What's a good budget friendly Amp simulator? You know.. that box you plug the guitar in and connect to your mixer?

Hi,

1. OK all in 1 little signal processors:

Pod - various types do a search
Line6

2. get an amp with a speaker simluated output.

3. get a mic and go into the pc with that...

4. get a midi pickup for your guitar.. eg roland GK-2A

Have a read of the "recording guitar" thread. The V-amp seems ok. It doesn't sound exactly like a Marshall stack but it sounds ok, the effects (even the reverb) are good enough for guitar. It's not as solidly made as the Line6 Pod but it's a lot cheaper. It's easy to use and great fun. And when you get bored of doing Hendrix impressions you can use it for mangling vocal samples too.

if you are using plugins (is that what you are recommending psy? like amp farm?) you still shouldn't plug straight into the computer without at least a DI - the impedance mismatch will kill you (or at least sound bad

yeah, you still need a preamp of some sort if you're gonna use a plugin - on pc, ik multimedia amplitube is good, steinberg warp is cpu hungry and a bit limited.

yeah, pod if you can strech out a bit, v-amp if you cant, and amplitube for s/w (and a very low latency soundcard). thats pretty much the best options imho.

i use a yamaha a3000 (amp sim, chorus etc) comes with a free sampler too...

There are three things that define a flow of electrons through a system. Voltage (or simply, how many units), Amperage (or how fast they're moving) and Impedance (how much the medium they're flowing through is resisting their flow). Any mismatch when connecting electronic systems will result in a change in operating level and tone quality. Guitar electronics output what is called a Hi-Z signal (Z=impedance), and the line-level inputs on your soundcard and mixer are Lo-Z. If you plug a Hi-Z signal into a Lo-Z input, you're in for some wimpy-ass signals, and not nearly enough gain. A DI (Direct Injection) box will match impedance for ya. This is how guitarists "go direct" into a console or tape machine.
