only if it has oscillators, but then...the sample becomes the osc, no?

A phrase sampler isn't, a proper one is.

synthesis is taking a sound source and fucking with it. put simply. Most samplers have the same filters, lfo's, and envelopes that analog (or analog modeling) synths have, so it basically comes down to the oscillator. On traditional analog synths, the oscs produce simple waves: sine, square, saw, etc. waves. Samplers use complex, digitally-stored waves. But you could sample a simple saw wave and use it as an oscillator in a sampler and make many of the sounds that you hear from analog synths.

There are certain things you can do with an analog that you can't do with a sampler simply stemming from the fact that you can dynamically alter how the wave is produced in a modeling/analog synth (because the wave is being generated on the fly), and you really can't do that with a sample (seeing as how it's prerecorded, you can really only "scrub" back and forth or chop it up granular-style)

Anyway, your sampler is a synth, don't let anyone tell you otherwise...
