I think only like 5 or six, and yes, a thru box will prevent midi delays

I've got a JX3P old synth with no MIDI thru and no way of selecting incoming channel - so what do ya reccomend?

hmm.. just started setting up my pc for sequing. i'm still waiting for the software (micrologic.. impatience..) but some of the crap sequencers i've found on the web offer the option of specifying which one of the two midi outs on my opcode 2in/2out to send through.

midi delay is a myth..... what you do get is signal degradation due to bandwidth sqeezing at the thru box... but delay... nope... apparently

on the subject of sequencers.... apparently Emagic are coding a pc ground-up version of L-Audio.... so i guess in light of all the cubase problems, it's worth a wait...

So, wait...a thrubox might create problems instead of eliminate them? I thought linking more than say 5 boxes together was asking for it, so the thrubox killed that...

there is a delay, but it's very small....
midi transmits at 30Khz. that's 1/30Khz seconds/bit.
breaking out my calculator...that's 3.2ns (nanoseconds!)
there's 10 bits/digit (8 bits + start/stop) so 25.6
nanoseconds (that's .256ms!) Now, there are 3 bytes
in a typical midi message, so multiply by 3 = 76.8ns
(that's .768ms...i may have the 'n' wrong though).
That's how long it takes a midi message to be transmitted.

OTOH, the speed of light is 186,000 miles/second.
A mile is 5280 feet (US). So, the electrical signal
will travel the 6 feet from your computer to the
end of the chain in approximately 6.109x10-9 s

for comparison, the time above is 7.68x10-5....
this isn't exactly right, but it's close enough...

most midi thrus are hardware i.e. the midi in is
connected directly to the midi out with wire, nothing
in between. then you are just putting a lot of load
on that wire which degrades signals. this isn't so
bad.

however, some synths (like the tx81z is one I know of)
have "soft" thrus, meaning that the synth reads the
byte off the port, and then spits it back out the thru.
these suck. there's no telling how long it will take
to spit out the message, and most don't pass sysex.
it can be up to 30ms, which is in Dolby surround
territory......

another advantage to midi thrus is if you have a pc
or mac midi editor for more than one of your synths,
but only one midi input...you can use the patchbay
to determine which one is talking back to the computer
during programming, then switch easily back to the
controller.....
