it and the jomox sounds like it kicks ass. real analouge drums and snares , hats + others are sampled. it has better midi implementation and allows way more control of paramaters and although only has 3 polyphony u can interchange sounds. ie.a diff kick, snare, hat sound could be sequenced to go off ever beat which opens way more possibilities than on 909 for drum beats.

basically it emulates 909 v well but also allows u to do a lot more aswell. i would love to have one for live performance (has like 24 knobs to twiddle!!!)

and most importantly it has a huge fat ananlouge sound (not digital modelling, REAL ANALOUGE) which is main reason to buy a piece of equip luke this, instead using kicks sampled into a sampler.

So DJ Shadow said once that it doesn't matter what you use it's how you use it. I've made a song using this program called Acid DJ. I like what I did mixing a riff from Grateful Dead's "China Cat" with a bass (& sitar) line from Alice Coltrane. But creating a drum track by sampling an old Jungle Brother's track and a Mr. Dibbs break record just isn't sounding right to me. I'm interested if there's software available with which I can program beats/samples in a more intricate way than just layering loops. I've heard of programs called Hammerhead and Fruit Loops and in my search to find them I was directed to this web site. I'd really appreciate it if someone would clue me in as to what's on the market for people who don't want to waste money on the Roland 303 or some other bullshit aimed to hype up wannabe DJs with an array of played out samples banging at 100mph. Is hip hop going to be reduced to a playstation game?

I just finished reading these comments here, and all I have to say is that you future music producers need a lot more initiative. You all sound very much alike. You all want to copy some other artist, want to be told what equipment to buy, you might as well ask what song to write?! Try learning for yourself about what you like, and work on that instead.

Everybody on this list seems to not
want to try to learn there equipment.
What do you want, some techno
"god" to sit down and show you every
aspect? Read the manual, get a
subscription to computer music, and
join user groups and ask specific
questions like how to program a midi
synced LFO sweep!!!!! Or maybe this
is a way to ween out all the wannabe
"ChOkenfolds"
