I know a thread like this comes up every now and then. Every new peice of technology has its pros and cons. But dont you think the PC music thing is just going a little too far.

It seems to have got to the point where you need to be more of an IT specialist than a musician. Not that I'm moaning about it, but if it carries on like this I think things will get out of hand.

I mean for fucks sake, if I want to create a word document or an excel spreadsheet I dont use my synths to do it. I use a PC. So why does everyone feel it nessasry to use bloody PC's to create music. Go out and buy the bloody instruments rather than shagging it badly with a wanky old soundcard.

I'll shut up now.

Signed....an old fashioned keyboard player.

I like good equipment new/old , it doesnt matter for me .
I think the most important thing is you have to find your own work style , and have fun / get good results at the same time .
I am keyboard player too but I try allways to not to keep my mind closed ....hhmm , I mean that I´ve seen many artists/producers/musicians ... that find ONE way of working and stay closed to other ppl opinions and thats the baddest thing ! , its beter to work with ppl ! .
Computer makes easy to work solo ....

My opinion today :-)
(tomorrow maybe its different)

computer=dayjob, personal scheduler, word process, games, educational, entertainment, internet, music making

bloody instruments=music making, ego, prestige, coolness factor, (okay)better sound quality

for a struggling musician this is the scenario...

excitement=entirely up to you

i'm not being glib or sarcastic i just can't post too long i'm in the office at my day job (using a pc)

You can use your bloody instruments for playing altough we are living in the computer age. I consider synthesizers as instruments and I'm having fun playing with them. Do you need computers for just PLAYING synths?

What do the most of us do with computers? Well.. digital multitracking, mixing, effecting, mastering, burning cd:s by yourself. Without computers you couldn't do this stuff unless you're a millionaire. Ten or fifteen years ago you could only play that synth (or sax or guitar or whatever) and maybe record it on some 4 track deck.

In my opinion playing instruments hasn't changed. An yes, studios have existed in the past too. It's the computers that makes it possible to all of us to have an access to an high quality recording and mixing environment.

What do you think?

I have only been doing the electronic music thing for a little while now but I've done both using a Computer as a sequencer and a hardware sequencer. My hardware sequencer experience was more exciting because I felt more connected with the musice procces but I find that using a computer is more powerfull. I find it easier. On the other hand my computer is to much of a distraction for the music making proccess. Internet and games seem to distract me from making music. For this reason alone I'm going to make the leap and try hardware sequencing. I'll probably be more productive without all those games to take my time away.

I know what you're saying, When Quake 2 came out I had a moment of "what the fuck" and spent 180 pounds buying the game and a 3d card to run it. That was in december 97, I did not write any tunes until april 98 when the 3d card blew up. As soon as I got stuck with a tune instead of persevereing I would load up quake and wast about 4 hours playing it. Now the cards dead I'm getting productive again.
I'm thinking of getting a hardware sequencer so I can write my stuff on cakewalk as looped midi patterns, copy them to the hardware sequencer then do live mixes from just that with all the tweaking of synths and effects in realtime. I find my music gets stagnant because I rely on the same methods on the pc to get from A to B.

I have no such problem, really.. I have a computer that's dedicted to my audio/sequencing tasks, and another one that I use for the internet/games.. Needless to say, this one is the bitch, and I do all kinds of crazy things on it and try out unstable software on it first and such.. Hehe, I don't care if this one explodes, the other one's my baby... So even if I do load up a game, I can always pause it and go back to my digital audio computer and fuck around with music.. Often, as well, I'll have my other computer playing some of my music while I'm playing a game or cruising the internet.. And since I'm a bit distracted, and not thinkjing about it too hard, I can sometimes sit back and say "Wait a minute... I have the perfect hook for that bassline!"

I've been a trumpet player since age 9, playing guitar for 7 years, and I just got my first synth with a real keyboard yesterday (I used all modules)... Composing and performing the style of music I write (industrial) is just completely impossible without a PC. I'm not a keyboard player, but the PC and my knowledge of music & theory allowme to be just as productive as someone who has played the keys for years (and the PC doesn't fuck up either!)

I tend to just click loads of notes in randomly, then take out the ones that are'nt in tune :-)
I usually only do this when I'm getting desperate though.

I use the PC because it is sooo much cheaper and flexible than dedicated hardware. At least here in Canada. Like every two weeks there seems to be some "NEW" program for free that pushes the envelope of my PC's capabilities a little farther. Though the other side is I get too caught up in learning these new programs and have no time to tune samples/compose. Really the only thing that bothers me about pc programs is some of them make it too easy to make songs or rip off someone else.
