Subject: need soundcard advice
Original Message 1/17 28-Dec-03 @ 04:46 PM - need soundcard advice
I intend to run, Reason, Cubase, Acid, and a few Soft Synths and all the usual gear, but im not sure which sound card to go with. I have a budget of about £200
and it has to be good with the latency as i want to run a midi keyboard for the soft synths and shit, as well as good audio recording.
PC Specs are 256 mb ram ( to be upgraded to 516), 80 gig HD, and 2.0 ghz processor ( Intell celron )
Can anyone give us advice on what soundcards to go for?
At the moment i am running a Soundblaster live 256 card which has served me for past 4 years.
Cheers Johnny

b)Id go 512mb MINIMUM on the ram, right off the bat.
c)to start out, just get yourself an M-Audio Audiophile or the ST-Audio entry level card. Stereo in and out, and midi IO (on the Audiophile..not sure about the ST Audio)
d)look over to the left there. we've got special rooms;)

'cept the STAudio card is called the DSP24 Value Edition and you need to
get the optional daughterboard for the DIGI I/O AND the midi I/O
(Takes the total price for that to about £130ish mebbe less - but still cheap like the budgie!)
Extremely low latencies are acheived with both cards so runnin' what you outlined above will be a cinch!
Though why you'd wanna run "Reason, Cubase and Acid plus softsynths" when if you're on a limited budget, it'll be worth your while to get ONE of those as your main DAW software... still, I guess that's why you're limited budget on the soundcard hardware coz you'll be spending all yer dosh on the s/ware... right... RIGHT?!??

The card works great btw, i've been running it for a while now and never had a problem.
Oh, staudio was acquired by these guys recently, http://www.esi-pro.com/, but hopefully that doesnt change the availability of these cards.

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
