Can the filters on the Akai S-series samplers be controlled via Midi? Ya know, for
cool techno effects? What about Emu's? I'm about to purchase my first Sampler,
which I plan to use mostly for drums, but I also want to be able to filter stuff to death.
That damn A3000 probly does it all but its so expensive; maybe I would be better off
purchasing an S2000 and loading it W/options. I also wish to be able to utilize
SoundForge to edit with. tally hoe, thanks, Jim

ESI 32 is WAY better, check the new OS at E-Mu´s site, it provides the 32 with the Orbit awesome filters (16 types)

Yeah, the ESI32 has got more filters, but you can get an add on for the akai which gives you extra bandpass highpass etc- and the price is now sooo low. I've seen them for £599 new and loaded with the full 32 megabytes RAM. Oh but a shit display.

How much would an ESI 4000 cost with the Turbo board?
I REALLY want to be able to sample digitally, cause my
CD player has a Digital output. Am I crazy, or does
sampling digitally blow away analog sampling, really?
I'm quite afraid that some of the drum sounds that I Sample will be less than Superb.

Yeah, but you can get the same turbo board for the 32 and they are still some 32s with the previous S/PDIF board installed for very little money

Turnkey are selling ESI-4000's with the turbo board for £1299 quid reduced from £1500. But whoa... you could buy a small island in the sun for that! I'd definately buy second hand whatever you decide to go for...and Jawa's quite right, the ESI-32 has got I think 18 filters standard but the akai has only got one (most useful lowpass for all jungle drum sweeps and things like that) To be honest I dont know too much about the ESI range so I dont know about onboard effects and the like. Actually my advice is if you're thinking about the esi-4000, then you mightas well get a Yamaha A3000 with the digital option. I know someone with one of these and they really are the dogz. They read .wav files, can be expanded to 128 meg have 64 note poly as standard, cool filters, onboard FX as standard, they have assignable controller knobs on the front..and ...errr...rule.
At the moment Turnkeys got em for £950 down from £1299.

Turnkey is mail order in the uk. You can check out their website at http://www.turnkey.uk.com/ It might be worth putting wanted ads in classified columns. Ring up shops and ask for what they got secondhand. In shops especially try to haggle the price down and you will probably get a nice discount. Even if you really want what the got pretend its not quite what youre lokking for and that your not sure. And try to pay cash!!

Got myself an esi-4000 (without the turbo option... for now).
I love it so far. There is 20 filters which are pretty damn cool. They added some new ones I think, like the bat-phaser, which can produce some really weird sounds.
But I was so glad when I started assigning controlers curves in cakewalk to mofify the filters.... it's so neat and easy.
Anyway, if you got the money I think the e-4000 is the a good buy. The interface is very easy, and all the functions are 2 buttons away. The sounds is very good. You can scrub trhough the samples with the wheel of your keyboard. The CDrom that comes with it has a quite good selection of excellent sounds (if you have a SCSI CD reader... cause if you don't you won't be able to read the CD...). And I love the LFOs, VCAs, VCFs, and other generators. I could go on and on...
I'll just say that the thing is amazing me with the sounds (techno sounds) that comes out of it. It does all I need and more.
