There is a particular logic behind setting up a studio of ANY size. Some of these articles are rather old, however, read them. Read all of them because as you read them you will begin to see the thinking, the logic, behind setting up a studio. Logic that was applicable ten years ago is still applicable today even if the specific gear choices and techniques may not be.

mtv music generator ->techno ejay-> fruityloops (but mixing the tracks in techno ejay) -> all fruityloops ->logic w/ vsts ->logic with h/w synths.
but as for advice:
1) search this site. there's so much information here its crazy. when i first started, people told me this and i just never did it for some reason until later. then i realised how much of an idiot i was for not following directions, and things went smoothly after that. use forum search, read articles, read reviews etc. just learn how things *work*
2) whatever you decide to buy, read the manual. front to fucking back. then open the prog with the manual tightly lodged on your lap and start to fiddle in the prog. do not remove the manual from your lap for a week, unless you are taking a shit in which it should be elevated.
3) learn your shit. learn whatever program you decide to buy IN AND OUT. if its not enough for you, then move on to something more complicated. i felt that way about fruityloops (also becuase i rushed into a purchase which I didn't have the knowledge to use) but still people produce, sell, and make money with only fruityloops.
4) i reccomend (personally) starting with fruity something. fruity studio looks like something that could last you forever really- its a fully blown sequencer that will deffo keep you busy. fruityloops is still great tho- thats what i used for so long and i loved it (well still do really whenever i get around to using it)
5) i reccomend: change your name. if i wanted to listen to a crackhead, i'd turn on FOX news.

Evaluate them, try to figure out which one works best for you, also, if this "do everything in the computer" approach works for you at all. There are dedicated forums to your software specific questions as well (well, except for traction).
Then, do everything as BS said

What kind of music you want to produce BTW?

my current pick for a beginner (based on limited knowledge) would be "computer music" mag's free v. of muzys.. 16 channels (of vsti or audio afaik) and, well, only 2 fx slots on each channel, but that's not bad for starters. oc you either have to buy an issue of cm or bug someone (like me) to u/l it somewhere for you :p

i don't plan to work strictly from my computer for long, just to get started until i can get the extra cash to start getting hardware and junk.
hopefully i can get something to tinker with.
as far as what type of Music i like, what really got me hooked back into electronic was Sandstorm. i forget who did it but i loved it. thats my main focus on types of music. i really love the club music that makes you want to get out on the floor and dance. got to have a good fast paced beat. i'll get ahold of a program and hopefully get some test songs going soon, lots of time on my hands at the moment.
wish me luck. hehe we'll see if i have what it takes to succeed in this area.

(thats who did sandstorm)
anyway...nuff said already...
you basically need a sequencer, soundsource(s), a mixer and effects
these can be all hardware, all software, or a combination of both.
another "all in one" type prog is ORION. It, FruityLoops and Reason are all fairly solid for starting off, and arent all that expensive considering what you get

Seriously... I think you will grow to like "deeper" forms of electronic music if you stick with it, Creedin... People here are cynical of Darude and other pop trance because we've heard it all and have moved on to something else (well, most of us

that sandstorm track was pretty cool, but...in an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie type way.
hope you find your niche, man! it can be pretty fulfilling to translate your thoughts to beats and music.
and...if you end up doin the melodic stuff, more power to ya! just dont fall for the cheese!
