I was informed by a highly technical boffin mate yesterday, that he had wrapped his soundcard in tin-foil, and acheived a noticable lowering of noise..... you have to be careful not to short out the tracks etc........ dunno how he did it...... also, he strongly advised placing the audio card as far as possible away from the video card..... again this can reduce noise......

well, I started thinking, wether it was possible to utilise a short ribbon cable and connectors to isolate the soundcard in a box outside the pc completely..... ??..... then you could experiment with earth straps on the card to PC chassis etc..... surely this would work, as the cable would also carry the power supply too...... I'd have though it would work, as long as the cable was hort..... but maybe not......I know the Lynex sampler design ran into problems when they tried to implement the memory add on module that was connected by ribbon cable....there were timing problems....... any thoughts ??

actually, I was thinking that you could keep the foil away from the card with bluetac peices strategically positioned, or wrap it in packing tape first..... my mate wrapped all his IDE cables in packing tape, then tin kitchen foil, then more packing tape, and got less noise..... that was in a rack sampler module......

if you take the soundcard out of your computer it doesn't make any noise, or if you hit it with a hammer(kids dont try this) lots of times, being carefull not to hit the computer, it then doesn't make any noise. These are a few things i found out.

What sort of soundcards are we talking about here anyway? Wouldn't it be easier just to get a new card? In my computer I've got an AWE64 and a Tropez plus and I don't have any noise problems. Well, maybe if ya turn the amp level way up, but at an average listening there's no noise. These cards aren't expensive either, and they both work out a similar price.... My old AWE32 had a bit of noise though, and I've actually still got this card aswell, maybe I could wrap it in some foil and throw it in the BBQ.....It'd probably go well with sausages..

I've also though of having the soundcard located outside the PC via a short cable, but lacked the know how. Has anyone tried it? It sounds like a bloody good idea.
Another, less technologically problematic option, is to locate the power supply (and the fan)outside the PC. I know on my system, the fan causes the most inteferance.

I was wondering if the pulse-beats that come from my computer (through a pinnacle card into an amp) are natural. It's a bit annoying actually. AND, if ya throw away yer soundcard in the deep dark woods, does it make any sounds then when ya boot up yer computer? aha!
