The HMRC (inland revenue) have to be one of the most incompetant government bodies going. I mean ALL government run bodies seem to be fuckwits. But they take the biscuit. My wife is a payroll manager, the poor girl has to deal with the twats on a daily basis.
I had a massive spat with them years and years ago. They wanted me to fill in a self assesment form every year, even though I was on PAYE and employed by a normal company. The only reason they could give was because I was in the 40% tax bracket. Fucksakes. what a crock.
I refused to fill them in, over a 3 year period I built up late filing charges of £300. I had written to them to dispute the charges on several occasions.
Finally, after about 4 years, a letter lands on the mat. Its from the inland revenue. "You do not need to fill in self assesment forms as you are on PAYE, therefore all late filing charges will be dropped. We are also compensating you for the extreme delay it has taken to respond to your letter. Please find enclosed a cheque for £300"
Stupid cunts.

lol
it's not just the tax office that is wank, dvla has gone down the shitter too - they told me last january (2009) i was being prosecuted for not declaring SORN
I told them the vehicle was scrapped (in january 2008) and notification sent the previous january (2008)
the problem is - and this is occuring across ALL gov't agencies - the GOVT department sends the gumph off to private baliliffs really quick - these bailiffs then write to you on letter headed paper of the department, so you are tricked into assuming you're dealing with the govt department, but you are not, you are dealing from that point with bailiffs who deliberately withold information to secure a debt on you.
still 2 years later i am waiting for confirmation of my vehicle being scrapped in 2008. Some of the conversations with their staff were utterly surreal.

The annoying thing is, its completely and utterly possible to have a fully integrated government I.T network that would reduce the levels of fuck ups. With systems that talked to other systems so that there was never a communications error. Police departments talking to other police departments, tax offices talking to other tax offices, the DVLA talking directly with police computers...etc..
The private sector manage it ok without problems. Companies like Thompson Reuters have been managing a fully integrated global real time data network for decades.
So why cant our useless fucking government do it ? (regardless of who is in power at the time)

to which they always reply "oh we have that"
they dont, they are still flinging around actions by emails - which of course only the sender and recipient can see or refer to - and think they have gone all future hi-tech
and why? simple - because everything is run by f*cking 'marketting' people
their idea of affirmitive action is to crerate a nice glossy pamphlet telling everyone how good everything is

You guys think government is bad? Here's a story for you. I worked for one of the top 5 wall street
firms for 7 1/2 years as a computer graphics specialist. My last couple of years there I was asked to
create the graphics for rather large signs that were placed in frames in the elevators every week.
Senior vice presidents of the firm fed me the information to put into the signs and the CEO himself
signed off on many of them. Each and every sign displayed positive growth via graphs, charts, and
quotes from publications like Forbes Capitalist Tool, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and many
others. Every sign every week told a great story of how well the firm was doing. Imagine my surprise
when not only did the firm file for bankruptcy but not much later it was exposed as having had a 40/1
debt to asset ratio meaning for every dollar it had in assets it had 40 dollars in debt. That makes
anything governmental look like a shining example of human brilliance. At least people can vote
public officials in and out of office.
