Just felt compelled to warn my fellow dance tech people about this Keyfax controller the Phat.Boy.

I bought one when they came out a few months ago....number 787 according to serial.

Anyway....I haven't used it much yet and...it's already falling apart!!

The knobs are of cheap quality and basically bits of their insides are already coming out, making them really loose. Then they don't output the full range (0..127) of controller values they are supposed to.

So beware...maybe save for the Peavey 1600 instead.

Peavey 1600x rocks. Last night I used it to control Vaz and I tell you it was unreal.

Woah! Just in time. I was going to get one this weekend. Whats the 1600?

I think I'm going to get the Yamaha AN1X synth instead and use that as a controller, is this just as good as the phatboy (for controlling)?

Depends what you want to control.
The AN1x has 8 knobs assignable to any controller.
The Phatboy has 13 knobs which in MIDI controller mode send out controllers 1..13, you can't assign them.
This is OK for softsynths that let you assing the controllers to be whatever you want (Rebirth, Generator) but not for more general use unless you can do some sort of controller remapping.

If you wanna control XG or GS gear, the Phatboy is more specialised to that task and will use certain NRPNs specific to these formats.

AFAIK The Peavey can be assigned to send whatever MIDI messages you want ...controllers, sysex strings, NRPNs..
check details on the Peavey site.

Yes they still make them to my knowledge.

the an1x has 8 knobs AND a two way ribbon controller and pitch-bend and mod wheel - all assignable - that makes 12 controller outputs....

and unlike the fat boy you get a little synth tacked on to your controllers....

i can't believe that they're so cheap now.

Plus you get a nice arpeggiator and a little step sequencer that you can record out over midi.

OK forgot to mention the wheels and the ribbon.
I have a CS1x and a JP8K as well as the falling-apart fatty so I can send lots of controllers....a Peavey would still be a great addition to the setup tho.
