try multiquence at http://www.goldwave.com/. This lets you import or record audio and then record a new track while listening to the other (or others). You can then mix, put fx on etc. It is quite intuitive. You can loop audio tracks too (drum loops etc). If you can use a 4-track you can probably use this. Also cakewalk etc does this stuff but costs more. Multiquence is shareware but is fully functional.

There are other multitrack software packs but these are the two I know.

ps. if you use too many tracks and/or fx with multiquence it will jump and jitter but will render the mix to a wav file as smooth as a babies behind.

Exactly. You need a full duplex soundcard. You don't mention software or hardware.

But get a Roland VS. Don't go the PC way.

whats wrong with the pc? it's cheaper, easier to upgrade and editing is much easier.

I'm with shadow - PC's waste time twiddling with virtual faders and knobs. I've tried it and I don't like it. The Roland VS is so much more straight forward.

There are plenty of alternatives to the VS systems, all substantially cheaper, e.g. Fostex DMT8 (?), Korg D8, Akai's 12 track thing, Sony has an 8 track as well, and, as mentioned, the cheaper MD format. Some of them are just like 4 track recorders.

I am just about to purchase a KORG D8 [[ for 600 UK pounds pretty damn cheap methinks ]] -- it suits my needs fine. The drawback of only two tracks being recordable at any one time is not a problem for me and suits my recording style; non-live house stuff -- I already own a Syquest EZflyer drive for backups, but obviously with the D8 packing 1.4G in its hard drive I am occasionally going to want to do transfer my EZflyer carts onto a major backup .... something like DAT or burn a few CDs --- does anyone know if this is possible. I don't own a PC - so investing in one purely for HD recording (and maybe CD burning) is not really practical.

I was looking at DMT8, VS and D8. Can any of them transfer between PC digitally? Like parallel, serial or scsi? Can any of them sync up to midi on PC? Are the scsi drives compatible with pc? ie do the scsi drives get formatted as pc disks so you could swap onto pc?

The prices make 4-tracks/minidisk multitracks look well over priced.

Yep. You can send an audio file from the Roland VS-series over to the PC - put it through a software converter and transfer it into wav files.

Has anyone used pc hd recording with no problems?
I like the idea of editing on the pc, you can't beat using a mouse and keyboard on a 17" monitor to edit over a 1 inch display on a standalone unit.

The Paris system from ensoniq is wonderfull if you dont need portability . There is a new cheaper Paris called concept . It may be good for you except if you use it as a main mixer cause it only have 2 ins and 2 outs . But it can handle 16 tracks and 128 tracks with submixing .
New version 1.81 seems to handle midi sync much better than older ones . The concept/fx haves reltime dsp too .
My computer just broke today sigh . I´m waiting to next week to repair it I hope the hd´s are fine
