Check out an old Amiga 500 since they have a small program called "say" which sounds ...interesting. You can make really strange sounds by making sentences like "lllllllmmmmmppmmoppmmmllmpp" and have it say it really fast.

If you have access to an UNIX computer you could get some old speech stuff running..

You mean those little green thingies aren't soapbars?
Come to think about it, I've always thought they did smell a little funky &-^)

if anyone else is interested, the willowtalk link from buggo has a free, easy to use program that uses eight voice models; gender, age, and 'quality' specific.

neat proggie, think kraftwerk's 'musique nonstop' female voice. however, none of the voices are the type i'm looking for ie. early speech synth roboto voices.

so i'm still looking, if anyone knows of some freeware (i have a line on hardware, but free is better!) but there's a nice utility. thanks again to buggo.

xoxos to all (as long as they use real soap)

hey noteven...I see you're making friends again...

You really should keep your smartass posts to yourself... I think you're the only one left here, that really LOVES drawing negative attention to themselves...knock it off... and stop being so personal...

Slagging is one thing...

So, come play in the Slag arena...I'll chew your little ass up!

Bug, thanks for the link... very cool shit, indeed...

Yeah, I had some fun with that proggie. And I got FUCKIN AWESOME robot-sounds by using Harry's voice, I think, and fucking with it in cool edit...I think under the "flange" settings there is a "martian" preset, and under reverb (i think) there is a "robot" preset...It sounds most excellent, with some timestretching and FX...I've already started to come up with some track ideas!!

hmm...speech synths are great in theory but finding a good one is tough...i'd suggest just using Cool edit or a comparable proggie to fuck with a REAL voice (yours) to the extent that it sounds robotic...interesting anecdote here:

during finals week last year at school, we all crammed into the gym to take our tests. outside the gym is a big bank of lockers, some of which are used, some of which are not....so we (myself and a few friends) got an old shite boombox with a tape deck...made a big soundtrack on my computer with clips from some stupid ass low budget porn movie, with bits from martians (me) with lots of FX etc on the voice...and lots of shooting with lasers, girls screaming in ecstasy/pain, strange zardox-the-alien voices plus a lot of derogatory refererences to some of the less desirable staff at our school...he he...recorded it onto tape with a 20 minute lag in the beginning, put it in a vacant locker, locked it, and took the test....all was TOTALLY silent as people fretted about the tests, suddenly orgasmic screams and sounds of alien invasions screamed through the room...it played all the way through too! (about 15 minutes!!) they didn't have any bolt cutters for the lock...he he....

'twas probably the second best prank i have ever pulled in my long arduous painful high school career. only 2 more years to go to top that one...he he...

oh, right, about speech synths: eeh, i'm sure they're out there!! (helpful bastard that i am)

well, yes. lots of cool things can be done re. voices. in 94 i was fucking around with writing programs to write lil' pop songs... only a mother could love. sampled phonetics onto the mirage and pitch shifted the vowels. took forever to multitrack it onto my 424 cassette multi (only 16 wavesamples at a time on the mirage.) found i could stretch credibility 1/2 octave up/down. i needed more nouns and all the songs ended up being about towels. yes, i am a fanatic. or too much free time.

anyway i found out that the kraftwerk computer world stuff was all done on a speak and spell, so now all i gotta do is track one down. BTW anyone got one of those fisher price cassette video cameras? fat chance, right. well, still love to hear about freeware before i shell for the english/spanish translator w/ built in speech. it is not to question that which is placed before us.

high school.. no, not a thing.

I was looking for the same thing a while back. The one I used (thanx to someone on this site....sorry, can't remember who right now) is at:

http://www.bell-labs.com/project/tts/voices.html

Now this one is pretty "intelligible" so it may not be what you want. I really wanted something more "Speak&Spell"-ish, too, but for the moment I used the Bell Labs one.....not too bad.

Also, (even though I know you want free-ware) I think the old Texas Instruments TI-99 had some speech-synthesis available on it.....dunno for sure, but when these things are for sale they usually are around $100 or so with a bunch of programs and extras, too......just a thought.
