Ok...Hey all.....This might be the completly wrong place to ask this but I stubbled on this website whilst searching. I dont know whether any of you have heard of the band STATIC-X , but if you havent then I'll try to explain there music style.. It is coined as EVIL DISCO because its like.....hmmmm.... I guess like fast paced metal music but WAYNE(the singer)adds like.....programming? dancey sounding? bits into it like you know them sounds you get in dance music...the beeps and boops and the strange alien like sounds that loop and stuff. yeah well I might not be very good at explaining this BUT...... I wanna make that kinda music.... I play guitar in a band and thats my intrument of chocie...actually...my life , lol , but I want to dabble in this kind of music.....putting heavy guitars over dance techno patterns. if anybody wants to listen to any static-x with that kind of thing to know what Im talking about , download SHADOWZONE , or COLD.... this has the kind of thing in it that I want to do. The stuff at the start of shadow zone and basically all the way through COLD....... well finally the question is , are there any computer programs you can buy or download that let you do this kind of thing ? like I know theres dance ejay which Ill probably check out but you cant actually create your own bits you just use there samples. I already know how to record my guitar onto the computer so yeah its just a case of getting some program or something to make this happen. Alright sorry this was a bit long winded I hopie somebody can help. Thanx....

Heh. I can help... You need to learn a bit about synth and sampler programming, and how to program beats. Start off with some software synthesizers. Read everything you can find on sequencing, analog synth programming, and especially sampling. There's lots of good info here.

And for God's sake... Get some KMFDM   You'll do yourself a great service if you take Influx's sarcastic suggestion and check out the stuff people were doing 10 years ago in this style. Static-X is really watered down comparatively.

PS - If my last group had stuck around I probably would've opened their recent show in Rochester..

Static-X tryin to cop some new "name" for a "new genre" is fcking stupid as it gets.

as for makin the tunes...hell...a sampler and some synths and a sequencer.

software or hard, take your pick!

oh, and....it aint quite the same, but...go check out Fear Factory "ReManufactured"

more metal/hardcore but fcking sick nonetheless

Remanufacture is a sick record. Thanks to Rhys Fulber from Front Line Assembly

Anyways, I'd look into Orion definately. It comes with all the tools you need to get started. As step up from there I'd say Project5 from Cakewalk would work well, Sonar would probably be better - then you'd be able to record and mix your band as well as lay out your electronic (the song you listened to was done with Sonar, although the synths were hardware).

If you want to perform live, I would definately recommend that you look into hardware rather than software. Software's great for the studio rats, but I've got a computer sceince degree and I don't trust my live show to a PC. If you're cool with running DAT or backing Cd at a show, then I guess go ahead - I think that's kind of cheating though As a starting point I'd look at getting maybe a secondhand Akai MPC-2000 or Yamaha RS-7000... If that's too much bread then maybe a Yamaha SU-700 or even an older Akai or Emu sampler plus a sequencer.. That way you can sample what you make in software and sequence it live, or even use those boxes directly for making beats. Personally I prefer to make beats on hardware sequencers than in software but that's just me.

Read all the stuff in the Articles section here at Dancetech, and hang around listening to what people say about the gear they use, until you start to know what it's for and what the subjective general opinions are. It'll save you a lot of cash.
Good luck!

-Craig

go to kvr-vst.com and search for free hosts..

vst is the predominant plug-in format for effects, synths, samplers et c. and there are thousands of vst freebies that often are as good or better than crap you buy. you can totally sound 'pro' using just freeware.

can't really recommend a free host (vst host/sequencer) because they tend to suit different styles.. some do a lot but have a steep learning curve, others vice-versa.

industrial music? give me a break

'industrial' music was about industrialism - pop (regardless of how much distortion/drum mahcines it has) will always be about emotions.

Actually, most industrial was about politics.

And to make a point, I don't mean to imply that you can't get a pro sound with software, only that hardware is more stable for live performance. That's a claim almost everyone here who has actually performed live will probably back up.

cubasis 'inwire' is very conventional (if you can find it.. it used to only be on steinberg's german language site) - it's exactly like the commercial cubasis except you can't save songs, so all-in-one-session.. i can u/l that for you if you like.

massiva is very elementary and easy to understand.. maybe a bit too elementary. it also crashed my 299 when i tried to close it..

if i were starting now, i'd use bidule.. maybe buzz.. does the pro-tools lite (only 8 tracks afaik) use vsti?? :p

loadsa people get a start on fruity (same limitation as inwire afaik)

ssh - i can also hook you up with cm muzys (free 16 track v. of muzys that comes with computer music magazine) - somebody ought to get some use out of the money i spent on that issue.. haven't used it, but again, a lot of people do..

or tracktion.. think that has a 30 day freebie :p

'industrialism' - read 'methodologism'
