The Edirol line of midi controllers seems to win in most reviews I have read. What do you guys think? Ive saved up enough for a new one and Im gonna buy one but id like some feedback. Are there any with 5-/+ octaves? What do you guys think is the best midi controller?

edirol is a good bet in this category. there's the obvious options> m-audio---evolution...> now combined...kenton etc. but...seriously....it ain't gonna make a world of difference.
just get the thing and GO TO IT my man~

and i'll get one too ONE day!

Think about a used synth for a controller. Alesis QS-7 for example? CS1X/CS2X?

I love my radium 61. It's really nice, haven't had any problems yet. The only thing I could complain about is that it's touch sensitive and has weighted keys, but most people like that

edirol PCR series installs 2 virtual midi ports with the driver, so that you can easily route different controlers to different apps. I'm very happy with my PCR-30.

Greetings: Lots of options. The Evolution line is good and affordable. You can get a 5 octave controller for about $220.00 u.s. dollars.

I use the yamaha cs1x s my main keyboard. It has a few rotary knobs for actual control but i'm prolly gonna get an actual midi controller mixer as an interface for changing more. I just prefer the feel and look of an actual synth rather than a controller. Plus it's got some great sounds in being the cs1x n all (even though i still aint used em yet hehe).

The Oxygen 8 has 7 octaves, I think. Center, +3, and -3. That adds up to 7, I think. I remember looking around for info when I was buying a controller, and at the time, they didn't list octave range in the specs. The oxygen 8 is a 2.5 octave keybaord, though - small. But good for dance type stuff where you rarely play a full 5 octave range at one time.

I can't remember ever needing to go beyond -4, but the PCR-30 goes at least that far. it feels more durable than the oxygen IMHO. doesn't fit in a backpack though. springloaded integrated pitch/mod wheel is annoying to me too, but you can always assign those functions to another slider/knob.
