(1) Need a pc 4 uni.

(2) Needs 2 be small 4 my shoebox room at uni.

(3) Toying with idea for gigging.

(4) Oh yeah it would have to be a 486 and running 3.11.... and my trusty cakewalk 5..... does Soundforge run on 3.11?

(5) I saw a couple in Loot 4 about £450 so i'm gonna keep looking around. BTW they were pentiums....

I was considering this myself (sorry to butt in) but do these laptops come with MIDI interfaces? If not, I reckon they cost a bomb to fit! Everything else in Laptop format is a killer (in price)../.hgkn,vm vm nmbvnm z we\i (dribbling)

True, but you can get midi interfaces that go from the printer port bit.

A parallel MIDI interface! How bizarre! Do laptops have a serious crashing problem?

Can you use them with wav files and use it as a sampler (1100DX)?

What about SCSI?

They are going filthy cheap in the Loot at the moment!

The Midilink from Musicworks hooks up to the printer port so you could stick it in a laptop no problem- but it is about 3 times expensive as a regular 15 pin adaptor for a PC. Suppose you only gotta get 1 tho so what the hell.

yes they are crap... well, like a standard built in audio out on mini-jacks...... you can get older soundforge V3.... it is ok actually.....those IBM thinkpads are quite nifty... the keyboard opens out as you lift the lid.... so you get a big keyboard, and a small laptop..... er..... dunno if they are reliable tho, or have audio outs.... but there ya go... lappy's are a grey area to me....all i know, is the new ones break down alot...

I'd stay away if I were you. You're going to pay 1.5 to 2 times more for a laptop with comparable specs to a given desktop. And they're more or less non-expandable. And if you gig with it, it's really easy for someone to rip it off.

Here's my two cents worth. As a live gig sequencer a laptop is great, although my mates have had problems with the reliability of some brands. I play in a covers band in australia which is actually lucrative in this part of the world, although not so creative. I would recommend Compaq as I have had no problems. If you want to do the big Audio thing then you'd be wasting you're time as a desktop will always be much better. Anything laptop is always 3 times more expensive and not upgradable.
I always use a power protect board and I use a souncanvas mk2, cause it has a midi interface built in which connects to the serial port (SC-88 would even be better as the old canvas's sound has shit dynamic range due to fucked A/D} , then I turn off the midi channels I want to use for other sound modules on the sound canvas using sysex. Always turn the sysex recieve on the other modules to off otherwise the sysex for the canvas may fuck with it. I just use the media player as this gives flexability and midi files don't take that long to load off the hard drive. Also if it's just midi then a 486 with 3.1 is enough and they're not very expensive. dale

Laptops are the future...when I got my mac I was appalled at the noise. My cousin has a G3, runs cubase better than
my 8600/604e, makes no noise, screen plenty big, you can
get an external chassis for an admittedly thousand bucks and have PCI slots and there's talk of sound cards going into the scuzzy port (i think) -- guy at sam ash NY says
he knows a guy running pro tools off a laptop...who needs
a monster computer? All you need is five grand, shit, I've
got that on me...but you guys are all PC freaks anyway I'm
obviously at work...
