I've heard a lot of what i think is vocoder, but i've never been really sure of what it sounds like. Here are some examples...

The hi-pitched singing behind the main growling in Kevorkian Death Cycle's "Lifter"
and pretty much most of the vocals on X Marks the Pedwalk's "drawback" (the album)

please tell me if these are what a vocoder sounds like. i would really appriciate it. thanks.

"California" by 2-pac and Dr.Dre doesn't use a vocoder. It's a talk-box, and it's being done by Roger Troutman (from Roger&Zapp).....he did it all back in 'tha day. The same set-up is used by Teddy Riley on some of his "Blackstreet" tracks. He used to use a vocoder, on the older "Guy" tracks.

BTW, isn't the title "Kelly Watch the Stars"? Well, whatever it's called, they *are* using a vocoder.

I know he's rocker, but did'nt Peter Frampton use something that was a sort tube thing that he sung into? It was used with a wah-wah thing and his guitar, sounded a bit like a vocoder. Sly Stone used a similar thing too, or maybye I'm talking complete bollocks.

I think you're talking about the talkbox. It's a guitar-effect. The way it works is that you take the signal from the guitar amplify it and send it through a plastic tube, which you have in your mouth. When you speak the sound changes as you move your mouth. Plus there is a mic to pick things up. It produces a vocode effect, but it's entirely acousticly created.

i believe cyclonix vocoder (a software emulation of a vocoder for win95) has a free demo, so get hold of that, and check out what it sounds like. Anyway.. that talkboxthing.. i heard it made people drool quite a lot... = not that fancy if your live performing
