This is the system I am considering upgrading to:

Gigabyte GA-8PE800 ULTRA MoBo

Intel Pentium 4 / 2.53GHz 533MHz CPU

CORSAIR XMS 512MB 32MX8 PC-2700C2PT memory

LSI Logic ULTRA 160 SCSI Host Adapter PCI Card

AHANIX EX110 (BLACK) MID-TOWER PC CASE

WD WESTERN DIGITAL 40GB 8MB 7200RPM (audio) DRIVE

Maxtor 120GB 8MB 7200RPM (system) Drive

ENERMAX EG365P-VE(FMA). 350W Power supply

MATROX G550 Dual Head Video Card

ANTEC 80mm 4 pin Sleeve Bearing Fan.

I'll use my monitors (14 & 15 inch) from my 486 and P1 computers which will finally be scrapped.

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on these components for building a PC DAW around?

mick, i just stuck linux on a dual boot with winxp.

not good really. linux seemed very slow, like 15 seconds to load mozilla (web browser) and even a minute at least to dir my windows network drives. seems slow as constipation really.

& most of the software i was interested in was available (free) for windows anyway.

maybe it's ok for running a server or something but ...

anyone else got any thoughts? & should i have been running linux as a text thing instead of graphic? i was running redhat 9 btw.

i used to use redhat dual-booting with win98 a while back (can't remember the version) but it was blindingly fast, especially considering the PC it was running on was decidedly average.

i installed redhat 9 on a dual boot with windows xp last week.

slow as . took ages to boot up. took 20 seconds to just start mozilla. took minutes to read a directory over a network after taking minutes to ask me for a password that doesn't exist. i was using a graphical front end, dunno if it makes a difference.

i un-installed redhat 9 this week.

(and , was that a pain in the arse)
