Im an old lurker here and need some advice...

I need some phones with a true linear response and that are comfortable. I have decent monitors but I want to be able to check my mixes on these. ive been recommended AKG, Sony and Senheiser but i dont know which models of each.

Could you please tell me the exact model numbers/names i should look out for and any other useful details you care to mention?

I live on a remote island in the med where nothing is available but will be in london in the next few days, so any info would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance

I use Sony MDR-V600

response is amazing, doesnt seem hyped (altho I still would really never mess with EQ etc in phones, just levels really...)

theyre an older model, replaced by the MDR-V900, but the 900s sound muddy to me

as far as comfort goes, theyre awesome

the industry standard, or one of them, is the AKG K240m

both can be found on ebay for far less than retail

AKG K240m's for me... I love 'em... they sound great, and wear for hours without the usual headache. Only prob is that they are open backed, so they have a lot of sound bleed, not good for tracking vocals but they are otherwise damned fine.

Sennheiser H2270. Good clean sound, closed back, do a fairly good job keeping the outside out!

hey.

i've got them akg240's too. very comfortable and they seem to give a bit of "space" to the sound. the only problems is that i found it hard to do bass instruments with it. you can hear the character of the bass, but not really the "meat" of it. of course it's something you could just learn to get used to.

there's a model of the akgs with enhanced bass for sticking on a bassist or drummer's head. anyway, any of those 3 brands at about 100US$ are decent. I use my sony's if they're gonna be anywhere near an open mic.

^^ yeah, MDR-7506 is really recomendable. i've seen them used in studios.
sound pretty flat, but i think they werent particularly loud if i remember correctly?

i use Sennheiser HD265 linear, but i dunno if theymake them any more.
punchy as hell and you could wear them on a building site and still hear nothing from outside.
