Hi all.

I've got a trusty old Amiga 500 kicking around that I haven't used for years. I was wondering if its possible to MIDI enable it somehow for use as a sequencer or as a sound source or something...? Any ideas or is it not worth the effort?

Yo !

Welll hmmm... you can of course use the trusty old Amiga for sequencing and such...

I still have my old machine safely tucked away in a closet somewhere...

First of all you need to buy a midi interface that you connect to your serial port
It will sett you back ca. 20 quid...

Then you must get hold of some programs to run on your machine.
There is the obvious Bars and pipes from Blue Ribbon Software. Which you can get for free on.
Just search the web. The user interface is a bit strange though.
The KCS sequencer is much better to my opinion. I used to use it when i still sequenced with
the Amiga.

On the other hand you could get an equaly old Atari (W 1 meg) for 50 pounds.
It has built in midi interface. And software is much easier to obtain.

A few years ago the piracy market for both these machines were well developed.
Nowadays I do not know....
Check your neighbourhood for old Amiga/Atari users, they can prob supply you with the
programmes you need to get started...---

Thomas

yeah.... i thought there were plenty of hard disk proggies too..... for mutitracking ... it's as good as an atari, but without the popularity/ease of obtaining programmes...... arent there supposed to be some great trackers for it.... i thought that was what the dutch junglists used.... amaiga mod files and all that... go to the dutch jungalists hq and have a look.....

Well, it's got 8bit audio as standard, and although there are a whole bunch of different tracker programs around (noisetracker, protracker, octamed,...), I don't think they are a match to any of the newer tracker programs on pc. Except that an amiga is a lot more stable than win95.
I *think¨* I read something about a 303 clone on it though, not sure about it.

I've still got an amiga2000 hidden away somewhere, unfortunately the harddisk has crashed.

Thanks fella's. Scanning the net for interesting software as we speak... looks like there's some decent sequencers available. That would free up my PC so I can run some soft synths 'n stuff :-)

Just remembered... samplitude started life as an Amiga program and some Belgian guy (aren't those Belgian people just great, making all those tasty nice beers and stuff) made a sequencer modelled after cubase (don't know if this is good, but at least I'm pretty sure the timing is much better than on pc).
Search that net... and if you would fetch some nice programs let me know, while standing in that closet my amiga isn't doing shit so...

Ahhh AMOS... thats a blast from the past. Don't think it would be around on the PC though... I think it was fairly hardware specific... dunno. Geez I wrote some crap games with that....

I used to mess about with octamed when I had an amiga.. The last version had a pretty good midi output for a tracker based prog. What was that sampler cartridge you could get? You could have polyphony of 4 notes at 16bits for around 100ukp (new) probably hell of a lot cheaper if you could find one now.

Hey Phallus... and also the best 'french fries' eyh ?
No, Amos doesn't exist on PC, and I'm pretty sure it never will.

Galleyslave: I did some commercial games on that machine, not Amos but assembler. Never were a success or big hit (though one of them got re-released for the gameboy last year).

Like what games PH? Anything I might know?

I used to use protracker & octamed... that was my first exposure to electronic/computer music. I dunno about getting 16-bit sound out of octamed even with some hardware thing... I think the somehow you can get 12-bit or something but dunno about 16.

At least though I think that using it as a sampler is possible.. octamed can midi sync... thing is most of the things you would you an Amiga/Atari for you can do on a PC anyway... so if you've got a decent PC the 'ol beast is destined to stay in the cupboard. I don't yet see a use that justifies buying a midi interface for it.... being poor 'n all.. ;-)

Still trying to find that 303 emulator thing though... could be fun..

Amazing how that Amiga speech thing appears in so many songs... I heard some crap thing the other day that goes like "i'm a disco dancer" - "fantasy romancer"... that has gotta be an Amiga. Shite song though.

Well ... could be the A...
I think it has been done using the speech synth
on the Amiga... but it could easely been done with
the Atari or even the C64 (Say it Sam)....
And yes, that tune realy stinks !
Fuck, they'll release anything wont they ?

The PC will never be able to simulate the Amiga !

Coz the whole architechture on the PC sux compared to the
Amiga !!!

To compare AMOS with Windows 98, makes me laugh...
The AMOS fits on 2 880 kb disks and Windows ????

AMOS never (almost) crash ... Windows ? Welll.... Hmmm...

(I might add that nowadays I only use PC)
