My friend gave me his old laptop and I have a desktop(devoted to just digital audio). My question is this. I would like to use my new laptop as a standalone synth(Absynth2)and for sampling(kontakt). This would greatly reduce the load on the cpu. Have any of you guys done this or know anyone who has? How would I get the audio into the desktop. I am currently using a digi 001. Thanks for any help.

I was thinking of using an m-audio audiophile usb. It has midi in/out and of course outs for audio. What do you guys think? Would firewire be better?

well how many tracks to you forsee needing to be transferred between the laptop and desktop simultaneously? I believe USB 1.0 craps out after 6 tracks of audio.

Use MLan. I bet with just a pair of Firewire ports you could get audio back and forth without problems. You'd have to verify this with Yamaha, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work.
