I'm looking to buy a new drum machine. Specially one that can handle nice trance snare sounds and claps. I'm not after the standard 909 shit. It has to be one that has a lot of control over the sound. Some say get a Jomox and others a Korg Electribe. I'm looking for some good advice. All help is welcome.

No flame war for sure man. You actually did the right thing. Tried before you buy and trusted you ears. The only way really. How did you like the kick on the xbase, as you don't mention it. I actually like the snare, it makes nice tension build ups going nuts with the xsnap and decay. I'm also curious of the Er-1, might get one to complement (unless I can psyche my friend into lending me his 808

I must say that kick on the Xbase was one of it stronger features, but to be honest I wasn't really crazy about the snare. I couldn't get more than a 909 snare out of it (good for drum-rolls though) The ER can do those and beyond and that is what I was looking for. Plus it can also do spacey and really wierd shit too, which is a real bonus. I would surely give it a try and it doesn't cost that much

I've tried the ER-1, and it is a phat machine. It's
very analogue feeling, and it kicks the pants off
sampled drums like the Mc-303.

Has anyone tried the Navation DrumStation? I know alot
of trance artists use it, but I haven't tried it yet,
myself. I've sort of had it in mind as my dream drum
machine, because there's alot of control.

For the record, I use the Mc-303 and sampled hits
scavenged from records (and no one has noticed yet!) I
think overall, I make do, but I want more control, like
the sound of open hihats closing, and cutoff.

there aint no cutoff on the d/station. to be honest compared the the jomox airbass it looks a bit dated.. although it has got all the controls.. but you won't use like 95% of em during a track anyway. and I'm a real tweaker.

Is there a web address where I can check out the
airbase? Thanks. (Local music store sucks. Synth guy
just tries to sell me pirated sample CDs and warez when
I go in, instead of doing his job, which would be to
help me find the gear I want and sell it to me

do a search in the main section and this for some info.. it's been discussed quite a bit and some usefull info is buried there.

it aint got the controls of the drumstation though.. but you have a lot more things you can do.. it's pretty new so up to date whereas the d/station is 3 or 4 years old.

yeah, but trust me, sampler.. cos you can get anything froma the hardest techno or industrial sounds to garage & rnb kits & loops galore, plus there is no style of dance i can think of that cant benefit from a sam.. sorry,... smapler being added as a second reason in itself... i'd go for a 'drumsound synth' second always cos you are restricted to analog style sounds, however if thats the pallette you need go for it

I have a drumstation and it rocks. The only thing is sometimes the kick sounds umm.. to upfront...if that makes sense...but I think that is just that I'm mixing it in wrong...dunno...can some explain to me more about how to control it with midi? The manual really doesn't explain this to well. Thanx!

there is maps on the novation site for various sequencer... you mean to control the parameters of the drums?

this is it with the dstation, if you want to use it without sampling it and messing with the sounds that way you need it to have it's own dedicated compressor/fx unit/decent eq preferably parametric. I bought an old two channel 7 band eq to use with it from cash converters which helped.
