I want to get the Roland JV1080 so I can use them excellent drum'n'bass and orchestral expansion boards. However, it costs too much (even 2nd hand) so is there a cheaper alternative that can take these boards? Heard of the D110 (or something like that?)

well, even an jv 35 can take one of these cards.
priced about $ 250 or £ 150 Aprox.
or a better control unit jv 90, with the same card options.
priced around $ 5-600.
the orchestral card is not that fancy, very "japan".

Instead of buying a 1080, and using the same preset sounds that everyone else is using, why not by a MicrowaveII that makes cooler noises, and gives you a thousand times more flexibility to create your own distinct sounds? Think about it. Check it out.

Prior to the jv-1080 all the Roland keyboards used them little cards instead of hardware boards. You can get the same sounds on the cards but there getting harder to find.
The orchestral pads for the JV expansion really aren't anything to shout about without the Xp series effects processors but the Techno-Hip-hop card is decent (though a mc-303 groove box sounds much better and comes in at about $300 to $400 used). Don't be fooled by what Roland calls the Bass and Drum exp board. It's pretty jazzy and has nothing to do with Drum & Bass.
If it's D&B or Jungle you want go get a Mc-303, there's a whole world of complaints about these things but the old school analog drum and bass hits are great for 'da price if you find one used. Better yet get a sampler and download a 909 kit. Dtum hits take up very little RAM and D&b/Jungle loops were invented on old (read cheap) samplers.
Lotsa luck...

well," japan" means : to digital for it`s own good. So clean that it actually scratch.Try some high pitched
chords with full velocity to hear what I mean.
As Errata states, these cards are not very good alone.
Of course a sampler is not the only alternative, it`s the only choice.

I don't want to nit-pick, but Ziggy's comments about the
JV35 are a little misleading - in that the JV35 cannot
use the same cards as other JV series machines.

== EXTRACTS FROM JV/XP FAQ - Version: 1.26 1997-05-20 ==
== Reproduced without permission ==
== Source URL forgotten - Sorry ==

'Large Family' of synths refers to: JV-80, JV-880, JV-90,
JV-1000, JV-1080, JV-2080, XP-50 and XP-80.

'Small Family' of synths refers to: JV-30, JV-35, JV-50
and XP-10.
...
There are 11 expansion boards in existence, but only 9
commonly available.
...
The JV-2080 can hold from 1 to 8 of these boards.
The XP-80, XP-50, and JV-1080 can hold from 1 to 4 of
these boards. The JV-80, JV-880, JV-90, JV-1000 & JD-990
can hold only one of these boards at one time. None of
the 'small family' synths can take these boards.
...

If you have a JV-35, 50, 90 you can install a VE-GS1 or
VE-JV1. The VE-GS1 adds 226 GS sounds and another 28
voices of polyphony and another 16-parts multitimbrality.
The VE-JV1 adds 512 sounds (from the JV-1000 and JV-80),
another 28 voices and 8 parts multitimbrality.
== END ==

I've got a JV50 (which is a JV35 with midi file player)
with the VE-JV1 board, some of the sounds on this are
quite cool - but generally rather cheesy by modern
(dance) standards. The JV50 (and I assume JV35) is a
bit guttless sounding and is TOTALLY unprogrammable -
that's not to say it's difficult but when you can only
modify about six parameters per patch it's a bit
pointless... Filter has little "Oommph", the controllers
don't transmit and they "zip" like hell when moved.

All JV machines are not the same,

Rich

I can't believe the shit I've heard! Jungle on a Roland! BULLSHIT! Jungle loops are generally made using something like a Akai MPC sampling real drums such as tama or rogers.

The jv880 is going for less than half the price of the 1080 over here. But then, it can only hold one card and I believe it's got only 28 or something polyphony (as opposed to 64 on the 1080).

The 1080 is good asa a general module .
It is good quality and if you are little creative you can get very good sounds from it
