Hey guys,
I was wondering what type of microphone I would need to get a decent recording at low volume (ie. somewhat talking 5m away). I have a cheapo radio mic which is fine if you speak straight into it but doesn't cut it at low levels (boosting the gain too much gives lots of noise). It would be great to get a radio mic like this if possible but i dont have much money to spend, so what are my options?
Thanks dudes

if it's distance, you want what's called a 'shotgun' mic.. narrow directional field.

been ages, but last time i priced them, $400ish..

lol - hmm... um thing is even VERY directional mic's like a PZM will pickup sounds in a room ok, but there will be that sense of it being 'in a room' so the room's acoustics are alot to do with it.

why do you ask this any ways me!? - tryin' to bug the wife?

Hehe, I thought someone would be suspicous. Im not trying to bug someone (thats just a side benefit), I just wanted to record lectures and stuff. I figure I can get the mic to within a few metres of the lecturer. Surely there are cheap mics that will do this - my IPAQ has a built in mic which picks up sound pretty well (and im guessing it doesn't have a very expensive mic in it). In fact I've been recording lectures with my IPAQ up to now but would prefer to be doing it via a lappy running cubase which would be soo nice cause i could basically edit on the spot. Surely these are around and in radio form (otherwise I have to sit up the front and cant play games and stuff.... oh, did i say that aloud?)

ah, well, the thing is, those portable recorder have built in compression which evens out sounds so that near sounds are almost as loud as further sounds, if you used a mic & the lappy to record i'm not sure there'd be any advantage unless it was something specialist. (shotgun)

you want a mic with an omnidirectional pickup pattern. Most cheap mics are mimicking a Shure SM57 or 58 with a cardioid pickup (which means it partially cancels out sounds from the rear and sides). This limits its useable range.

Don't have any specific models for you, but make sure whatever you get has an omni pickup pattern.

that way you can record the audience too...which should be no problem since they're very quietly taking notes.
